Sad to hear about Stephanie Cole.

She was so good in many shows - Open All Hours, Waiting For God, etc. I loved her turn in The Cleaner as the murderous old lady and of course as Carolyn in Cabin Pressure.

A sad time for CP fans - Carolyn and Herc reunited.

Oh I loved her. Her character in OAH reminded me so much of my wonderfully forthright late auntie.

I remember getting shown some episodes of Tenko in secondary school to illustrate what women had endured in the concentration camps and later watched all the series myself as an adult. The performances are off the charts.

moggerhanger · 18/09/2026 17:31

I use a quote from Carolyn most days. (Especially "oh, a [child] with a thought, how the gods smile upon me!") RIP Stephanie, you were brilliant.

professionalcommentreader · 18/09/2026 17:31

She was hilarious in The Cleaner

KittyHigham · 18/09/2026 17:32

Carolyn and Herc reunited. I JUST Posted the same.
she will be so fondly remembered but a sad day nonetheless

Dogdogdogdig · 18/09/2026 17:32

My mum adored her in Tenko.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/09/2026 17:33

I still want to be Auntie Joan when I grow up

feellikeanalien · 18/09/2026 17:34

I used to love her in Tenko. She was a very good actress.

Bitofashock · 18/09/2026 17:37

An absolute legend. Fabulous comedy actress. Another member of the Cabin Pressure crew gone.

Aviarythebird · 18/09/2026 17:38

That’s so sad. She made a big impression on me as a child in Tenko and she was just fab as Carolyn in CP.

ItsmeMargo · 18/09/2026 17:38

My first real TV memory of her was ‘A Bit of a Do’ - she played tipsy very well!

Bananalanacake · 18/09/2026 17:44

I was interested to find she was only 49 when she first appeared in Waiting for God. Like me now..

JoBrodie · 18/09/2026 17:48

She was great in Housewife, 49 with Victoria Wood (it's not a comedy though there are plenty of amusing bits). It's on YouTube

Her Talking Heads is one of the best.

Absolutely.

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 18/09/2026 17:51

Sorry meant to add her performance in Tenko. Made quite an impression on the young me.

GlaikitWeeNyaff · 18/09/2026 17:51

That’s sad; my favourite role of hers was in Cabin Pressure - it will be Arthur’s Jet Now.

Pieceofpurplesky · 18/09/2026 17:57

RIP. Tenko was one show that really opened my eyes to both the life for women in WW2 and how good acting should be. She was in many other great shows.

ExplodingSmittens · 18/09/2026 18:01

I’m another one who was allowed to stay up to watch Tenko. I can remember it vividly.

She was fantastic in Coronation Street too.

TishToshByGosh · 18/09/2026 18:01

Another who really enjoyed her performance in Tenko. A stand out moment was when she quietly said to Marion (of Nelly)"I loved that girl". So understated yet so poignant - brilliant acting.

Ohnobackagain · 18/09/2026 18:05

She was wonderful in Tenko and hilarious as Diana Trent in Waiting for God. RIP Stephanie.

JurgenKloppsTeeth · 18/09/2026 18:46

I’m sad to hear this; she was a wonderful actress and I used to love Waiting for God (though am shocked she was only 49!).

I have never heard of Tenko but am now going to seek it out based on your recommendations.

dontcallmelen · 18/09/2026 18:57

A wonderful actress with sublime comedy timing but also extremely versatile outstanding in Tenko & the talking heads soldering on, I’d forgotten she was in A bit of a do that was such a great series as well very sad news.

Sereine · 19/09/2026 02:06

I'm really sorry about this. She was perfect casting as Carolyn Knapp-Shappey, and it was clear that Finnemore really enjoyed writing for her. I still treasure the memory of, and use, "What is the matter with you two, then? ... Ooh, hang on, I’ve just realised – I don’t care."

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/09/2026 07:48

Very sad to hear this, and also to learn that in her final years she was living with Alzheimer's. John Finnemore is asking for recommendations for a very brief clip (15-20 secs) from Cabin Pressure for a longer piece he wants to write about Stephanie Cole for Substack: https://substack.com/@johnfinnemore/note/c-340234611

A lot of the obvious ones have already been mentioned. So many candidates! I'm hearing all of these in her voice.

“Gordon, how necessary to see you” talking to her ex-husband.

"... when Douglas and Martin say they have a complaint and she says “Oh dear me. Tell you what: why don't you write it down, put it in an envelope, tear it in half, throw it away, and shut your face?"

‘“because you are lazy, lazy pilots”

“Martin. Only Father Christmas cares about what you want.”

"I don’t have an airline. I have one jet. You cannot put one jet in a line. if MJN is anything, it is an airdot."

“I paid you to use it to fly a franking machine to Paris, not to fly a multi-coloured confectionery brick to Cumbria and drop it on a fish!”

“Ladies and gentlemen, the captain has now illuminated the seat belt sign, so please ensure your baggage and duty-free are safely stowed, your tray tables are folded away, and your seat is returned to the upright position. Or, as they say in Limerick ...
The captain has turned on the signs,
So stow away bags of all kinds.
Then make sure your tray
Is folded away
And your seatback no longer reclines.”

“Martin, you are many things but, believe me, you are not ‘Sir.’ If anyone is Sir, I am Sir; and as Sir I am telling you from now on diversions are out.”

I'm with the person who says Unhelpful, I know, but you could stick a pin in any 15-20 seconds of Stephanie Cole delivering your words and they would be perfect. She will be so missed.

cariadlet · 19/09/2026 08:06

Like many others on here, I first saw her in Tenko. I was a teen when it was first shown and used to watch it with my mum. Many years later, I came across a channel that was repeating it and rewatched it with my own teenage daughter.

John Finnemore was talking about her on R4 Today earlier this morning. She was brilliant on Cabin Pressure.

RIP Stephanie Cole
EstherGreenwood63 · 19/09/2026 08:13

So sad. She was a very good actress. Might rewatch the brilliant Tenko. Requiescat in pace Stephanie.
