Anyone else happy alone

We were discussing being lonely after one older ladies divorce later in life, another bereaved and a thirty something alone after a breakup.
I live with dh and it hasn't been without many issues due to being completely opposite people.
I love doing stuff alone and he isn't there for emotional stuff anyway.
The other ladies fill their time with activity and meet up with friends.
Am I the only one who loves being alone after a long day at work.?

Most of MN likes to be alone, so you are not alone.

ChocAuVin · 12/09/2026 13:10

I am joyfully alone. Well, I have two young adult DC with me plus one just off to uni, but sooo happily divorced. Will relish my own space when the kids finally fly the nest although I’m not rushing them in the current climate.

I never want to live with an adult partner again! Love my own company and being queen of my private castle.

Disturbia81 · 12/09/2026 13:12

I love it. It’s why I’ll always live alone (without another adult) I do love seeing someone but in short bursts. 😂

whatisforteamum · 12/09/2026 13:14

Chocauvin that's brilliant 😊.
Many decades ago I told my parents I had a lovely break when dh took the kids on holiday.
They thought it was a novelty.
Now I think for the most part I love being alone

I love people and spending time with them.
Home should be alone time 🤣

I’m a very happy singleton. I am twice divorced and in my sixties now. Young adult DC living fifty miles away in London, just me and my beloved pets at home.

I have never really enjoyed living with a partner, just as some people would never really enjoy living alone.

I am just so grateful to have the option, unlike many of my female ancestors.

Greenseacat · 12/09/2026 13:18

Yes. I love being alone and I find the company of other people draining (I am neurodivergent).

I need a lot of quiet time to be able to function and I am content living with my cats :).

Now that you have clarified that, YANBU.
From your OP I thought you never went anywhere or did anything with others.
I could happily live alone but would like to see others at least twice or thrice a week.

whatisforteamum · 12/09/2026 13:21

I work full-time I'm neurodivergent.
That's enough people time for me

I just wonder if it's this huge dreadful thing these other ladies feel.
Lonely with FOMO.

Advantages of living with a partner though are it's nice to have some support, another human being to turn too.
I feel safer with a partner I'm the house at night time. I have lived alone. It's nice to of your ill to have some support, someone looking out for you. Someone to cook for you etc.
I've done both and prefer living with my partner than apart.
I think it can get quite lonely on your own.

whatisforteamum · 12/09/2026 14:52

Netcurtainnelly thank you.

I live alone after divorce in 2022. I have 3 adult DDs who live away with partners and their own lives. We speak regularly and see them a few times a year. I have one or two good friends nearby and I work full time. I also lead a Guide unit. Its enough.
I love it if i have a totally free weekend and not likely to see anyone. I do some crochet, potter around my garden, read a book.
After a 30 year marriage full of abuse and financial chaos due to exH, I can honestly say it is heaven and I am counting these as my "good years" whatever my come in the future.
I can see myself getting to the point I may want to date again, but I don't think I would ever want to share my home with a man again.

GreenShady · 12/09/2026 15:07

The older I get the more I need and appreciate alone time! I quite my own company these days and when others are around I’m usually expected to be doing something like cooking or cleaning or laundry 😆

FeliciaFancybottom · 12/09/2026 15:11

Being alone and being lonely are two different things.

Oienn · 12/09/2026 15:12

I'm a sahm and I love to have time alone. I've never felt lonely or desperate for mum friends. I have a DH and enjoy spending time as a family at weekends and evenings, but it's always been important to me that I'd have school hours to myself once the dcs are at school (the youngest has just started reception) and I'm loving the freedom. For me, being alone doesn't necessarily mean sitting at home on my own, I'm often out and about exploring London, but I don't meet up with anyone or speak to a soul all day and it's great.

DinoLil · 12/09/2026 15:26

But you are not alone, are you?!

500mileslong · 12/09/2026 15:36

I think it’s different though enjoying having time alone while you still live with a partner, technically you’re not really alone are you? I enjoy time alone but I enjoy being with my dh too.

GreenShady · 12/09/2026 15:40

DinoLil · 12/09/2026 15:26

But you are not alone, are you?!

I think that’s OP’s point - she has DP in the house but prefers it when he’s not around! Therefore possibly might in fact prefer living alone.

I think it’s different when you are completely alone all the time though.

I’m not alone enough to have had enough of it yet!

feellikeanalien · 12/09/2026 15:41

I think it depends on circumstances.

I live with my young adult DD who is ND and has other physical and mental health conditions which means she will never live independently. Her Dad died six years ago.

Although I have no particular desire (or any possibility) to have another relationship it can feel very lonely.

I have to make all the decisions and have all the worry and responsibility. DD can be great company but she is very child like and sometimes I do feel very lonely. I have lovely friends and family but I don't want to constantly burden them with my problems.

I don't feel sorry for myself. I love being with DD but sometimes when I look at others I do feel a bit sad.

I am a bit like this. My life is busy and full of lovely people but I relish peace and quiet at home.

HundredMilesAnHour · 12/09/2026 15:41

There’s a BIG difference between enjoying time alone at home after work but still living with a partner compared to someone who actually LIVES alone. They are very different experiences.

Mairzydotes · 12/09/2026 16:08

DinoLil · 12/09/2026 15:26

But you are not alone, are you?!

That's why she cherishes the time she gets when she isn't with other people.

whatisforteamum · 12/09/2026 16:43

I have considered being alone so has he briefly.
I think I'm unconventional in that I'm not a party going sociable person and I love working.
