I’m a mosquito magnet! Help!

Mydietstartstomorrow · 29/08/2026 09:47

I’m getting eaten alive this year by mosquitoes particularly IN MY OWN HOUSE!! I’ve got fans on, a blue light thingy and spray myself with lemon oil and they still get me during the night! I’ve tried the bracelets they didn’t work!
I’m going on holiday in a few weeks and am worried I’m going to be a feast!
I never used to have this problem it only started a couple of years ago and I’m convinced it’s down to the HRT!

Me too. I actually almost convinced myself I have bedbugs (I don't, checked everything for hours with a magnifying glass) because the mosquito bites are so bad. Do you know your blood type? I'm convinced it's linked to that.

the only thing I've found that helps is sleeping with my same blood type but younger and sweeter 5 year old in the same room 😂 but that's not really fair on him.

PlumPlumb · 29/08/2026 13:51

Odomos cream applied liberally

A fan running as well - they aren't strong fliers and don't like breezes

Keep windows shut

Definitely mosquitos not midges?

FoundAUserNameDownTheSofa · 29/08/2026 13:52

Is it also your reaction to bites? I’ve got a bite at the moment that was so painful/ itchy I couldn’t sleep one night. It was hot to the touch so not just me being a wuss. I think that not only do they not bite DH but if they do it’s not a problem as they don’t cause him much bother.

So there may be a solution to that too (antihistamine I wonder? I don’t know either but someone else might).

That always been the way for me.

whats yours? Mine is B and I appear to be quite delicious.

Vitamin B complex. Or Marmite (eat it don’t smother yourself in it!)

Shinyandnew1 · 29/08/2026 13:54

Me too!

Incognito or Smidge work well.

Whatever you do, don’t listen to anyone (Avon reps or their friends!) suggesting the Skin so soft body spray from Avon-you will make yourself horribly greasy, smell disgusting and you will still get the same number of bites. Get something that actually works.

Joliloily · 29/08/2026 13:55

Forget the lemon oil, you need a proper repellent. Deet is regarded as pretty much the gold standard. I’ve used Picaridin which is kinder on your skin than Deet, and I’ve found it works well.

As you are getting bitten at home, I suggest getting a mosquito killing can of spray and give everywhere a good dousing, until the problem resolves. I would also consider sleeping under a mosquito net.

Don’t be tempted to use Avon Skin so Soft. It only works for people who don’t really get bitten. For magnets like us, we need a proper repellent.

Some people suggest drinking alcohol, eating garlic or marmite, or taking vitamin B. There isn’t any evidence supporting the use of these products as repellents.

jeaux90 · 29/08/2026 13:55

I second Smidge. Scottish brand. Really good.

FrogSplash · 29/08/2026 13:56

Definitely Marmite. I took a jar away with me in desperation when I went on an extended three month trip with work in a mozzie minefield. Had a slice of toast with it on every day and was unbitten until the last fortnight when the jar had run out at which point I was bitten everywhere.

I don’t know why it works but it definitely works!

Feedingbirds · 29/08/2026 13:57

We use Incognito on holiday , as of this summer we have a mosquito net over our bed - it works ! Bought from Amazon

Jins · 29/08/2026 14:01

Odomos is the best I’ve tried and I’ve converted a friend who is an even worse magnet than I am

Skin so soft works great for me in Egypt. Doesn't make me greasy either. Guess we're all different & at a few quid for a gallon, it's worth a punt if the OP hasn't tried it yet.

UsernameHoarder · 29/08/2026 14:02

Smudge all over and roll on deet max strength around ankles and shoulders as a minimum here.

Add in socks and long sleeves for the evenings.

And a decent antihistamine every day. Plus the hot spoon method if I do get bitten.

Letsskidaddle · 29/08/2026 14:06

I’m very lucky and have only been bitten about 5 times in my life! The rest of my family are eaten alive and found DEET to be the best repellant. The electric zappers you use after a bite worked amazingly to reduce pain and swelling.

I wondered if I escaped because I was in a room with at least one of them, but now they’re all grown up and I’m alone I’m ignored by the mozzies (the only stealth boast I can make). I hear them whining but they don’t bite. I’m on HRT also.

No idea why I don’t get bitten - I hate marmite, don’t drink alcohol, don’t eat more than normal amounts of garlic, don’t use repellant or fans or nets 😆

Octavia64 · 29/08/2026 14:17

You are using stuff that doesn’t work.

if you get bitten - take an oral antihistamine daily, buy antihistamine cream and steroid cream and apply liberally.

deet is what works if you spray it on you.

Deneke · 29/08/2026 16:51

Take yeast based vitamin B tablets. The mosquitos and midges don't like the taste/smell.
Be warned it does turn your wee bright yellow, but it worth it

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 29/08/2026 16:53

You need Deet bracelets on wrists and ankles, they work well.

anti mosquito patches from the brand Kind. I put 2 to 3 on me at one time whilst on holiday. I managed an entire week in Italy and got bitten only once!

strong mosquito repellent also

I am 0 negative and they love me

Welshwabbit · 29/08/2026 17:11

Following with interest as I am both a magnet and swell up like a balloon as soon as I get bitten. Currently have one upper arm twice the size of the other despite double dosing on antihistamine (which does help). I am going to try the Odomos as can't stand the smell of the DEET based repellent.

ShowOfHands · 29/08/2026 17:17

The links to blood type aren't strong and any evidence seems to link mosquito bites to type O but not in any conclusive way.

I'm type O and never used to get bitten. I then had an iron transfusion and it was like a switch flipping and I was bitten to death for several weeks. It's calmed down again now and they're back to targeting the rest of the family and leaving me alone.

Shinyandnew1 · 29/08/2026 17:21

Type O positive here and get eaten alive.

Definitelygoing · 29/08/2026 17:30

Mosquito plug in seems to work. Have had to use it in the UK so,times.

Sorry, but this advice is quite useless for mosquito magnets.

@Mydietstartstomorrow you need proper insect repellents containing deet, Picaridin/Icaridin, IR3535 or PMD.

Insect repellents to avoid (according to Which?) are citronella spray and bracelets.

There is no scientific evidence to support any of the woo suggestions on here, and if you really are a walking mosquito buffet you need to cover every bit of exposed skin with proper insect repellent containing one of the aforementioned ingredients.

So don't this it's that-I am O positive and they ignore me like the plague.
I always say it's my mean and bitter blood 😂
Poor DH meanwhile is eaten alive.
So is one DS and DD.
All spectacularly fair skinned.

Have heard so many of these remedies and so far nothing helps them but have taken notes so fingers crossed for next holiday.

Where do you live @Mydietstartstomorrow that you have them in your house???
