Does anyone else find the rain calming?

Since I was a small child I have adored the rain, absolutely loved it.

I have no idea exactly why but it makes me feel so very happy. Since I was young I have suffered from anxiety and for some reason rain never fails to ground me.

I have had a really rough year and summer was particularly tough, the heatwaves left me feeling physically and mentally unwell. Today I have woken up to rain, proper rain not drizzle and I’m feeling so calm and upbeat. I laid in bed for a while hearing it tapping against my bedroom window and I felt so cosy (I usually wake up with high anxiety so this was a treat for me). Weird, I know but I’ve just stood outside in the cool driving rain and felt almost euphoric. I’m hoping to be able to drag the dog out soon on a lovely wet walk around the fields (not sure he’s going to be too impressed though).

Autumn is my favourite month and I hope there will be many more rainy days to come.

I’m weird, I know but does anyone else feel like this?

I love being in the house with windows open listening to it when it’s heavy. I find that very relaxing.
Being out in it, not so much!

My very favourite piece of music is Chopin's Raindrop Prelude. The gives me such a feeling of absolute relaxation and pleasure.

I like the rain and walking in it and seeing the reviving effect it has on my garden , but not when it's accompanied by high winds. I find strong winds quite frightening and disturbing .

One of the greatest sounds ever (to my mind) is monsoon rain on a tin roof. Obviously we don’t get that in the UK but any heavy rain is glorious.

And yes, few things are more satisfying than striding out, well protected by waterproof clothes and wellies, into drenching rain.

Not calming, but definitely life enhancing!

I do enjoy being all cosy inside when it's raining outside. You can't do anything but sit back and relax. Obviously if you have to go out it's a real pain in the arse.

No, generally I don't find rain calming, but I find rain AT THE MOMENT calming, because I was worried about the lack of it before. So the fact that it is now finally raining again, albeit very little where I live in the south, is a relief. For weeks all the rain seemed to fall across Scotland and the north of England and the south remained bone dry and that made me feel really anxious!

Touty · 08/09/2026 08:43

Yes I like it, find it soothing

terrifiedgran · 08/09/2026 08:45

I love rain. Especially being out in it. Which is good since I work outside, but if it rains in the evening and I've missed it, I usually go out for a walk. Everyone else I work with thinks I'm crazy.

I wouldn't say it's calming though, I'm not really an anxious person, I just really like the sensation (as long as it's not too cold). The really odd thing is that I hate showers (they make me very cross), so almost always have baths!

JacknDiane · 08/09/2026 08:48

I agree @UnitaBath

Nightnova · 08/09/2026 08:52

When I'm in the house I don't mind rain. Unfortunately I can't lie in bed listening to it and have to go out to the bus stop to get to work. Then I don't like it so much.

Ilovemyshed · 08/09/2026 08:53

Its a wonderful sound, especially after such a dry summer. I love the pitter patter of rain on a tent roof too when all snuggled up in bed.

frozendaisy · 08/09/2026 08:59

The rain alters the charge of the air, which creates a calming effect.

And humans particularly sensitive to the petrichor smell.

Rain is wonderful if you can enjoy it but not everyone has that choice available to them.

Wellwellwellwhatsallthisthen · 08/09/2026 09:22

Yes, I wish it was always raining whenever I'm indoors. I absolutely love it. I don't really like being out in it though and the faff of umbrellas and shoes getting wet etc.

DurhamDime · 08/09/2026 09:24

Yep. I’m in the conservatory at the moment. Love it.

Florally · 08/09/2026 09:26

I love it so much. I think I have the opposite seasonal affective disorder. This weather makes me so happy.

Chocolatecustardcreamsrule · 08/09/2026 09:29

I love the rain. Being inside all cosy at night listening to it is so relaxing. I also like putting on some waterproofs and going for a walk in it, the water dripping off all of the trees and the puddles having all the little splashes.

Me too. Love the sound of it in mine too.
Very glad to see it at the moment, feels like the first proper amount of rain for months here in Hampshire.

Myremoteislost · 08/09/2026 09:40

I don't mind it when I'm in all day. I don't like being out in it though and it's so inconvenient for the DCs going to school. No matter what they wear they end up spending the day soaked.

HoppityBun · 08/09/2026 09:42

Yes definitely I do. Lots of people do, that’s why the sound of rain is put on sleep and meditation tracks

Fancynoice · 08/09/2026 09:51

If I see it dribble down the window it makes me feel instantly nauseous, because it reminds me of those long car journeys when I was a child with severe travel sickness, the ones where the only thing you could do was rest your forehead on the cold window of the car because you were squished in the back with your siblings, with an ice cream pot on your lap.

HussleMe · 08/09/2026 09:52

I sit in bed with the French doors wide open when it pours. It’s beautiful.

Rubyupbeat · 08/09/2026 10:05

I am the same. I love being in the motorhome when its pouring down, its so cosy curled up with my kindle.

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 08/09/2026 10:09

As long as I’m inside, it’s fine.

However I work outdoors all year round, and often wish it would bugger off, especially in winter when it’s blowing horizontally into my eyeballs.

Oh, I love a shower, I have an above bath shower and I sit in the bath and let the shower pour over me for ages, love that feeling ☺️

But that’s not just what OP is saying. She enjoys being out walking about in it. That’s the part that’s probably much less common

Netcurtainnelly · 08/09/2026 10:12

No I hate it, but we need it.
