Is having £2,000 left after bills each month a lot?

Today I was chatting to my sister about the cost of living. She mentioned that she and her husband 'only' now have about 2k left each month after bills and food.

Am I out of touch or is this a huge amount? We have about £700 on a good month!!

After every single bill, food, clothes, kids club etc then yes 2k is a huge amount!

BooksandSlippers · 13/09/2026 20:32

Loads.

Yes. That’s a lot.

is that after savings?

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 13/09/2026 20:35

Yes

ilikedrivinginmycaritsnotquiteajaguar · 13/09/2026 20:38

It’s more than my monthly wage….so yes that’s a lot

SpottyAlpaca · 13/09/2026 20:39

Yes, it’s a lot. I consider myself to be comfortably off & my mortgage is paid off but I don’t have £2k a month in disposable income. The figure is above but much closer to £1k, and it has taken me decades to get myself to this position.

Yewlez · 13/09/2026 20:39

It's loads!! How can they possibly think it isn't?

nevertherightweather · 13/09/2026 20:40

That would be a bloody dream for me

daisyydaisyy · 13/09/2026 20:41

I have about £50 left after I pay my bills, do a food shop, pay my monthly debt repayments and pay for my driving lessons. I may be able to go out once a month at a push sometimes. I’d fucking kill to have £2k left. My wage isn’t even 2k.

SerendipityCat · 13/09/2026 20:43

Well, considering £2k a month is not much less than our household income for the month, I'd say your sister doesn't know how bloody lucky she is.

BuddhaAtSea · 13/09/2026 20:45

What, to just fritter? She’s got loads, but no common sense. I don’t have a single penny left every month, they all have a job.

Yellowchair1 · 13/09/2026 20:45

It depends what she is counting as a bill? If she just means mortgage & utilities, I wouldn't say that is much left given how much things like petrol/childcare/children's activities etc cost

SunshineSpice · 13/09/2026 20:45

It’s obviously loads. Seems like a wind up post to me.

LurkyLarry · 13/09/2026 20:45

That's more than my monthly take home & I live a comfortable life, so yes, that's a lot!

WaverleyOwl · 13/09/2026 20:53

I'm currently counting the hours till my husband gets paid so that I can buy more food, so I would say that your sister is massively out of touch with reality.

Growlybear83 · 13/09/2026 20:58

It’s a huge amount! I spent most of my adult life being thankful if my overdraft hadn't increased at the end of each month, let alone having anything left over.

Because only people who claim those things can post on MN? Didn’t realise that was a rule.

It’s a good amount but if she had more before if for instance her mortgage rate has increased then she will feel aggrieved. It’s out of touch with the general populace but maybe a decrease for her overall.

Someone wrote on here how they have a mortgage rate of under 1% that was fixed before Covid so I imagine she will be in for a huge shock once she gets her new deal.

Fieldday26 · 13/09/2026 21:09

Obviously it’s a lot, everyone including her knows it’s a lot. I’m assuming what she means is that everyone’s bills have gone up, food has gone up a ridiculous amount etc and even with a huge left over amount, it’s now quite a bit less then even a year or two ago.
