If you could go back in time and stop one disaster or other historical event, what would it be and how would you go about stopping it!

Chernobyl

Crazycockerpoo · 12/09/2026 17:49

There's quite a few..

Dunblane was awful, those poor children's parents!

ChopSueyCharcuterieBoard · 12/09/2026 17:49

I would go back in time and stop whichever fucker who came up with the idea of religion from doing it.

Not sure how I would do it, but if I had to I would happily shove him (bound to have been a man) off a cliff or something.

Aberfan. Heartbreaking. 💔

Slavetolove3 · 12/09/2026 17:51

My marriage. Fecked up my life. All the usual world disasters too.

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 12/09/2026 17:51

Thalidomide. I'd stop it in a heart beat. Those poor babies and their families

Absolutely awful and heart-breaking. I think something like that would be a lot easier to stop than anything related to terrorism (9/11) or mens egos (Chernobyl).

Shmoigel · 12/09/2026 17:52

I think mine would be 9/11. I would warn the CIA about the entire plot. I think they had reports beforehand but I would give them the details and the repercussions. In terms of an event that made life never the same again I think its up there!

The Holocaust was my first thought. Short of killing Hitler as a baby I think it would be so hard to stop. My grandfather was one of the soldiers who liberated Belsen and he refused to discuss it. The horrors he must have seen.

Someone once said religion was invented to stop all those that have nothing from killing all those tht have everything.

Birth of Nigel Farage.

SeaToSki · 12/09/2026 18:00

For current times I’m split between 9/11 and October 7th in Israel.

For historical times, The Final Solution or the Khmer Rouge Cambodian Atrocities

I've never heard that before, but whoever said it is very wise.

Shmoigel · 12/09/2026 18:03

The Titanic would be another one that would be relatively easy to stop. All those people killed by two men and their arrogance!

This is Marxist-sounding historical speculation packaged as a clever aphorism.

I suppose I would reverse a lot of negative impact humans have had on the planet. Pollutuon of land and sea; deforestation, overfishing, over-production, mass extinction of species due to loss of habitat etc etc.

Also, AI. Get rid of it.

9/11 - the deaths of the day and in the decades after, the knock on effect of the ‘war on terror’, the Patriot Act 2001, the military overreach, the 20 year war in Afghanistan that failed, the deaths, the Weapons of Mass Destruction that never were, the deaths, the paving of the way for the post truth times …

The 'formation of Israel’ is an interesting way to say ‘I wish an entire people had never had a homeland.’ You can oppose Israeli government policies and Palestinian displacement without framing Jewish existence itself as a disaster.
