Has anyone used a speed limiter to avoid further speeding points?

I had a speeding ticket last year for 35 in a 30 - a hot spot for speeding tickets , as you’re coming from a 40 coming from a flyover . I did a course and I didn’t get points.

Just had another - 37 in a 30. This is on a highway I think it’s called - a long stretch of road - that was always a 40 and has an average speed check. My own fault , I knew it had changed . I remember the day , I was in a rush but I wasn’t deliberately speeding .. the road was pretty empty , I guess I kind of thought I could speed up a little between cameras but I do know i am always looking and realising I’m a bit over I’ll slow down. I’m not justifying it but I am a very conscious driver , I always get cars overtaking me for staying at the limit - I don’t want anyone to think I was zooming around residential streets.

Anyway, this is a motability car and I don’t want to risk losing my licence . I have just responded to the notice and no details of penalty yet but from what I read as I’ve done a course I will now get a fine and 3 points on my licence. I don’t want more.

Does anyone use a speed limiter on their car ? How does this work ? If I set it to 30 but then I’m going on roads with a 40 or 50 limit is this easy to change as I am driving along ?

If they are average speed cameras, why the hell would you speed up between them?

As far as how a limiter works, well that depends on your car.

Just use cruise control and stop speeding.

Yes, my limiter is set at 30 most of the time, it's just one button press to switch it on and off. If I'm doing a llonger stretch of motorway or road with average speed cams, I adjust the limiter then put it back to 30. Just one less thing to think about while driving.

Many cars have both speed limiters and cruise control. They work differently but both can help you to keep within speed limits, but you do need to understand how to work them properly on your specific car. That's not meant to be patronising - I've used them on a lot of different cars and they can be confusing.

Speed limiters in particular can be buggars because many of them won't stop you exceeding the set speed downhill - whereas cruise control will.

Anyway, yes, OP, use them, sorry to hear you have got points and good to hear you are wanting to use the tech to avoid speedng in the future.

I use a speed limiter religiously. It's easy to start and then adjust up or down when the speed limit changes. Adjusting it is also a good mental reminder for me of what the limit is on that stretch of road. It does someti es start to go over eg on a downhill stretch but beeps very loudly when this happens so I can slow down.

Personally I prefer it to cruise control, although I know others prefer c c

Whichever you use it will depend on your car so play around with it a bit first. It quickly becomes second nature.

My car has an economy setting where it will accelerate up to the speed limit normally and then be very slow to accelerate beyond that. It really gives you feed back when you are at the speed limit.

My speed limiter is an alert, rather than actually slowing the car down. So if I go above, it won’t stop beeping until I slow down. It’s super annoying, but I guess that’s the point.

The only word of warning is to still be alert yourself and not solely rely on the car. There’s a stretch of road that my car insists is a 70 - but it’s residential, and near a school… 🤦‍♀️ I’ve had other examples of this.
Besides the danger factor, there’s no way you’d be able to argue against the penalty just because your car said it was ok.

Yes, I use a speed limiter. Ask someone has said they're all work differently so you'll have to look at your manual but they are easy use or at least mine is.

I use mine frequently, particularly on roads with average speed checks. I always pop it on when I’m on the motorway too. I have an EV and it’s so easy to speed in them as they’re so quiet and you just don’t hear or feel the speed.

My car has a built in limiter, it's on the cruise control button. I do use it when city driving as theres enough things to pay attention to without adding the speedo.

Are you talking about using your car's own limiter, or trying to add an exterbal one?

You also want to be aware that if you get into a difficult position and have to accelerate to get out of trouble you may not be able to quickly.

My car also pings at me if I go above the speed limit. It does stop after a few pings but it’s a useful reminder to check my speed and ease off the accelerator.

These things also rely on their information being up to date, if limits change they may not know.

I have a Hyundai and previously had a Toyota and before that a BMW. In all of them you could override the limiter by just keeping pressed on the acceleration so this was never an issue.

Some have cameras which can read speed limit signs - they are not infallible but in my experience they are pretty accurate.

I don't have a limiter but I have s hologram that shows what speed i am doing and what I should be doing. It seems accurate and ghe speed has always adjusted immediately when I've gone into different zones.

I use a limiter as all the roads nearby are a 20 and I find it very easy to go slightly over (no cameras i just want to keep to the limit) so I stick it on as I go up our road. Ours is tricky to turn on and requires thought but v easy to adjust so I keep it on the whole journey and just move up or down. It adjusts in 5mph increments

I have a VW and this does not happen with the limiter on only on adaptive cc so OP get to know your car

Yes my car does this too it tells me some roads are a 60 or 70 when they’re clearly not and it also sometimes just tells me a road is 5 when it’s not

Mine is a hybrid but it’s very quiet. I am not a person who speeds on purpose so to speak but sometimes I don’t even realise it and I do also feel pressure from other drivers when I’m driving slower which I know I shouldn’t
