Is it really that unusual not to colour your hair?

I never have. I was never rebellious in my youth and as an adult have never felt the need.

This is helped (a lot) by the fact that I have that Scandinavian kind of blonde hair naturally, and that at 56 it hasn't yet started going grey. I appreciate that in different circumstances I may well have decided to colour it, but I can't be the only one. 'Everyone' seems to assume my hair is dyed, including hairdressers, on occasion!

I never have because I'm lazy and a cheapskate so couldn't be doing with the maintenance. I also have naturally blonde hair and think any other colour would look too harsh on me.

I experimented with a few outlandish colours at uni but haven't bothered since. My hair grows very fast and I can't be doing with the constant battle with roots.

I don't yet. I'm a mid/late 40's redhead which doesn't take dye very well and have only got a tiny number of greys, less than 20, evenly spread, so there's no point.

I'm 59 with long hair. I've never coloured mine, just doesn't appeal.

It feels unusual the way my female relatives and hairdressers go on about it. I have no desire to spend hours and a fortune dying my hair, even box dyes are costly. And after an allergic reaction year ago, I shouldn't risk it anyway.

I'm 53 with naturally blonde hair and no grey. I probably will dye it when I get grey hair but glad I dont have to at the moment. Apart from a bit of Sun-in my youth I've never dyed it.

I don't bother, I'm not that vain any more it's pretty much white now.

My dad’s family don’t go grey - it’s weird and I’ve inherited it. He’s 79 now grey hardly except for few around his temple and no balding either

It's not unusual at all. I suppose what people like your hairdresser are surprised by is that someone aged 56 hasn't yet lost any of their hair colour, not that you haven't chosen to dye it.

I’ve only ever used Toners and Shaders in my youth, brown henna off and on (I have dark brown hair so it just makes it deeper and glossier) and of late some colour toning conditioning shampoo from Superdrug which tones down the greys that are starting to appear and conditions it. Never had it done in a hairdresser or used bleach and at 60, I won’t be starting. I’d say amongst my friends my age probably about 50% are colouring, quite a few did for a time and then stopped as more grey came through.

I think it's only unusual if you are going grey and relatively young. I have dark brown hair and I started going grey at 21, now I'm nearly 40 I have quite a lot. I go through phases of dying / not dying. It's definitely unusual among people my age with my colouring.

I'm 58 (soon to be 59) and I don't and haven't. I have 'mouse' hair, light brown with paler highlights. It's also very short (grade 3 back and sides, choppy on top but only a few cms long). I'm just starting to get a few silver grey hairs at the side. It isn't worth spending the money to get it coloured as it would need to be done every 6 weeks when I have my hair cut....

I never have. Mid brown hair, going a bit salt and pepper now but I will age gracefully. My mum is 84 and still has largely brown hair with grey flecks, she has never dyed her hair.

It's nice to hear from others who don't.

I have in the past, but only every two years or so. I would have highlights. It didn't matter if they grew out as not many.

But I am on a whole 'natural hair care' trip now so no hairdryer, no sulphates, no colour, nothing. I'd going to go grey naturally.

I think those that do, ruin their hair and it cannot grow very long.

No, if and when it greys I'll consider it, depending, because some greys look amazing, but if it just looks really weird on me (and that's a subjective opinion, but I really feel weird and odd in grey clothes-I just don't feel happy in them like I do with black/white/most brights), I might. But I don't like the idea of wasting time and money on it, plus I don't like that women are pushed to waste time. money and energy on things that don't matter.
This isn't getting better-it's worse because at least society used to allow men to age naturally, now they feel pushed to have hair implants an botox etc-equality should mean none of us being judged as we age-not both sexes feeling they have to hide ageing.

My hairdresser frequently tries to convince me to have highlights. I don't because I'm lazy, so wouldn't bother to maintain them but I also actually really like my hair colour. It's a sort of dark blonde/light brown but very golden. The colour of Welsh gold and very shiny and healthy. It looks loads better like this that with badly maintained dye!

Every so often, it becomes a fashionable colour and then she admires it lots because it's in excellent condition, but mostly just tells me how much better I'd look with highlights. Personally, I think dyed hair looks odd. I'm sure there's plenty of expensive dye jobs I just can't tell are that, but visible dye, like visible make up, looks quite harsh and like a stage costume to me.

I think yes, very unusual. I never have, ginger hair doesn't colour well, and I'm too mean to pay for a professional colour. I do have a great stylist and pay well for a cut.
Almost every woman I know coloured their har pre covid, some stopped then (I'm late 50s) and have gone natural but not many. My mum who is almost 85 has only stopped having a few highlights in the last couple of years.

I would love not to but nearly black hair with silver stripes like Cruella de Vil.

Well if I was still a Scandinavian blonde with no grey at 56 maybe I wouldn’t have, but as a very dark brunette who started going grey at sixteen and was salt and pepper by 40, yep, I dyed my hair! Lucky you!

Mine’s brown & grey & I’ve dyed it random colours occasionally, mainly when it was short, but now I’m aiming for long grey hair. I love that look.

I'm almost 60 and haven't coloured my hair since the first lockdowns in 2020. It's now well past my shoulders (with regular trims). I had always highlighted and coloured it blonde since my late teens, and when I couldn't get to the hairdressers to have it done during Covid, and let it grow out properly, I realised what a lovely natural colour it actually was. it's a very light golden brown, with only a few fine strands of grey at the moment. I'm proud of it, especially at my age, and won't re-colour it now.

I've never coloured my hair. Why would I when my natural hair was a deep auburn. Now it is pure white and still beautiful.
