To tip or not to tip in beauty salons?

New to this - tipping in beauty salons. Do you? I had my first ever eyebrow wax today £18. I think the salon owner did it. Very pleased with it - didn’t tip as I don’t tip, for example, my hairdresser, but that’s £120 a time every few months.
Is it bad etiquette not to tip in a beauty salon?

I don’t tip, they are at work doing their job like the rest of us.

Crushed23 · 11/09/2026 13:15

Nope, I never tip in the UK.

If a service charge is added (e.g. in restaurants), I’ll pay, but no tipping on top.

Screamingabdabz · 11/09/2026 13:15

Nooooo. Don’t feed into this ridiculous tipping culture. We have minimum wage and where does it end? Just no.

My thoughts exactly.

It’s just when the tip option flashes up with suggested amounts when paying that makes me think ‘is this what I should do be doing’, for a minute & feel mean pressing ‘no’ 🤪 (but obviously not mean enough to press ‘yes’ 😅)

I tip in massage places if it’s been exceptional
but I don’t tip my nail salon or Botox or anything like that

pilates · 11/09/2026 13:24

No

purplecorkheart · 11/09/2026 13:25

No I don't normally tip unless it is for a pedicure. I hate my feet and feet in general so feel sorry for the person doing the pedicure!

ItsStillWork · 11/09/2026 13:27

The only people I tip are takeaway delivery drivers as there is usually no delivery fee.

When did this become a thing? I absolutely wouldn't tip a penny.

I tip my nail person and my hairdresser. Maybe it’s a location thing. Everyone where I am from does (north of England). My nan used to 30 years ago, so it’s not recent. I also tip cab drivers, bar staff and restaurants but usually just by rounding up rather than a %

AhMh67 · 11/09/2026 16:39

the prices your paying wow. My eyebrow wax is 6 pounds.
cut and blow dry 20 pounds. Not a chance I would tip with the prices your paying.

Moellen54 · 11/09/2026 17:00

My hair trim is £23 so I give her £25 cash

AxolotlEars · 11/09/2026 17:22

Nope

I always tip my nail technician and hairdresser, always have done. And a small gift at Christmas.
I think it’s a hangover from when traditionally staff received pretty low wages. I do think it impacts the service you get, my hairdresser doesn’t charge me the rare times I’ve missed an appointment and will always squeeze me in if I need an appointment urgently. It creates goodwill.

LondonLass2026 · 11/09/2026 17:34

Yes, always. I am in the north east of England, but I also always tipped in my hometown of London.

WecanbeheroeslikeBowie · 11/09/2026 17:49

Tipping can ALWAYS jog off. Don't ask me and you won't be offended.

isitfridayyetttt · 11/09/2026 17:52

I probably wouldn’t tip if it was the owner. I do tip otherwise though.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 11/09/2026 18:38

At one hairdressers I used to go to.. They had someone who washed the hair, a colourist who did the highlights and the owner used to cut ... They made it very clear that I was supposed to tip each of them. As the haircut and highlights at the time very expensive I felt this was a lot. It was all a bit awkward, how much for each, should there be a differential, I'd so much rather they just added a service charge at the bill paying time, at least you'd know where you were.

sunflower85 · 11/09/2026 18:42

No, I don’t tip for anything.

xGoGox · 11/09/2026 18:44

i don’t tip and that includes restaurants - I’m neither in US nor ancient

IwanttoWFH · 11/09/2026 18:58

The only person I tip is my waxing lady, but that’s purely because I am scared of her (and she adds the discretionary tip onto the card reader). I daren’t press “no”. Plus, I wouldn’t fancy touching someone’s nether regions, so I think she deserves it.

I don’t tip anyone else. I’m paying for a service which isn’t cheap.

morgan56 · 11/09/2026 19:02

Had my nails done the other day. £38. Both ladies before me rounded up to £40. I needed the change so didn’t tip. They HATED me.

This.

Bananacrepewithnuts · 11/09/2026 21:55

I used to tip everywhere until my work colleague said she never tips and explained that's the price they've set. That's what you pay. Why would you pay more.
So it got me thinking and now I have taken the first step and don't tip at the nail salon.

I'm worried about not tipping at the hair salon though. I used to tip well and it will be really noticeable if I stop. And they might talk about me after I leave. So I'm still plucking up courage on that one.

I do tip taxi drivers and food delivery too.
God I'm bloody generous - I just realised that.
😂

JoyChansey · 11/09/2026 23:28

I would just give a £20 note and tell them to keep the change.
