Do secondary school pupils usually shower after PE in state schools?

Is it normal/common/unusual for Secondary school pupils to shower on school after PE? DH and I are discussing it and we have no real idea as our DC isn’t the age yet. He assumes they do, I assume they don’t. Who is right? I’m talking normal state schools, not private.

No they don’t!

concertinacornflake · 14/09/2026 21:03

Not these days.

MadMAGA · 14/09/2026 21:04

No. There are communal showers but they're not used, on pain of being known forever as the kid that showered at school. They are sometimes used for students who can't shower at home for whatever reason, but in private before school.

My DD has been at both a state and private school and there’s no showering - v old fashioned. I didn’t even shower at my grammar school in the 90’s!

rubyslippers · 14/09/2026 21:06

Nope

AuntyBulgaria · 14/09/2026 21:06

No. We didn't shower back in the 80's

This is really interesting, thanks everyone. Classrooms must stink! 🙈

I don’t think there even are showers at the DC’s school!

ratatouillemousesqueak · 14/09/2026 21:12

No showering at ours either. I’m quite glad as it would lead to more bullying and lost items!!

ratatouillemousesqueak · 14/09/2026 21:12

To add - during the winter when they’re doing muddy sports I send a small towel to wipe off the mud!!

Ribenaberry12 · 14/09/2026 21:12

No, not anymore. I remember having ‘shower checks’ at school in the 90s. To avoid having to be stark naked in front of half the year group we’d just wrap ourselves in a towel and splash our shoulders and then go line up for shower check which, in hindsight, was just that the PE teachers had forgotten to take the register at the start of the lesson and were checking we’d all come back in.

My DD can’t believe that not only did we all have to shower together in the big square communal shower in the 80s, but our PE teacher would supervise to make sure we didn’t just run in and out!

This was my experience! God, it was horrendous. I’m really so pleased to read the answers to this thread!

Nope. And they don’t change either. My daughter has PE and two periods of dance on Tuesdays then 5 hours of dance class after school. Super gross afterwards!

AutumnLover1999 · 14/09/2026 21:18

My son never did and he's 33 now. We did regularly in the 80s. I think it traumatized us for life 😯

autumnisherenow · 14/09/2026 21:19

The PE teacher will decide when PE activities end, and probably wouldn’t allow pupils sufficient time for showering before they had to get to their next lesson, get in the lunch queue etc.
If the school offers swimming then pupils might be able to dip in the shower afterwards for a minute or two. But realistically the average PE teacher probably isn’t concerned about the students smelling fresh in their next lesson.
PE lessons have to go into the same timetable slots as other lessons, also, how many kids want to lug towels and shower gel around in addition to their PE kit.

Never ever walk past a boys changing room after it has been used. Lynx will be forever embedded in your nostrils.

Thecomfortador · 14/09/2026 21:21

We never showered, at school in the 90s. I do remember choking on deodorant though as everyone sprayed so much of the stuff in the changing rooms.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 14/09/2026 21:21

No

BirdLandedonmyHead · 14/09/2026 21:25

They barely have enough time to change and get to their next lesson.

Theres 65 girls in DDs PE class. A GCSE PE class and a dance class happen at the same time (so another 20+) girls. Plus the same number of boys. The logistics would be impossible.

We did, we were still showering after PE up until I left in 94.

MiddleAgedDread · 14/09/2026 21:31

I left secondary school in 1995 and we never had showers apart from after swimming with primary school.

thismummydrinksgin · 14/09/2026 21:35

No, probably for the best

LoudSnoringDog · 14/09/2026 21:37

I very vividly remember our PE teacher standing and watching us all shower
