To tip or not to tip in beauty salons?

New to this - tipping in beauty salons. Do you? I had my first ever eyebrow wax today £18. I think the salon owner did it. Very pleased with it - didn’t tip as I don’t tip, for example, my hairdresser, but that’s £120 a time every few months.
Is it bad etiquette not to tip in a beauty salon?

I would just give a £20 note and tell them to keep the change.

What about when you pay by card though? I take some cash to give a tip.

Nope. Won’t tip. They set their prices 💁🏼

I don’t tip the Asda check out person so why would I tip my hair dresser?

I tip my hairdresser when we are doing my foils, as it’s a big job and I want to show appreciation. For my usual cut and blowdry I don’t tip as it’s already £65 and doesn’t take very long.
i tip my nail tech as she comes to my house and doesn’t charge anything extra to do so, so it seems the least I can do!
I also get them Xmas gifts as a token of appreciation. Am never really sure on tipping culture so I hope the above is ok 😊

That's fair enough.

I rather pay cash in small, independent businesses (taxis, car washes, local cafes, etc), as it avoid bank charges for them.

It doesn't bother me to go to a cashpoint every once in a while to take it out as I'll need cash for other things, such as the occasional charitable donation, market stalls I sometimes buy from, a banknote placed in a child's birthday card, etc.

No. I don't tip the bus driver, checkout person at the supermarket or anywhere else I exchange money for a good service. Why would a salon be any different?

I hear you it's a really weird concept when you break down who we tip?

I always tip my nail technician and hairdresser, always have done. And a small gift at Christmas.
I think it’s a hangover from when traditionally staff received pretty low wages. I do think it impacts the service you get, my hairdresser doesn’t charge me the rare times I’ve missed an appointment and will always squeeze me in if I need an appointment urgently. It creates goodwill.

I don’t do tips but for example hairdresser would have a xmas present or if i am ever booked first thing in the morning. I bring pastries to share. Same for cleaner, no tips but when she cleans whilst on holiday i would leave her a bottle of something or chocolates

GoodLife26 · 12/09/2026 11:37

I never tip. The service or treatment is priced as X and that is what I pay.

Mirrorlolo · 12/09/2026 12:04

Yes I tip a tenner. time to my beautician and hairdresser and usually 3 for a mani or pedi 5 if it's both

Appleaid · 13/09/2026 00:13

I haven’t tipped since Covid when contactless payment became the preferred method. I rarely carry cash. Also, I now pay upfront on an app when I book, so there isn’t even a transaction at the salon anymore.

tipping (for me anyway) is usually when it’s a personal, 121 service. Hairdresser, cab driver, nail salon, bar staff, waiter, beautician. Nails are £38, I give £40 cash and so on.

CalamityLane · 13/09/2026 14:18

Yes, I aways do to staff in hairdressers and the beauty salon. I consciously make sure I have change before I go. However if on the odd occassion the salon owner does my treatment I do not tip her..

Im in Ireland

I've always tipped my hairdresser until the last time I went as I had no cash. I don't carry cash routinely so I think tipping will fade away.

No, I don’t understand why we have to tip them. I don’t tip at restaurants too….
