We have had family staying for 5 days. It’s lovely to see them, very grateful for them etc but omg I can’t wait to have the house to ourselves again tomorrow.

What are weirdest/most deranged/worst stories about guests that have stayed in your house?? Or maybe it’s the hosts who have been totally unhinged?

One of our current guests is generally just a bit messy, but the thing I don’t understand is that every time he goes to the bathroom he turns the loo roll round in the holder and puts in back the other way round. In our house we’re always “over” with the loo roll but he turns it to “under”. Every single time, even when I think did he even use the loo roll, he was just cleaning his teeth. I thought well maybe that’s just a thing for him and that’s how they have it at home but nooooooo they have theirs “over” at home. I know it’s such a small thing but I’m just so confused!! Hardly the worst crime, I know - there must be some good ones out there though!

Please make me laugh this morning!

In laws. They hate the fact that I’m vegan and that have a separate fridge for non vegan foods for my partner, one of our children and our dogs. Every time they have stayed they make horrible comments about being vegan and they buy non vegan food and put it in the vegan fridge despite being politely asked not to. Last time they came, they bought what my partner said must have been £80 worth of steaks and put them in the vegan fridge. It’s purposely done to try to upset me but this time my partner was so pissed off on my behalf that he cooked them, fed them to our dogs and took the rest around to our neighbours for their dogs. 😂

This is truly an awful and malicious thing to do. So glad your partner stood up for you. Puts my loo roll woes into perspective!

Many moons ago when I was single, between husbands and not in a relationship at all, a whole load of friends descended on our town for my friend's birthday. One of the blokes had travelled a long way so stayed at mine, in the spare room, on the Saturday night. We were entirely platonic friends. Now my neighbours all knew I lived alone and had no boyfriend - this is fairly crucial.

Around about 9am on the Sunday morning I woke up to hear a right kerfuffle going on in the street outside (can't remember what about), so I threw some clothes on and went to see what was going on. Most of my neighbours were either outside or standing in their front doorways watching events unfold. Anyway, it all settled down and I turned to go back inside, to see my friend, in his pyjamas and my pink dressing gown he'd found in the bathroom, standing at the open front door.

In front of all my neighbours he says loudly: "Are you coming back to bed now?".

Bastard. 🙄😂

Edited

This is hilarious, our neighbours are proper net curtain twitchers they would have been talking about that for months after!

Old neighbour of ours (on the farm back in '91, Mr Jenkins) took in his long lost brother after not seeing or hearing anything from him for 25 years, he just turned up on doorstep. They put him up in the annex and on the third day he sub-letted the place to a plumber and charged him 6 months rent up front. He then stole Mr Jenkins tractor and drove it all the way to Glossop which was his last reported sighting. Turns out he wasn't even related to Mr Jenkins and was a well known conman.
I had my suspicions when Mr Jenkins introduced him as he had a full head of hair and Mr Jenkins was born bald, I remember saying to my husband something isn't right here but he wouldn't listen

Not quite the same as X was a very dear friend, and still is. She and her daughter came to stay after her daughter’s graduation so they could have a few days out. ‘Mi casa, su casa’ I was happy for her to help herself to anything, use toiletries in the bathroom, cook food etc as I had to be out at work. But I was a bit surprised when she said ‘gosh, we both both forgot deodorant. I hope you don’t mind, we borrowed your roll-on. Oh and I’ve borrowed a pair of your pants as I didn’t bring enough’.

In my late teens, my aunt (mother's sister) came to stay for a couple of months. She lived abroad and we were all really excited. Until, every morning at breakfast she launched into a speech about how "spotty" I was (I wasn't) and how beautiful my cousin / her daughter was (subjective) and how she bets I wished I looked like said daughter. (I didn't)

The horrible thing was, a few weeks later my cousin was in a car crash, and her right eye was permanently damaged, and yes, she did lose a fair amount of her looks. I was devastated, but I also couldn't help but remember how much my aunt had mocked me and bigged up my cousin.

This will out me to anyone who knows me. But we hosted for several years in a row the parents of a friend of DH's. The first time we ever met them was the first time we hosted them. They came to our part of the world annually for a festival, 4 days long and usually stayed a day or so on either side to 'settle in' and 'catch their breath'.

They never ONCE bought a gift for us, not even a bottle of wine. I sucked it up because DH said it was important to him to be generous to his friend's parents. TBF we never had to do dinners or anything but I always cooked them a full English breakfast etc. In return the wife who was quite sure of her own opinions would criticise everything- the colour of our carpets. The curtains. The way I pruned my roses. That our dogs were allowed upstairs. On one occason she observed making dinner for my DCs and sniffed 'I would never allow them to get away with eating that' etc . The last time she came she said that the mattress in our spare room was getting a bit old and she would expect we would be getting a new one before next year. That's the year I grew balls and said to DH 'never again'.

They jst used us like a hotel. One year they decided they were into the raw food diet and came and dumped mountains of raw food in my kitchen sink which when I kept moving (in order to use the sink) they got annoyed about.

After some years I saw their names mentioned in the FT. They had sold their family company for literally hundreds of millions. I do honestly think that given their wealth they could have at least brought us a bottle of wine on occasion.

😮😮😮😮 What awful people !

This is the reverse as I was technically one of the house guests!

As Students after a night out, we met a group of lads (same University) and went back to their house at the end of the night.

Living in a house with all girls we were used to it being messy with clothes and bags everywhere but this place was immaculate. I cannot stress 'immaculate' enough.

It was so immaculate one of my friends refused to believe it was where they lived and started questioning them what was inside different cupboards and drawers (and opening them to check) as she was convinced no-one lived there 😲

The only other things I can remember about that night was learning 4 chords on a guitar and tearing my skirt! ☺️

My ex had his mate staying over for takeaway and to watch boxing. I woke the next morning to kebab on the carpet and a soaking wet pee covered sofa...and no sign of his friend who had slept on it!

Happyjoe · 15/09/2026 00:19

Had a few over the years - I no longer host. But my fav was my brothers friend, come home drunk as a skunk with my brother and crashed at ours. In the early hours (mum was always up at 5.30am) he sleep walked naked into the boiler cupboard and peed, presumably thinking it was a loo in his stupor. Mum just watched from the kitchen, astonished!

Yes, I love that he did that!

Elderly aunt of my husband's came to stay and after I'd washed up she rearranged all the crockery and cutlery on the rack.
Every. Single. Meal.

I don't know why. And I don't know why she didn't just dry everything up instead of moving it all around.

I rarely ever have house guests and after this weekend, I remember why!

Guest turned up Friday as planned, with their small dog.
They attended their event, said they would be back at 11.30, they arrived back at 2.30am.

Got up yesterday to find they have blocked the only toilet in the house.

Went downstairs to find dog poo on my sofas and floor, not big poos but small smears, they pretended not to notice!

They were due to leave after brunch but didn't leave til 6pm...

I don't have guests as such (unless ds leaves his well behaved dog with us) but a friend who was popping round for coffee

She had a an untrained but lovely dog (rip k) and I knew she was bringing him (all fine-he was lovely and desperate to be praised but hadnt been taught how to good)

I opened the door to be met with the most awful smell

He shot past me and started rolling around on my brand new sofa (I'd had it less than 3 hours)

'Oh don't mind him,he's been rolling around in fox shit on the walk here!'

I slung them out and started scrubbing

3 sofas later,I can still smell it (which is in my brain not the sofa)

Who does that?

Apparently she was offended I'd slung them out!

In laws 3 weeks postpartum. Plonked their sorry a on our sofa and watched TV, expected my husband to make them endless cups of tea and coffee and couldn’t even be bothered to put their mugs in the dishwasher. They didn’t help around the house at all. Thought holding my baby was ‘helping me’. Not at 3 weeks postpartum whilst I am breastfeeding pretty much non stop. MIL spieled out random outdated and frankly dangerous unwanted and unsolicited advice. I still can’t believe they treated me/us like that. Should have put a stop to visits then, stupidly let them come and stay again 3 weeks later. They were even worse. Definitely made my postpartum anxiety worse. Relationship with them since has been strained to say the least. Sorry I know you said funny 😅….

Well our CF guests are arriving this morning and staying in a hotel as DH put his foot down and refused to host them after the last two visits.

Not as deliberately bad as some on this thread, but one night the DH managed to lock our DS out of the house as the man had come back late and locked the front door. It would have been fine - DH and DS arranged that if this ever happened DS would sleep in the garage as loads of camping gear, except guest had decided to lock garage and put key inside the house, accidents happen but DS claims he heard him loudly coughing inside when he was ringing the doorbell so could have let him in. DS managed to scale the conservatory and get in to his room.

This is probably our fault for being so British, but DH had said to help himself to whiskey. He finished two £80 bottles then asked for a lift into the centre of town on a Sunday evening to buy a replacement as a gift for us. It’s a 25 minute drive each way and the shops would have been shut, but the pub he liked to play music in would of course be open. DH offered to take him to the supermarket to buy a bottle, but he declined. The DW decided to announce she wasn’t eating red meat for health reasons shortly after I put down a homemade lasagne on the table.

All this and the couple of times we have been in their neck of the woods, they couldn’t even manage to make us a meal so we went out to a diner with them.

My own mother did exactly this too - to the letter.

The worst thing is I knew she'd be like that, but let my father emotionally blackmail me into having her stay for three weeks (we lived a long way apart, unconsciously for very good reason!) because she'd have been "heartbroken" if I didn't let her "help".

Of course she went home and told absolutely everyone that I couldn't have coped without her, when in fact she made everything so much worse and harder and more fraught.

I had another baby a couple of years later and asked her to stay in a hotel with the (valid) excuse we no longer had space (though she suggested we put the oldest one in with us and give her their room - thankfully it only had a toddler bed).

It was so much easier handling a newborn and two toddlers on my own than a newborn, one toddler and my mother!

Like you our relationship was never the same - she never believed she did anything wrong and wanted me to apologise for ingratitude. I continued to visit my parents but rented a holiday home, I haven't stayed with them either since that horrible experience and never felt the same.

LarryForPrimeMinister · 15/09/2026 08:59

Had in laws come for christmas for a week.
They were staying at MILS the next street away and then just spending the days with us.
At the time I was recovering from a operation and wasn't well in myself. Well, sil rocks up and decides the cold she had made her worse and dying and everyone had to be on hand and foot for her.
She just lied around on the sofa wouldn't move so people could sit down, left her child with us all week so we had to babysit as she "couldn't possibly look after her dc", and demanded we cook dinners only she liked. On new years eve dh refused to cook dinner and said Larry is recovering from a operation, we've had your kid all week you can cook or buy everyone a takeaway as a way of thanks.
She stormed out of our house after screaming that we were terrible hosts and forgot to take her child with her. 🫥

Then wondered why when she visited after that we acted cold towards her and wouldn't look after her dc anymore.

I’m so sorry. It’s heartbreaking isn’t it, how people can treat you like that when you’re at one of your most vulnerable. There’s a LOT more to my story too which makes it even worse but that’s not a story for mumsnet! My in laws have never been confronted about it, so they live blissfully unaware at the upset and hurt it caused. My husband wont confront them and didn’t see a problem with what they did, until I mentioned it…. I suspect he still doesn’t really see the issue.
