Do secondary school pupils usually shower after PE in state schools?

Is it normal/common/unusual for Secondary school pupils to shower on school after PE? DH and I are discussing it and we have no real idea as our DC isn’t the age yet. He assumes they do, I assume they don’t. Who is right? I’m talking normal state schools, not private.

Started year 7 in ‘86 (first year back then) and we all had to absolutely shower after PE.

open cubicles too.

I had to shower after PE at high school in the mid 90s although it died a death mid way through my time there.

It was a long block of showers and we were expected to run through. It was hellish. I was always jealous of the girls who had their mothers write a note about a verucca or something. Mine point blank refused.

I do remember one girl turning up for the very first PE lesson of year seven with a spongebag which included showergel and a sponge. Bless her, at least her mother had thought about it.

One of the first questions I asked in the PE block of my DDs school was do they have to shower and the answer was a definite no.

We had showers in my PE block at secondary school (they had doors!). But nobody was allowed to use them 🤷‍♀️. Rumour was only the school sports teams were allowed to use them, but I don't think they used them either!

No and classrooms do stink, generally of Lynx combined with sweat.

Are people really only buying their sons lynx and not a proper quality deodorant?! My 15 year old does PE, BTEC sports and then goes to gym after school and he never smells!

sarahwarah11 · 14/09/2026 22:03

I went to a girls school from 1982-1989 and never had a shower after PE.

Minasama · 14/09/2026 22:07

Mine don’t. We used to back in the 1980s.

WhereAreWeNow · 14/09/2026 22:08

We had to shower at my state school in the 80s. DD didn't. Not sure if it was lack of time or lack of school funds for hot water but either way showers weren't an option!

Tickingcrocodile · 14/09/2026 22:10

No they don't. They are rushed out of the changing rooms as quick as possible - lucky things. (Traumatic flashback of running naked through communal shower each week with sadistic teacher standing at the end making sure we were all wet enough.)

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 14/09/2026 22:26

No. We never did in the nineties and noughties either, unless it was after swimming when we had private showers we could use if we wanted.

Poppingby · 14/09/2026 22:45

Mine don't. DD said they don't move much in PE anyway so there was no need Hmm

Smartiepants79 · 14/09/2026 23:01

No time for showers!

HiCandles · 14/09/2026 23:04

Definitely not. At my state school in the 00s the communal shower blocks were used as equipment storage. After swimming we all got approximately 30 seconds under a lukewarm dribble in our swimsuits before being barked at to move along.

SpreadsheetLife · 14/09/2026 23:20

Our high school had a shower block but it was never used. I don't recall ever exercising hard enough to build up a sweat though! Unless you were one of the sporty kids, you were just handed a badminton racquets and left to it!

QueenOfThorns · 14/09/2026 23:27

Ha! We were supposed to run through holding our towels in the air, but nobody did. We all just kept our towels wrapped around ourselves and stepped over the water jets. Never got more than our feet wet Grin

novalia89 · 14/09/2026 23:29

No they don't. But I don't remember ever sweating enough to ever need one.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 14/09/2026 23:34

We didn’t even shower when I was at school. We washed our feet and said we had our period 😆

OhNoooooooooooooooo · 14/09/2026 23:37

If PE is anytlike we didn't school, you're not really moving around that much to build up a proper sweat.

We didn't things like netball drills of passing a ball, or hockey skills of passing a ball, or javelin where you all stand around watching someone throwing a pointy stick. Or rounders, where you site around for 20 minutes, walk up to try and hit a small ball, and maybe dash 40m maximum. Probably 13/2 or 24 really to get to first or second. Then stand and wait for next batter, then finish your run.

Not exactly 45m of HIIT is it?

JustSawJohnny · 14/09/2026 23:39

I'm so glad they don't have communal showers any more.

It was pure torture in the 80's.

So much so that I had flashbacks at a recent visit to Center Parcs Spa.

I do not wish to be naked or see naked randoms around me ever, EVER again!

Bluespottedfrog · 14/09/2026 23:43

No. The shower area is used as an overflow for changing in (in my daughters girl heavy year group)

There was a thread regarding this and other things that don't happen at school now, a couple of months ago.

When I was at High School (years ago) everyone had to shower (a communal shower). The P.E. teacher then checked we had actually showered by asking us to open our bath towel so she could see!

Crazy times!

BirdLandedonmyHead · 15/09/2026 07:05

Despite them not using it for PE, I know the school does have a functioning shower block, as they use it during school camp.

littlebilliie · 15/09/2026 07:09

Horrendous memories unlocked of showering as a group in freezing open shower room in 1980s twice a week. It was awful

TickedOffAndALittleFedUp · 15/09/2026 07:30

We had to shower in communal showers in the 80's. The PE teacher watched you run through and handed you a towel as you came out dripping. These days there's not enough time and it's a quick change and onto next lesson.

Bobbieiris · 15/09/2026 07:35

Yes we did when I was at secondary, 2000-2006. And a teacher supervised so it was enforced. I hated those showers!! They were individual and not communal though
