What snacks are you taking to/buying at the cinema?

I'm taking myself to the cinema tomorrow night (to see The Incomer, if any one is interested).

My go to cinema snack is a big bag of Maltesers, that I'll buy at Tesco beforehand to avoid the cinema pricing. I've been known to buy an IceBlast (blue flavour), if I'm feeling wild.

Nachos with cheese dip are delicious also, but a rare purchase for me. Popcorn isn't for me; just gets stuck in my teeth.

I've seen things online that some folks buy hot food and take it in. A Nandos wrap, or a full McDs meal, for example.

I've even seen videos of people having a cinema charcuterie board via M&S picky food.

Have any of you experienced such flamboyance? Perhaps I'm not making the most of my alone time at the cinema! I'm open to suggestion if someone has a wonderful recommendation for me.

A hot drink at the cinema? You've blown my mind @Backedoffhackedoff

To me, cinema = cold drink. I'd absolutely have an iced coffee but I've never considered a hot cuppa. I shall take this into consideration....

Love a solo cinema trip.

I think a charcuterie board or a load of M&S bits would just be a) fiddly and messy to eat in a cinema seat and b) potentially quite annoying for other people, so that seems a bit excessive to me. Weirdly, a McDonald's burger actually seems less intrusive!

For me, the key things for cinema food are that they actually last you for a good chunk of the film (so a burger wouldn't work for me), and also make me feel like I'm very specifically at the cinema, eating crap I wouldn't eat at home. So for me it's popcorn (sweet and salty mixed, please) and/or pick'n'mix, although a decent amount of pick'n'mix in a cinema now costs approximately seventy-five thousand pounds, so I'd probably bring my own. Or maybe something like Haribo, or wine gums, or boiled sweets of some kind. Drink is a Diet Coke or a blue Ice Blast.

Controversially, when working very hard to lose weight and not wanting to consume enough calories during one film to fuel a small country, I once bought a large punnet of grapes at the supermarket and took those in. Weirdly, they were actually a really good cinema snack.

There's an arthouse cinema in my home city where you can take in drinks from the bar and also buy slices of cake to take in, which is always enjoyable.

MinnieMountain · 10/09/2026 15:25

I've been known to bring picnic food from M&S if I'm going around lunchtime.

My usual is Haribo jelly babies. Or Tesco popcorn.

MinnieMountain · 10/09/2026 15:26

Grapes is an excellent idea @AbsintheMakesTheHeartGrowFonder.

Yiayoula · 10/09/2026 15:26

The prices in our nearest cinema ( Vue ) are
eye-watering, so always take a few snacks from home.
Typically a bag of mini cheddars from a multipack, grapes in a small plastic tub, and a can of diet lemonade. Maybe a banana too, if it’s a long film like The Odyssey !

Yes, I agree that the movie time: snack ratio absolutely has to be taken into consideration. Hence the massive share bag of Maltesers 😉

Your mention of grapes has jogged a long-lost memory that in my strict diet days, I once went to the cinema with a sandwich bag full of frozen grapes, rolled in sugar-free jelly powder. Apparently it was practically calorie free and very delicious. I think I remember it being quite tasty but I definitley remember that it was a) very rustly - sandwich bag was not a good recepticle choice and b) sticky!

I bring a microwave popped bag of sweet and salty popcorn then buy a coffee, the latter has been a gamechanger in helping me to stay awake, I'm terrible for snoozing no matter how good the film. Grapes are a good idea. I'm also partial to Minstrels.

thepollyanna · 10/09/2026 15:56

I’m guessing you are not yet 55? Everyman do a Silver Screen cheapo ticket with FREE drink and cake at your sofa/squishy armchair. Something for the years ahead maybe?

Pedant61 · 10/09/2026 15:59

None. Eating at the cinema is a horrible habit, and completely unnecessary. Just eat before you go.

luckylavender · 10/09/2026 16:27

Nothing. Nobody needs to eat at the cinema and it's mega distracting.

FionnulaTheCooler · 10/09/2026 16:32

My cinema is near a B&M so we normally nip in and get one of these (between 3 of us) and a can of juice each.

bababamama · 10/09/2026 16:34

haribo, or rather the knock off version from Lidl, mistrels and fruit pastels again Lidl version

purplecorkheart · 10/09/2026 16:39

Normally just bring a bottle of water (bought elsewhere). Not a fan of popcorn. I tend to go to the first (very very cheap screening) at our cinema so there are no other savory options

Summerishere123 · 10/09/2026 18:15

If I am going around lunch time I take a meal deal from the supermarket as it lasts longer and I could easily eat my weight in sweets. I have also taken chopped fruit before with a small bag of m&ms mixed in so I don't FOMO.

EmmaB1309 · 10/09/2026 18:59

I’m partial to a pick and mix. Or a a bag of some kind of chocolate- m&ms or revels. I like that thing of them putting m&ms in popcorn. Not hot food for me.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 10/09/2026 19:18

This is the main reason I never go to the cinema - people munching constantly for hours. I once went to an 11.30pm screening, thinking “this is way past anyone’s mealtime”. Obviously I was wrong.

Backedoffhackedoff · 10/09/2026 19:21

People don’t eat at the cinema for a meal, you absolute loon 🤣

TheChosenTwo · 10/09/2026 19:23

I go to the cinema about once a year if that (I fall asleep during films every time, it’s closer to once every 3 years really!), I will always splash out on cinema snacks - pick’n’mix and salty popcorn with a big bottle of water. Yum!

I am but there are about 10 other cinemas much closer than the nearest one so I've never been, too far to be worth it.

Sneak some wine in.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 10/09/2026 20:26

I've had a coffee or tea before now, and I usually take water, but I don't eat in the cinema 🤷🏻 the last time I went, a guy next to me crunched and rustled his way through several big share sized packets of crisps. Don't care what he eats, but he was bloody noisy 😡
