Do you wash your mop?

I have started to wonder if ppl wash the mop heads after use? I lent my neighbour our mop and was actually embarrassed when I handed it over - it looked far greyer than I realised. I can be quite anxious and now sat wondering if ppl actually rinse it out or even wash mop heads? Or change them after each use? I try to use my ones more than 3 times, even if they look a little grey as I don't like waste, but am I being a filthy ho-bag? Will the neighbour call me slovenly? (Lighthearted).

Yes the mop head gets thrown in the washing machine with all the other cleaning cloths. What’s the point of washing the floor with a dirty mop?

TerfOnATrain · 30/08/2026 20:03

I unscrew the head periodically and throw the head in the washing machine.

See, imagining a bucket of bleach overnight is making me feel itchy about what I would then use the bucket of bleach for.
I do not like waste as I said, so I guess you could then chuck it in the loo and leave for a clean loo to "double dip" if you'll excuse the pun?

I do that or wash the outside drain with it

Zoflora soak periodically and occasional trip to the washing machine

Mum2Fergus · 30/08/2026 20:34

Yes, it gets thrown in washing machine along with any other cleaning things that need doing.

EmailsaysOOO · 30/08/2026 20:34

I bleach it, maybe every 3 or 4 times it's been round the kitchen and bathroom.

My mum told me recently I should be washing my mops. I didn't k ow that and had always just turned them upside down to dry and replaced them ever so often. I'm 46 🫪

But.......when I wash the mops in the washing machine, anything in with the mop (dish towels and clothes and so on) smells like floor cleaner......

I need to go to mop school.

This is the wrong place to say that sometimes I put bleach in the loo, hold the mop in, and flush, isn’t it? 😬

No

Sort of....

I use a squirt of bleach in the mop water as well as detergent (as I was taught as a hospital cleaner 30 years ago!) so the head is disinfected every time I use it.

After each use I unscrew it, rinse it under a spray-head tap combing with my fingers to pull out any hairs, then leave it to dry.

Never goes smelly. Goes a bit grey over time.

I thought you had to be really careful about mixing bleach with any other detergent to avoid chlorine gas poisoning (and yes, I do know someone who was lucky to survive that, although that wasn't mixing with detergent, just a rather daft, unthinking episode with hot tub chlorine tablets.)

That's toilet cleaner. A squirt of bleach with a splash of basic detergent in a big bucket of water is fine.

I clean mine in bleach and very hot water after every use.

Keeps the head lovely and white. 👍

I have silicone head loo brushes and often leave one in the loo with a splash of bleach overnight . I do put the bathroom/ toilet bin on the lid so anyone going for a nocturnal pee in the dark doesn't sit without due care and attention 😵‍💫
