Do you use AI?

Thought it might be interesting to chat about how people are using AI….

I am encouraged to use a specific AI programme at work that is specific to my sector, but I find it to be quite inaccurate and I haven’t found a way to use it that I am confident with.

I used Chat GPE to make our holiday itinerary into quite a cool poster and I’ve just asked Claude to build an itinerary for our Xmas holiday - the first attempt is pretty much the same as the itinerary it took me about 2 weeks to come up with.

Interested to know how others are using AI and what works/doesn’t work?

Poster A: outlines all of the many ethical issues with AI

Poster B: look at my lovely roast chicken!

Yep all the time. It's better than straight Googling (I know it's the same company) as it gives different insights and pulls everything together in a way Google doesn't.

I use it for deeper diving into my health issues, without relying on it 100%, and it's never been wrong.

I've used it to help redesign my house (nothing major, mostly how to declutter and rearrange, which is SO helpful). I take a pic of the room and it tells me where to move what, and it mocks up ideas. Google can't do that.

It's given me a fab set of back and stretching exercises.

When at restaurants, I take a photo of the menu and ask Ai which is the lowest fat option.

I always seem to have laptop and TV connection / other error issues, and showing Ai a photo, it's always able to tell me what to do. When my partner isn't home, this is absolute gold for me.

More randomly..

Some fighter jets flew over the Bon Jovi gig I was at last night, and Ai told me why this was.

When selling a day bed recently, I didn't have time to clear the area around the bed (it's a spare bedroom), nor make the bed, and Ai completely cleared it all.

I want to sell again on ebay, and asked Ai the best ways to go about it, what sells well, etc. I even asked how hard it is to get a pop up shop. Explained it all for me.

AI made your bed??

No, it's trashing the planet and our brains.

This.

It is awful at most things and nobody needs a fucking graphic itinerary of a city break or Xmas, FFS.

You’re deliberately boiling the pan (planet) dry.

Have you donated your brain to medical science before it becomes a lump of useless cells?

I do wonder has anyone who uses ‘AI’ regularly actually used it to look into the ethical clusterfuck that is AI (in all its facets).

It’s all been said upthread but no one is actually engaging with any of it - environmental (water, land), ethical (content theft, how LLMs are trained), business model (drug dealer hook is an excellent analogy).

I work in tech and while I do use it, I try to use it as ethically as I can (i.e. for things that would take me days to do myself when I’m pressed for time), and even then it makes me feel like I’m in need of a shower, because really, is me being busy a decent enough excuse?!

So to hear some people are using it to just ‘chat to’ is fucking horrifying. I know it’s being used like that but it’s like watching the start of a disaster movie.

I’m glad some people are posting that millennials and Gen Z are starting to balk against it - they should…the only people who end up better off in this scenario are the tech giants…and they are some scary despots. Ask yourself why you would want to give those guys any more power than they already have to speed up fucking our planet up, and putting entire industries out of business (think that’s far fetched? Look at the graduate job market) We have to collectively wake up…

I usually use emojis when I’m out of words but I don’t even think I have emojis to cover how depressing this thread is.

I do get the concerns about the environment. But I don't really understand the difference your making between using it for work and using it to chat. Using it for work doesn't remove the environmental impact.

For some people chatting to AI does haveva purpose. Some people are isolated and have no support. Or can go a long time without talking to someone obviously AI isn't real but people can still say things out loud and make sense of their feelings. I know it sounds very odd but it helped me not to do something stupid.

If it helps somone feel less alone or struggling i don't think it a less worthwhile use than it being used at work.
