What obvious adult discoveries made you feel a bit of a plonker?

What’s something you learnt as an adult that made you think that’s completely obvious and yet I have never considered that….i feel like a bit of a plonker?

Mine was when taking tablets, the more you drink with it the better it will dissolve. I think alot of tablets are testing with the assumption people will drink 250ml alongside it.

Didn’t they ever blow up, when the contents/steam expanded past the capacity of the tin’s seal? 😃 The only person I know in RL who did this (other than tragic or awful longtime bachelor characters in novels) was a friend of my father’s, now in his 80s, who prided himself on ‘not knowing anything about cooking’ and did it when his wife was in hospital.

The reason I remember it is ( it’s probably 30 years ago) that not only did he blow up a can of soup once, he also once, on another occasion when his wife was visiting her sister, put an unopened tinned steak and kidney pie in the oven, and blew the door off the oven.

I think this topic needs to be clarified:
You can warm up unopened tins as long as you put them in the water. Water obviously never gets above 100C. That's how you make dulce de leche, boil an unopened tin of condensed milk for a few hours.
But you have to be really careful not to let the water boil off, because then indeed the tins will explode. Same in the oven.

There is a garden centre near me that has an old fashioned sweet shop, you can get parm violets there, licorice sticks, the actual proper stick from the plant.

Toffee in trays that they use a hammer to break.

Sounds like heaven! 😍

My dad, an intelligent and well-read person, somehow got to adulthood thinking that it was 'chimley' not chimney.

And there is no 'p' in hamster.

I was an adult when I found out silicon valley was related to tech, for years I thought it was related to plastic surgery Blush

Me too! Particularly breast enhancement.

Green peppers, red, orange, yellow peppers are the same thing! Just at different stages of ripeness.

I visited Flodden a couple of weeks ago. It is in North Northumberland near Coldstream.

Coldstream is a place? Is that where the Coldstream Guards come from?

They stay there, guarding it.

I'm not gonna trust any company that can't spell refrigerate or allergens

Allergin is gin that has an adverse effect on some of us.

Yes it is, and it is the most underwhelming town I have ever visited. The "high street" has two or three shops, we only saw one open cafe and the place had no atmosphere at all. There is a lovely viewpoint in a park where you can overlook the river Tweed, and an interesting museum which covers the history of the town and the Coldstream guards.

I will never get those few hours back though.

Yes you used a tin opener (remember these?) to make a couple of holes in the lid before boiling it

How could I forget a tin opener? I use mine at least once a week, how are you opening tins without ring pulls?

I'm pretty sure that's not true, it's always comes up on threads like this and it's not the case for all of the colours

Ah OK, I don't open many tins but I thought they all had ring pulls these days

Yes Indeedy! Pacers - stripes! As the advert used to go.

Also did you like Spangles? Also , Parma violets?..Also you could get this flat piece of bubble gum with a " tattoo ' kind of piece of paper that you lay on your skin, you lick the back of it and wait and then peel it off gently. Et voilà! A murky, blotchy tattoo that lasted until you next had to wash your hands. Happy days ☺️

Don't like spangles or Parma violets but I'd eat anything offered as wasn't fed right or often. You can get something near to Pacers in Poundland so occasionally I get them. I remember the sweet tattoo as well.

I remember steamed puddings in a tin, which my mum cooked by boiling in a pan of water. She always used to make holes in the top of the tin first to let the steam out. She tells me that these were the cooking instructions printed on the tin. Perhaps it was a “thing” back in the day.

Oh God I loved those, the chocolate ones.

Bazooker Joes. The tattoos never worked for me.

Sharpened flint.

Banjas · 28/09/2026 13:46

Green and red peppers are the same but at various stages of ripeness according to Google, however yellow and orange peppers are different to the green/red ones.

Yes, the type that made a little triangular hole. For all tins for pouring from before the ring pull.
Heinz steamed puds! Ginger, syrup, fruit or chocolate!

We must be the same generation.

My mother dug two triangular holes opposite each other in tins of evaporated milk to pour onto steamed puddings. If you didn't dig two, then they didn't pour properly. I don't think I ever tasted 'fresh' cream til I left home.
