What a legacy she leaves. She really changed the thinking around so many issues affecting women.

I just read that piece. My teenager just said something along the lines of "someone else people my age are going to learn to appreciate now they're dead."

I knew discovered her off the back to the tv show on the BBC a few years ago called Mrs. America.
It was about feminist activism (and female opposition to feminism) in the 1970s. Really good watch.
Been following her since. I used to read Mizz magazine as a kid, which was her (feminist) magazine and loved it. She was a wonder.
I think back to that tv show quite a lot, the subject really plays on my mind.

She wasn’t IN the TV show. It was about a part of her life.

Gloria Steinhem was absolutely pivotal to modern feminism and has been a vital, brave voice on women's issues for decades.

Hopefully, the coverage of her life following her death will help anyone unfamiliar with her work understand why she was so important in her generation.

Rose Byrne as Gloria Steinem was great casting in Mrs. America, imo.

One of the titans of the women's movement, and a life to be feted.

Also Cassandra Wilson, whose music I particularly love, and who has been taken at only 70.

Really did more for women than Dolly Parton, although comparisons are odious. But if you don't know her you should look into her and probably a few other things, because to me the idea that the whole world knew Dolly - who was fabulous- but there's a whole tranche of women who don't know GS, is not a good, balanced view of modern women's history.
Sorry if I sound a bit stuffy. But your rights were won more by Gloria than by Dolly.

I liked Dolly but I tend to agree. This thread has had no traction at all. I thought there would be a big thread in active and at least one in the feminism board.

My mum was American (don't like using past tense but she died last year aged 85). Gloria Steinem was iconic to her generation of American women and I know of Steinem specifically as my mother's daughter. But she shouldn't be consigned to obscurity, She was a trailblazer. (GS that is not my DM - but her too).

One of her cover stories on sexual harassment in the workplace in Ms. led to the film 9 - 5, starring Dolly. Didn't know that one.

Possibly, but I'm in my 40's. I've had a WhatsApp message from my 38 year old cousin, just linking that Guardian headline.

Is it a symptom of the idea that feminism has been 'done' and we don't fight that fight anymore? I couldn't tell you when I first learned about GS, I guess in my 20's.

Yes, it's sad and very telling that younger (I assume) women haven't heard of her. I'm American and a second wave feminist; her work was a heavy influence on my thinking and still is.
