It was more the way he asked who was there, amd I said just me and dd, then he replied ohh I just heard a man's voice
So like he didn't accept my first answer

You answered, he responded.
Mountains, molehills.

I think it's reasonable to ask who is there if you hear someone else talking while on the phone.

It's not reasonable to question your answer or to then tell your husband (although I'm still not clear whether they did or not. It seems a bit vague).

Anyway, why are your in-laws calling you? Surely they should be phoning their son rather than you. Just stop with the phone calls.

What I can't really get my head round though, is dh says he wants as little do with them as possible, yet he's doesn't want to fully remove the, somi suppose it makes me wonder does he like them more than he says.
He's also an only child so he hardly has any family

As a previous poster said, this may be his version of normal. It’s likely that he will always yearn for his mum to be the mum he yearns for, for things to improve. Many people from dysfunctional families model what normal is while their batshit relatives carry on dishing out hurt. It’s a really big thing to disown a parent and many don’t do it.

Crazy thing is I’m the least likely person to cheat in the world and I’m at home with toddler

I’ve said she mil
can only come round when dh is there as why should I entertain her
and I’m not picking up the phone to them anymore

Exactly this - I started to laugh a bit because AS IF you would just casually be having random men over when you have a toddler tornado running around 😄

The amount of people who either have no clue, have forgotten or just underestimate how busy a toddler keep you always surprises me. My husband and I are always joke that we are amazed when we hear that anyone else has had an affair because who has the time and energy quite frankly lol

Jesus, what a load of incomprehensible old tripe.

Is this clearer for you?

Then he asks me again.
Again, I reply, "Just us two."

Fil replies, "I can hear a man’s voice ….."

what would you make of that?

LaurieFairyCake · 24/09/2026 16:52

Well I’m going to guess that they’re my age or older so I’d probably be having fun with it (at their expense)

”oh it’s the window cleaner, you’ve seen ‘confessions of a window cleaner’ ?” 😂

Because making yourself effectively an orphan is a huge and painful thing to do, and has to be when he is ready.

Yes guess your right.
Just a bit weird when he says how much he can't stand them, that they are like strangers, yet he still sees them, so you must be right, guess he will take that step if he's ever ready. Guess in the mean time next time he's moaning about them, I just got to listen really.

Also, aren't you allowed male friends anyway? I have a few and they often visit. Hardly a crime.

Exactly this. If I were at home with a toddler, and there were times of day when it was awkward to go out because of naps or whatever, I’d have every available friend I had around for coffee. I mean, do they think you need a chaperone?

Maybe channel the energy of a less agreeable person. Some people would say they’ve never been so insulted and refuse to have anything to do with PIL again giving zero fucks about how that was perceived by others. It’s an option. They don’t sound great and your DH keeps them at arms length by the sound of it so little to worry about if you freeze them out.

This approach definitely has merit. My sister has bullied me her whole life but our last interaction I got angry instead of timid and flared up at her. It actually fucking worked! She backed right off and I wish I had done it years ago!

She leaves me alone now.

OP. Maybe you should have said, "You fucking what? Come round here, check the place over for male DNA and then say it to my face, you twisted cunt!"..

Maybe one big pop like that would get the nasty minded turd to have a word with himself but I'm post menopause and have run out of fucks a good while since. 😶

wishfulthinking25 · 24/09/2026 20:11

I would never speak to them again. Looking for trouble. Block & delete, let them be your DHs problem if he wants a relationship.
