Stomach pain after Costa coffee

Bought a takeaway coffee from Costa in Wimbledon today - first time in ages. I am still suffering the consequences with a griping stomach pain which started shortly after and has been going on now for 8 hours Anyone else had this? It's put me off getting coffees again, which are more expensive now anyway...

Out of interest, which Costa did you use? (I live in Wimbledon)

Costa never seem to clean out milk jugs, endlessly pouring and reheating. Similarly the milk wands are crusty often.

Was it a milky coffee?

Different roasts of the coffee beans can produce more ,or less acid,and affect your stomach,especially if it's pretty empty. I've had it happen to me and it took me a while to make the connection.

Maybe ask them if all their beans are just one type,roasted the same way. If you go back,that is. I don't think it's their fault,as such.

Yes, it was a large cafe latte. That might explain it if they're bad at cleaning out milk jugs..

A big intake of milk used to make me ill. Swapped to oat milk now. Problem solved.

There was something in the press a couple of weeks ago about how Costa coffees have way more caffeine than rivals. It mentioned cappuccinos in particular but I think the same applied to lattes. Not sure if that would have an impact per se but definitely shows there’s something different about their coffee compared to other chains.

I have Costa coffees regularly in several different branches and have never had a problem.

Caffeine stimulates the bowel and if you aren't a regular coffee drinker and have a strong coffee it could easily cause cramps. Anecdotally, I feel like costa coffees are quite strong.

Hmm..that could be it possibly. I do drink coffee at home but it's generally weaker. I haven't had cafe coffee for quite a while.

Costa coffee has been known to give me the raging shits on a few occasions, not always but sometimes. I put it down to the coffee being very strong but reading some of the comments about milk jugs etc, could be that. Prefer Starbucks anyway.

Me too. I actually vomited last time I had one. I don't have a problem with any other coffee, so it's definitely a Costa problem.

Not just me then! I always avoid Costa, something about their coffee makes me nauseous. Nero is the best IMO

Yes! Cramping and bloating. I didn’t connect it to the coffees snd thought it was just me but it doesn’t happen after any coffee from an independent coffee shop.

Milky drinks make me feel queasy, maybe a lactose overload?

Also vaguely remember being in agony with stomach cramps/bloating after having 2 milkshakes on holiday (best milkshakes ever!).

I don't usually react to lactose but think that was just too much at once with me not being a baby bovine.

Costa make terrible coffee in my opinion. Their flat white is basically a bucket of hot milk with essence of coffee. Hope your tummy is better!

It is more likely to be the caffeine intake over the milk jugs. Costa and Starbucks use different beans and there’s around 4 times more caffeine in Costa beans than there is in Starbucks beans

A large costa latte has 3 or 4 shots of coffee in. So probably got the bowels going

The large coffees have a lot of caffeine in them. No wonder your bowels were in knots.

As PP said Costa has a lot more caffeine than a lot of other brands, it was about 3 times more than many.

Me too, I was always queasy afterwards, every single time. I have stopped using all those chain coffee places now.

I have noticed Costa can be quite grubby looking also

As a pp said, coffee can stimulate your bowel. It can make you poo, so it could be that.

I’ve never had a problem with Costa though.
