What obvious adult discoveries made you feel a bit of a plonker?

What’s something you learnt as an adult that made you think that’s completely obvious and yet I have never considered that….i feel like a bit of a plonker?

Mine was when taking tablets, the more you drink with it the better it will dissolve. I think alot of tablets are testing with the assumption people will drink 250ml alongside it.

We must be the same generation.

My mother dug two triangular holes opposite each other in tins of evaporated milk to pour onto steamed puddings. If you didn't dig two, then they didn't pour properly. I don't think I ever tasted 'fresh' cream til I left home.

Same here. It looked like this:

My late MIL had a (vicious) can opener like this:

Ha! Ma had the first type. Very basic.

My Gran had a tin opener attached to the wall, that you crunched tins onto and then turned the handle to open the lid. (And then frequently took it off with bits that were still attached and dug a knife into the gaps and tried to prise the bloody thing all the way open)

Anyone remember those?

We had a wall tin opener, but it was excellent. We had two cats and opened a lot of tins!

I think my Gran's had been up since the 1930s, and was not maintained! They were usually fab, but hers was very rusty.

My grandmother had exactly the same. I think it was probably as old as she was.

It's true

It can't be true. I grew peppers this year. They started out green and then turned red. There was no yellow or orange stage, so those must be different types. It may be that the yellow and orange ones also start as green but I don't think they eventually turn red either.

I used to think that men rested their penis on the front of the seat when they sat down to go for a number two! 😂

thing47 · 28/09/2026 22:44

I didn't know until I was in my 50s that when you have a kidney transplant, they don't remove the old/non-working ones.

Then DH had one and I now know more than I ever thought I'd need to about the process!

Myrealnameisbetty · 28/09/2026 23:12

@Thesafetygeneral

Perhaps they do 😁
I'm trying to get the picture you described out of my head.

He was from Hull, born 1930, and had a strong 'old Hull' accent. I miss him.

I hear it a good bit over here (Rep of Ire) in schools too, also @PersephoneParlormaid 😃

Omg I was about 24 and doing a urine sample at the gp, kept spraying everywhere as I put the sample pot in the wrong place, ie not at urethra. Mind was blown and felt like an absolutely uneducated idiot about my own body!

In your defence though the sample pot things are ridiculously small, even with full knowledge it's a massive faff

Scorchio84 · 29/09/2026 07:42

The reason I remember it is ( it’s probably 30 years ago) that not only did he blow up a can of soup once, he also once, on another occasion when his wife was visiting her sister, put an unopened tinned steak and kidney pie in the oven, and blew the door off the oven.

Oh my god @SoupSoup 😂🙈

Another medical one. Did you all know that you can have a heart bypass operation without being put on a bypass machine? I didn't

There’s a machine?

FlexiSadie · 29/09/2026 10:02

Center Parcs isn't housed under a dome.

😀 yes, typically a heart-lung bypass machine does the heart's job for it as your heart is stopped in order for the surgeon to operate.

Many people seem to think that you are pretty much guaranteed to die in airplane crashes. Not true at all. If you take all airline accidents, the survival rate is about 98%. And even with serious accidents (defined as: aircraft had substantial damage or was destroyed, there was a fire, and at least one person was seriously injured or killed) - about 60% survival rate.
