Thrilling <ahem> Saturday night mystery for you all

Never let it be said that nothing interesting ever happens to me … In today’s episode of the world’s greatest mysteries, my electric blanket has disappeared!

Being as the weather’s on the turn, I decided earlier in the week to get the blanket out from under my ottoman bed. The lead was tangled in something and I didn’t have the time or patience to sort it on that occasion. So I went to do it earlier today and it’s not there! It’s not anywhere. I am perplexed! Where is it?!

I am not sure of many things in life, but of this I am absolutely 100% positive! It’s a mystery. But I think I will have to buy another one and learn to live with the unanswered question as to my blankets whereabouts!

have you already put it on your bed under your sheets and just not plugged it in yet because the lead was tangled?

WallaceinAnderland · 20/09/2026 17:42

I lost my kindle when I moved house in 2021. Found it this week. It's amazing where things can turn up.

Morecoffeeneedef · 20/09/2026 17:46

You put it somewhere safer and have forgotten. At least that's what I keep doing.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 20/09/2026 17:51

Has it got rolled up/turned over/folded away? Because the number of times I've been looking for something and the mental image of it in my mind (tartan, fluffy, etc) is wrong because it's upside down/folded into a package/wrapped in something else is untrue.

I once had a sink plunger become COMPLETELY INVISIBLE simply because it was lain on its side. I was looking for a sink-plunger-shaped object and it was lying there like a reject Dalek eyestalk. I just couldn't see it.

What was the lead tangled in?

I don’t actually know - something else under the bed that I couldn’t see and didn’t have time to ferret out. Also, I don’t trust the mechanism that holds the bed open, so I was yanking one-handed (that sounds dodgy) at the blanket!

I could completely see me putting it away somewhere and forgetting where if it weren’t for the fact I know I didn’t get it out from under the bed.

Maybe it’ll show up in 5 years like @WallaceinAnderland’s kindle …

A couple of years ago I lost my bikinis. As we were going away 2 weeks later I purchased some new ones.
We are now due to go away in October and I have found the old ones. So now I have 6 bikinis.

Buy a new electric blanket and the old one will turn up.

Yes I think I’m going to have to buy a new one.

Just to get things straight.

You looked in the ottoman, realised it was tangled and decided to leave it. Now you have gone to get it again and it’s vanished.

When did you see it tangled? Was that recently?
Are you sure the tangled lead was the lead for the blanket and was it connected to the blanket at the time?
Have you put anything else in, or taken anything else out of the ottoman?

One of the people in the room is the killer.

ilovemykindle · 20/09/2026 18:18

@Electrabythey were in a bag that was in a bag that was in a suitcase at the back of the attic.
We are getting the loft reboarded that's why this case has been got out.
I blame DH for not searching properly.

LoveHearts69 · 20/09/2026 19:12

Ooo do you have a MIL? 🤣 things ALWAYS go missing after mine comes. She unhelpfully rearranged a cupboard once and I’ve never found my favourite vase (that was in it) again since!

Yes that’s right - it was one day earlier in the week, can’t remember exactly when. I’m pretty sure it was the lead for the blanket, I don’t think I have anything else under there with a lead (it’s all bedding).

No MIL.

Anyway - any recommendations for a good new one please?

I remember a thread ages ago and someone’s ironing board disappeared. Don’t think she ever found it.

anyone else in the house moved it? Is it on the bed? Did you leave it under the bed or take it out and dump it? Is it in the bath?

I thought the ironing board had been found on top of a wardrobe but when I said this on another thread someone told me it had never been found 🤷‍♀️

SharkyBait · 20/09/2026 21:29

Have you checked the salad drawer in the fridge?

noodlezoodle · 20/09/2026 21:32

Ooh I love a good 'missing item' thread. I'm still haunted by the ironing board.

Have you checked that you didn't put it on your bed in a fugue state, and that it's also not on DS's bed?

I thought this too! On top of the wardrobe in the spare room!

Although that might have been something else, as there's quite often a thread of this kind, which I find immensely reassuring as someone who managed to lose two baking sheets in a very small kitchen once.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 21/09/2026 08:36

Just this morning I found our fire stick in a laptop bag. I had to buy a new one in July because I couldn’t find it. 🙈

Yes and I found some green beans slowly turning into liquid mush that I bought on my second day here (so 3 weeks ago). But no electric blanket :(.

Thank you for the recommendation @GargoylesofBeelzebub but I want the type you put underneath you on the bed.

My toaster once vanished for days. My DS had put it right at the back two shelves down. Something like that?

So your son's a Protestant then....?

Oh I was under the impression that it was what I call an electric blanket which is in fact a heated throw but you are talking about an electric blanket like my grandparents had, that sit under your sheet on the bed… interesting! I used to LOVE staying with them especially for the lovely warm bed, my grandma used to go up an hour before bed and switch everyone’s blankets on!
I can’t help I’m afraid, other than suggesting rechecking your ds bed, but I would recommend a few heated throws anyway - I have 3, one in my office, one on the sofa and one in my bedroom! I used to just own one and was constantly unplugging it and transporting it around the house but the mechanism/control panels aren’t very robust and I kept knocking it as I was wandering the house with it, it didn’t last very long. Now I just keep them in situ and they’re all still going strong a year later!

Electraby · 21/09/2026 10:14

@TheChosenTwo yes one of the old fashioned types. I held out buying one for years after heeding my dad’s warnings of them being very dangerous (which, tbf, the ones he knew in the 50’s, probably were). But then I got one and loved it and now it’s GONE 😭

She broke it and moved stuff to hide the gap.
I have lost 2 wreath hangers that I saw on Saturday but could not find yesterday.

Madisnttheword · 21/09/2026 20:50

It's definitely under a bed
