Is changing a dirty nappy in a café still considered unacceptable?

I was having lunch killing time in an M&S cafe when a new mum with a 6mth old (baby was weaning on a fruit pouch) went to change her baby’s dirty nappy in the pram. I’m not blaming the baby for one minute as babies poo at the most inconvenient times! I understand that she was baffled on her own, messy baby nneeded outfit changing and had to redress the baby and then pack all her stuff away. The poor woman most likely sleep deprived and could have had PND so lots of reasons why she was stressed out as being out with a baby is stressful enough.

Is it the norm to change dirty nappies in front of others these days ? Or is this still lack of etiquette ? Personally I think it was unacceptable especially as the toilets are pretty much attached to this M&S cafe abd saw it was rather inconsiderate.

No. Of course it isn't. Staff should have interacted and shown the restroom to mum.

Notbuiltforheat · 24/09/2026 18:42

Yuck no.

Overthebow · 24/09/2026 18:42

No absolutely not. No excuse for her changing baby in the middle of the cafe.

No, this is only acceptable with no other options and not in a cafe, absolutely disgusting. And yes I have 3 children and I have had to pack up multiple things and taken everyone into a crowded baby change or toilet in the middle of eating but that’s what you have to do.

Mandarinaduck · 24/09/2026 18:43

That is gross. Totally unacceptable.

Bluehouse14 · 24/09/2026 18:43

Wet nappies wouldn't bother me but dirty nappies would.

Newsenmum · 24/09/2026 18:46

I wouldn’t mind her quickly changing a wet nappy over a sleeping newborn lying in a pram if there was no toilet nearby or even in general, as you can’t really see. But poo? In full view? No.

Anon4688554 · 24/09/2026 18:49

It was definitely poo and didn’t wash her hands so touched the table and her seat with dirty hands!!!

I was sitting behind but an old couple were directly opposite, I felt for them!!

And she couldn't wash her hands either.

Orangelover · 24/09/2026 18:50

Yeah bit gross. However as a new mum can see how this happens. I’ve been shocked how many places
dont have baby changing facilities or if they do they’re absolutely gross. I’ve changed baby in the boot of the car or the backseat if more privacy needed because I’d rather do that than out and about. A messy pooey nappy and a full outfit change is a nightmare whilst out. Especially my robust 7 month old who still has wild bowels and has become mobile 🥴

tiredtiredd · 24/09/2026 18:51

Dirty entitled woman. Couldn’t be bothered to walk to the toilets.

Lovelynames123 · 24/09/2026 18:54

Nope it's not acceptable, but when I said this to a woman changing a dirty nappy on my cafe table, and directed her to the baby change, I received a phone call from her mother berating me for telling her daughter off!

Sirzy · 24/09/2026 18:54

Even if somewhere has no baby change facilities you find somewhere out of the way and out of peoples line of sight.

Topseyt123 · 24/09/2026 18:54

Not acceptable at all, new mum or not.

I had three children and managed never to do this when any of them were babies.

Nobody wants to view and smell a child's shit in a café or restaurant.😠

She could've done it in the pram anywhere outside of the area that people are eating though, I had 2 babies and never changed their nappy in a cafe/restaurant, even at soft play where it might be considered ok

WhatNoRaisins · 24/09/2026 18:56

It's still unacceptable. I was sleep deprived but I could remember not to do that one.

RaininSummer · 24/09/2026 18:58

No that is revolting and very thoughtless of other customers.

smallchange · 24/09/2026 19:00

No. It's staggeringly unhygienic and inconsiderate.
It was M&S so there will have been baby changing facilities and cafe staff who would have taken her tray behind the counter if there was no one ahe could ask to watch it.

InfoSecInTheCity · 24/09/2026 19:01

Definitely not acceptable, we’ve all been caught short with a nappy change at some point but I did things like use the car boot or put the travel baby mat down on the floor in the toilet, would never have changed a nappy near people eating.

oldFoolMe · 24/09/2026 19:03

i don’t see it as an issue if no other choice. Life happens. If it’s okay to take for a dog i the cafe which is far more unhygienic imho why not change a baby.

There is always another choice rather than doing it in the middle of a cafe!

Why would there be no other choice. But I do agree with you about dogs

NovemberMorn · 24/09/2026 19:07

Babies are lovely, their pooey nappies are not.
Get away from people who are eating and drinking and don't be so bloody entitled.🙄

M&S cafes have toilets, and staff....who should have intervened.

But you wouldn’t expect the dog to poo next to people eating and for someone to clear it up without washing their hands, so no comparison.
New mother or not you’d wheel baby in the pram either to the loos or outside. No excuses at all.

Anon4688554 · 24/09/2026 19:10

@NovemberMorn i bit my lip but didn’t want to saying anything , hoping the staff would but no!
