Potential 6 month warning until the end

So, we potentially only have 6 months until the end of civilised society and mass deaths. I’m terrified and sad

AI staff 'genuinely frightened' for humanity's future, ex-Anthropic researcher tells BBC www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1kx0gyje9wo

But they aren’t? That isn’t happening?

What? Of course it’s not happening right now or we’d be over. This is what they’re warning could happen in the immediate future as the Ai is becoming out of their control

No. But he knows about AI. And he’s not the one leading on this. Is Amodei and Altman who are very much sane

And are they saying humanity ends in 2030? Or is that just Musk? Who I reckon would say the moon is going to turn purple and explode if it got him the attention he craves.

Why do you all think you know better than the ex head of ethics of Anthropic, the current CEO and current head of data science, the CEO of Open AI and the other dozens who’ve recently resigned saying the same thing?

Seriously, I’m interested?

So will you now be spending every penny of your life savings over the next 3 years?

Seriously, I’m interested?

Ashmoleum · 13/09/2026 11:16

The one thing I'm glad about now is deciding not to have any children. Today's and tomorrow's world must be a worry for parents. But I suppose our own parents and grandparents worried about us back in the day too.

In 1999, some of the experts said the new millennium would cause planes to fall from sky, banking systems to disrupt and internet systems to interpret 00 as 1900 which would cause widespread chaos.

And yet…

There are some proper little rays of sunshine on Mumsnet today 😁☀

This made me smile 😊 Seriously, life can be hard enough in the here and now, why ruin the present worrying by things that either may never happen or that you have zero control over.

Live for today and get as much joy as you can out of this week.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 13/09/2026 11:16

Genuinely (and gently) OP, do.you truly believe these claims? As much as AI is supposedly on course to becoming the thing that wipes us all out a la Terminator style, (and one theory my DH agrees with), I think there is probably a very minute chance of it taking only three months.

If it is going to happen, I guess I should just sell my house, live in a hotel for a couple of months, then go travelling on the money I make. Sounds a great way to end.

Itiswhysofew · 13/09/2026 11:16

My niece reckons 3 years.
Think I'll go 🤪

Sounds to me like "we've only got x amount of time to do something about the climate emergeency", but let's at least be thhankful it's knocked that particular hysteria off the front page

I don't tend to get worked up over such headlines, but the point you're missing with "The head’s of Anthropic, Open AI and Elon Musk have said they agree", Frombeyond, is that these are the people who pushed so hard for AI development in the first place

Never mind though; warfare has changed and all an enemy needs to do is shut down the internet completely to reduce western societies to chaos ... and what use is the much-vaunted AI then?

Again, read Amodei. He explains why he started AI, what he believes what it can do (positive) and why it’s a crucial - and very limited - point in time to stop the negatives which he believes, along with the rest of the AI community could bring down humanity. If we don’t do something now.

I can't be bothered to worry about things I can't control. Have enough going on In my life!

Darker · 13/09/2026 10:48

I agree with you @EveryoneUsingOutro , in that there is nothing we can do and worrying about it won’t make any difference. The best thing we can do is try not to let it get us down.

It’s a hard thing to discuss in real life. Yet we’ve all heard the news. We all know what’s been said.

Not me, what’s been said ?!

Whatabouterry · 13/09/2026 11:19

I’m not sure why people are so dismissive OP. I think the lack of regulation has been reckless beyond belief.

HangryBrickShark · 13/09/2026 11:19

Since the dawn of time the world has been going to end according to some. Sir Issac Newton, Jim Jones, Harold Camping, HG Wells too name but a few.

No point worrying about it. It will happen after everyone on Mumsnet is dead in about a million years.

EXACTLY! And yet, the computer experts of the world pulled together and produced the fix for the Millenium Bug issue. Without that all computers would have failed. They averted disaster. Great example of what the global community can do when faced with threat

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/09/2026 11:21

the proposed ‘go slow’ framework from Anthropic CEO clearly explains how it won’t allow China to bypass the US and goes into much detail on this

I've read the "essay", @Frombeyond, and wonder where the CEO and his detail will be if it turns out China can do this after all

If we accept the hypothesis that AI can move beyond control, it follows logically that we also won't be able to control what other regimes do with it, and I expect we've all seen too many assurances about "unbreakable systems" which turn out not to be unbreakable after all to have much faith in future ones

Bohemond23 · 13/09/2026 11:21

Arnie was sent back from 2029 in Terminator. Just saying.

the Tech giants are already there - they’re begging for an agreement to slow down. Anthropic and Open AI boss. Even Musk has said today it’s needed.

what WE can do is raise the conversation and the social pressure so governments’ listen. As these threads show so many people don’t understand the threat or think it’s ’tin foil hat’ situation. Again, probably because they’re not properly informed. You can get the word out and get the potential solution out.

what WE can do is raise the conversation and the social pressure so governments’ listen.

Can you say a bit about how you're going to raise the conversation and the social pressure so governments listen?

Or does it solely involve starting threads on Mumsnet, to tell everyone you're 'terrified and sad'?

Not in the least bit worried especially as my phones' ai can't even remember where I live most of the time let alone take over the world 🤣

HorseandHeron · 13/09/2026 11:25

OP, the end of the world has been nigh for centuries, millenia even.

Nigh is a long way away. No point in worrying.

Take action against AI and climate change by all means, but don't assume we'll all be goners by 2027.

I am in my sixties and have heard this so many times: nuclear war was going to kill us all in 1970s but didn't; Y2K computer bug would stop all computers from working leading to all machines stopping working - no access to money from banks, all hospital equipment failing etc etc, but didn't; AIDS, bird flu, Covid would wipe us all out but didn't.

Life goes on.

Sprinklesandsprinkles · 13/09/2026 11:25

DH who works with AI believes in it OP. It's a runaway train

user35637865986 · 13/09/2026 11:25

How old are you OP?
I’m assuming not old enough that you didn’t live through the Cold War where we were told a nuclear winter was coming any minute?
Aids was going to kill everyone.
Y2K was going to end civilisation as we knew it.
Even Covid was going to wipe everyone out, but ended up being a few million which is hardly a blip in a population of Billions…panic and misery sells papers/internet clicks. Get out for a walk you’ll feel much better!

Happyjoe · 13/09/2026 11:25

Reminds me a little of Y2K, the scaremongering. Anyway, if it happens, it happens. At least nature would be happy going by how much better it did during lockdown! Ha.

throwaway3749574 · 13/09/2026 11:25

Switch it off at the wall, surely? If AI gets any ideas!

YOU think (what - the you who knows better than the leading experts in the field?) PROBABLY A VERY MINUTE CHANCE (again, what exactly are you basing this view on?).

The way people just assume that everything will be okay, completely ignoring the fact that those who are warning us are the people who actually know what they're talking about, is why we're in the situation we're now in. This is the age of stupid. Humans have developed beings which will very soon be far more intelligent than we are and will become the master race. And for what? So that a few people could become richer and have, arguably, higher status among humans for a few years.

Most of the posts on this thread are from people who are completely ignorant and want to stay that way, or are in denial.

Slimtoddy · 13/09/2026 11:27

I have tried to put pressure on government to eradicate child poverty - didn't work
I tried to put pressure on government to improve NHS - didn't work
I tried to put pressure on government to not get involved in war - didn't work
I tried to put pressure on government to be cognisant of climate change - didn't work
I tried to put pressure on government to narrow the gap between rich and poor - didn't work
I tried to put pressure on government to improve life expectancy - didn't work
I could go on.....
