What makes a middle aged woman so teenage like?

milanopop · 15/09/2026 12:15

A Grandmother at the school gates in her late 40s maybe early 50s.
She has the energy of a teenager, looks about a size 6 and just looks as if she’s never grown up.
Her voice is young and she is quite child like, I just wondered what makes someone like this?
I am quite envious.
I wouldn’t say she was beautiful or anything but she just looks like a teenager but older.
We saw the family on holiday in a local resort and she was there up on the dance floor dancing to club like music like a choreographer, so much energy and youth.

Feels like 2 separate questions here. Her body is obviously genetic and her personality cultivated through zest for life. The latter is what I aspire to, the former seems a bit irrelevant. You can be tall and/or broad and still seem youthful!

Junespun · 15/09/2026 14:31

It's hard to say without seeing her. I can't think of anyone like that myself. While the woman in question might be a literal grandmother, late 40's to early 50's isn't what I'd consider the typical grandmother as there are loads of women in that age range with young kids themselves.

Also when it comes to perceived age I notice people lean into different things. One person feels they look young because they are thin or petite, another thinks they look young because they still do lots of sport, another person might they seem youthful because they have beautiful line free skin and lovely hair, someone else its about how they dress and for others it's that they still live it up and go clubbing and anything else you can think of and I think the same goes for how we perceive age in others. Someone else might look at the women you mention and not see her as teenage like at all because what they zone in on as youthful aren't the same as the things you do.

waves 👋
Haha, except I'm not a grandma!
Amd my face/skin is defo not teen-like close up 😅
Ex dancers, comfy and confident in leggings and get cheap kids trainers as only size 2! So maybe more youthful looking there too?
Id also give it my all on the dance floor would but see me bed bound the day after as riddled with arthritis and hEDS now 😭

I think sometime people see small amd slender and think young.
From behind/side I'm often mistaken as younger.

Definitely not, she is well spoken/respected

You don't think well spoken people can take coke? That's probably the main target market.

Oh, bless. Do you imagine people who do coke are living in doorways and shoplifting to feed their habit?

I did ask her if she was a dancer and she said no, she was just having fun with the kids.
She is tiny and can’t be much more than 5 foot, tiny feet skinny legs and thigh gap, flat stomach I think she could wear my 10 year old clothes but no boobs or shape which I think is why she looks so child like.
She just doesn’t seem like she has the temperament of an adult, so much energy and bounce, like a teen that can’t sit still.

You are a bit bonkers about her weight. Are there no other thin women where you live?!

Maybe I'm being a bit easily offended here, but is this thread really asking by what magic someone in their late 40s might be energetic, as if you would expect them to be a broken husk by then? Some people are just more energetic by nature, it's not a great mystery. I'm also not sure why it's more surprising for someone to be short and thin at 50 than at any other adult age!

I know it’s absolutely bonkers. I am 54 size 6/8 and go to the gym every morning. I’m small of boob. I am the mother of a 16 year old so not dancing with her but if i came across a small child I could run about with it/dance with it. Im not anything special/an outlier.

GoodGirlFaith · 15/09/2026 15:23

I used to work with a lady like this and I still see her now and then and she lives near me. She is 70 now. Last time I saw her in passing, she was out in her front garden with a hedge trimmer.

Early 50's is young to be a grandmother and young, generally, really.

Not sitting around and just getting outside gardening, walking and having fun helps, I think.

malloryknox123 · 15/09/2026 15:24

Are you a bit jealous? Describing her as skinny and having no boobs seems a little passive aggressive

Unfortunately at least part of it is size.

People who are very petite and small statured and slim generally do look younger.

Meadowfinch · 15/09/2026 15:27

Are you sure she's a grandmother? I was 49 when my ds started reception at 4. Now at 63 I still run 10k each week or more. I've always disliked standing around waiting too so I can understand why she might fidget.

She's probably just quite energetic.

Well spoken and respected people don’t do coke? That’s naive!

Yes her son is mid to late 20s and its his children she collects.

It's almost always down to genetics, and being petite definitely helps. People often thought I was my son's girlfriend until I was at least 50 (I had him when I was 20). And no I didn't remotely encourage it and quickly disavowed them! I'm a smoker, enjoy a drink and have never set foot in a gym. I'm 70 now. But to be honest, someone in their 40's shouldn't normally be haggard and worn out. I was a ball of energy in my 40's as I suspect are most women.

I agree , being small helps. Small people generally have more energy than tall people.

Yeah, I’m agree with this
In real life, people are very energetic at this age I find

I just mentioned the dance thing because I thought it might account for some of it but there is a lot of of this around

mcmuffin22 · 15/09/2026 16:16

She's a very young grandmother! She is the age of me and many of my friends and we are still full of energy! She also doesn't sound like a teenager - or none that I know who are generally sullen 😁 She just sounds like she's of small build.

Ineedanewsofa · 15/09/2026 16:24

My friend’s MIL is like this, she was the last one standing on the hen do!
Apparently she’s always been that way, got told off for not being able to sit still at school, never needed much sleep, always has to have a passion project on the go, needs lots of exercise to feel tired.
If she was a child today she’d probably get diagnosed with ADHD…

I know a few tiny women, in height, weight and bone structure, who always have that youthful energy about them, partly because they are treated as childlike all their lives by other people. A friend of mine is like this. Tiny and lively and still pretty, even into her sixties. She seems to engender (without trying to) a sort of protective reaction from men and is treated as if she is cute,. A lifetime of that has you inevitably playing into it to some extent, unless you find it really annoying. (I know some tiny women who do and they are not still youthful in the same way.)

Anonanonanonagain · 15/09/2026 17:40

Amusing thread. Only my body definitely is not like a prepubescent boy and I have no grandchildren you could be talking about me! I was out recently on a night out giving it my all on the dancefloor. Had great fun and because of my age I do not give the slightest fuck what others think, I had a blast and that is all that matters. I rarely sit, love to be busy, look much younger than my age but have never had that great a diet and have never stopped drinking so not sure what to say on that score. Maybe I was born with it cos I don't even wear Maybelline lol

ownedbymydogs · 15/09/2026 19:18

Reformer Pilates. Combined with Mounjaro I feel 20 years younger.😂

If she could wear ten year olds clothes, that isn't something to envy.

Dancing around in your 40s?!! Whatever next!! I bloody well hope I’m dancing around in my late 40s!

Kingdomofsleep · 15/09/2026 12:29

Maybe I'd have to see the woman to understand, but from your description alone, I don't envy this woman. I don't want to look like a teenager at nearly 40 (in my case, nearly 50 in hers). I'm proud of being a grown woman and I'd rather be seen to have calm poise than be like a giggly schoolgirl on the dance floor. Nothing wrong with being a girl when you are a girl, but I'm a woman now.

Edited

My thoughts too. Nothing you described made me feel envious. 🤷‍♀️

MidnightMusing5 · 15/09/2026 19:39

I might get flamed for this but I’ve found over the years , the “naturally” skinny women (they don’t exercise they are just slim) I find when I get to know these women they have very “jealous “ personalities. Like they will get jealous over little things.
