If you could go back in time and stop one disaster or other historical event, what would it be and how would you go about stopping it!

I would make sure Thomas Butler lived several more years

(it's a bit niche)

The Holocaust was my first thought. Short of killing Hitler as a baby I think it would be so hard to stop. My grandfather was one of the soldiers who liberated Belsen and he refused to discuss it. The horrors he must have seen.

My grandfather was also there and never discussed it but Nana said he would wake up screaming during the night throughout their married life.

Bogstandardname · 12/09/2026 20:16

How could you possibly choose. They are all hearbreaking

saveforthat · 12/09/2026 20:19

@Shmoigel Have you read 11:22 63 by Stephen King? Brilliant book on this theme.

The First World War .. the loss of so many especially young men

I was thinking Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s driver taking a wrong turning and giving Gavrilo Princip a second chance and managing to kill the Archduke and his wife.

But not just the loss of so many lives in that conflict but the many events that happened in the years afterwards; the domino effect.

But then I think it’s also quite likely some other event would have happened that would have been used as an excuse for plenty of other conflicts.

9/11. It would be the easiest to stop.

NoisyMonster678 · 12/09/2026 20:25

We are all personally affected by Brexit ten years on and counting. It is/was a total disaster for UK.

Other disasters were horrible, no doubt about it, but in general they didn't impact us personally really. Maybe the aftermath of some of them though.

Of course we are, and as I implied in my PP, I’m no fan of either of those things. However, we surely don’t need to be personally affected by something to be able to perceive the gravity of it? In a bit poorer because of Brexit and culturally worse off for sure, but can we compare it to the holocaust or even 9/11 for it’s immediate fatalities but also far reaching impact on American foreign policy?

Kpo58 · 12/09/2026 20:25

I would stop how various countries were divided up once the colonial powers left them. They shouldn't have been divided up within straight lines with no regards to the history/ethnicity/religions of those who lived there.

BirdLandedonmyHead · 12/09/2026 20:26

The invention of slavery. So going back several millenia.

fashionqueen0123 · 12/09/2026 20:27

9/11. So many things changed after that. I don’t think I’ve felt the same in so many places since suicide bombing became a threat.

I was watching an itv doc the other day called terror in the skies- the liquid bomb plot. And thank god that was stopped.

Aberfan. Heartbreaking. 💔

Yes this . I was 7 I remember going to my Nana's and reading the front page of her Sunday newspaper. It's an abiding childhood memory I can still see every part of her dining room as she snatched it away from me and told me it wasn't real just a story someone had made up

Nemorth · 12/09/2026 20:33

I’d stop my Mum being home alone the day she died. She wouldn’t have died if someone had been there. She was very young. As were her DC.

I would solve all of the above by stopping the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs - then humans wouldn't exist in the first place.

ingenious!

From what I understand various countries were spoiling for a fight at that point, and if it hadn't been the Archduke triggering the war it would have been something else.

The invention of slavery. So going back several millenia.

Did anyone ‘invent’ slavery?

Unexpectedlhereagain · 12/09/2026 20:38

The murder of Jews by the Nazis.

Papoy · 12/09/2026 20:40

I would pop a "family planning pill" into Donald Trump's mum !!!

Southport, which was entirely preventable, if only the authorities had actually done their job instead of pussyfooting around because "racism"😡

I would go back in time and stop whichever fucker who came up with the idea of religion from doing it.

Not sure how I would do it, but if I had to I would happily shove him (bound to have been a man) off a cliff or something.

👍👍👍
