60th birthday ideas for Mum

I have the most amazing mum who turns 60 at the end of the month. I already have a few ideas but would love to hear of anything special you’ve gifted/done for your mums big birthdays or have received from your daughters. Any budgets considered, if I could I’d give her the world as that’s what she deserves!

I just did a handmade cake at home and an afternoon tea, but that was my mum.

What does she like op? Would she love a party? Just her close family and a meal?

Deadringer · 11/09/2026 18:32

I am that age and the best thing my dds could do is bring me away on a trip, one night in a hotel, a weekend city break, or even a week abroad, depending on budget. Failing that a nice meal somewhere. I am not into 'stuff' but I love spending time with my dc.

ScaramoucheCanYouDoTheFandango · 11/09/2026 18:36

I am 58, and agree with @Deadringer . I don’t need things, I buy anything I want.

Good company and a lovely meal out, for me a nice steak, or maybe lobster, would be perfect.

How about an afternoon tea party with all your family and her friends.

RaininSummer · 11/09/2026 18:40

My girls took me to Abba Voyage and a lovely Indian meal.

cityliving99 · 11/09/2026 18:43

My daughters bought me a weekend stay in London with afternoon tea at The Ritz….
i am going near Christmas, to experience the Ritz in all its glory!

Aquasoap · 11/09/2026 18:44

Just a copy of your post in a frame would do me!

Perhaps a nice photo of you both in a lovely frame.

TeenToTwenties · 11/09/2026 18:47

I'm nearly there. I'd like an afternoon tea.

Mumteedum · 11/09/2026 18:51

Aw what a lovely post.

I'm a bit younger than your mum and have some health issues so big events aren't possible, but I had a beautiful birthday recently. Just me and my lovely son, with a little trip out to do something together, some flowers and a lovely card with a message.

Trying to imagine future stuff but it really depends what your mum is like and what she likes. A beautiful potted rose or acer would be something I'd like. My friend would love theatre tickets. My own Mum likes a big bouquet and a meal out

CillianMurphyhasbeautifuleyes · 11/09/2026 18:54

I commissioned a painting of a photo of my mum as a teenager, for her 60th birthday.
She absolutely LOVED it and it has pride of place in her living room.

twocornichons · 11/09/2026 18:57

The first sentence of your post would be the most amazing present ! Just knowing that is everything.. !

CadiFfan · 11/09/2026 18:59

My mum died a few weeks before her 60th.

just spend time with her. No need to be materialistic

Pedant61 · 11/09/2026 19:04

I am 60+ and, frankly, I ignored my 60th birthday as a lot of unnecessary nonsense.
However, and if you're absolutely sure your mother would appreciate a fuss....

  1. You know her best, so you know what she would like - she might like a tea party with friends and family (I would loathe it).
  2. Or, in general, most 60-something women I know definitely don't want more stuff/ a party/ a huge surprise / some stereotypical "old lady shit". My suggestions would therefore be theatre tickets, a gallery annual membership, or promise of a weekend away. It could be something you might do together, and you can enjoy the next few months planning it between you. It is absolutely not necessary to do anything "on the day".
Deadringer · 11/09/2026 19:12

And after the meal/holiday, a photo or photo book with pictures of us together would be a lovely follow up gift.

MyOliveViewer · 11/09/2026 19:15

I’m nearly there too, a meal, trip to the theatre or night away. Or something like afternoon tea at posh National trust type of place. No presents except for luxury chocolates.

FIFIBEBE · 11/09/2026 19:19

I’m 60 next year and I want experiences with people not stuff (unless it’s an expensive watch), could be a lunch out or a week away, don’t care just good times with people I love.

PenelopeAsks · 11/09/2026 19:19

Nothing twee. We are the generation of rave, Brit pop and grunge.
Have a brilliant event with friends and family. Buy a piece of jewellery if you can afford it but mainly have fun.

FelixDoublyDelicious · 11/09/2026 19:26

I was 60 this year and have had multiple weekends away, ABBA Voyage, bottomless brunches and have another short break booked in Spain in November, plus more next year to make a year of 60.
Just a lot of fun
I may be 60, but I am not ready for any old lady stuff at all and I have saved for this, I am by no means rich

ghostyslovesheets · 11/09/2026 19:30

I’m 56, I agree with other posters here, I don’t need anything - I can buy my own stuff.

what I appreciate is a little effort, cards - I love a well thought out card and a nice message, also maybe a meal out or few drinks - giving me their time and thought means a lot.

5289843DM · 11/09/2026 19:34

I think it was her 65th, but I took my mum on a surprise steam train journey.

I'd suggest doing an activity with her, rather than buying more 'stuff'. What is she into?
-cooking class together, yo sushi do sushi making lessons, a BBQ cooking class, fish boning/veggie cooking?
-cocktail lesson
-If she is into museums/history then visit a town with a museum she hasn't been to or tickets to see the Bayeux tapestry.

hourspassed · 11/09/2026 19:35

I'll be 60 in a years time and all I want for my birthdays and Christmases every year is to spend time with my DCs and DGCs. No present is ever as good as doing something with them.

Watching them all together, laughing and joking and sharing food and family stories is the most precious of gifts.

Cook for her, book a spa day or take her on holiday. You sound like a lovely daughter. I hope you have an amazing time with your Mum whatever you decide to do.

birdinatree1903 · 11/09/2026 19:56

Wow, I wasn’t expecting so many kind and thoughtful responses, thank you all so much for your ideas! I’ll definitely consider all of them.
So far I had thought I might make a little book ‘60 reasons I’m so glad you’re my mum’ with everything I love about her and our relationship, with nice words, memories and photos in it. Then I was also going to gift her a voucher for a holiday or some kind of break with my dad, a kind of joint gift to them both as he turns 60 next year. Plus maybe a nice meal/experience for the two of us and some quality time with my two DDs who she adores. She’s not one for big parties or fuss, and personal circumstances means birthdays can feel heavy for her, but I really want to make this one special for her. Again, I really appreciate everyone’s thoughts! Thank you ☺️

When my Mum was 70 we took her to the Ritz for afternoon tea, and bought her the Ritz birthday cake! We took her into Harrods (she had never been) and got her treats from the food hall (which is what she wanted). The next day all went out for Sunday lunch, with her and her 2 closest friends.

She said afterwards that she had a lovely time.

As a mum whose next big birthday is 60 I would be happy with whatever you did - as long as there was an opportunity to spend time with you and the family (and have a glass of wine!) xx

farmlass · 11/09/2026 21:25

My lovely DD took me to see a musical we both wanted to see in another town for my birthday.

Aftetnoon tea, show and night away ,
very generous but we’ve recently done a lot of DIY and house stuff for them so it was a real treat .
