Memory recall of nearly being abducted

I’ve had trouble sleeping in the night so my mind has been wandering and replaying events that have happened and I recalled this one experience that left me shaking and remains a mystery years later. I wonder if anyone can shed any light on what they think might have been going on.

I was around 16-17 years old but looked much younger, at a guess probably looked about 14. It was around 1999 or 2000 but I would say 2000 seems likely. I lived in a somewhat middle class town in west London (I’m being vague on purpose) and had travelled to a bus stop to catch a bus to college. It was between 8.30 and 10.30am. The day was clear and bright with a slight chill - probably spring time. I remember exactly what I was wearing - I had on wide leg trousers as the fashion at the time and a jacket. I was completely covered up. This is an important detail I feel I need to share.

I was at the bus stop just past some roundabouts waiting for the bus that wasn’t particularly regular. That morning was busy with cars on the road but hardly anyone walking which was very normal for that area in those days. Anyway I was at the bus stop for probably around 5 mins. A car pulls up at this bus stop. It’s a narrow road so the car stopping prevents other drivers from behind them overtaking. The older man with glasses rolls his window down and asks me where a named church is. He had a map open on his lap (obviously no gps at the time) and I said it’s just at the end of the road. He said can you show me. I said it’s straight at the end of the road. At this point he got really angry and said get in the car. I went silent and didn’t know what to do. I could see he was debating whether to get out the car or not. Then he screamed at me get in the f’ing car now. I just froze and backed away. I didn’t leave, I was trying to process this and then in frustration he banged his hands on the wheel and drove off. I’m not kidding about the next part, I really wish I was. I was now stood much further away from the road so in a pavement and more visible. That stop didn’t have a bus shelter so I was a bit further back from the stand. Anyway a minute later another car pulls up, same place with a different man/ different car rolls his window down asking me where that same church was. This time I didn’t respond and ignored him. He too waited to decide what to do. After about another minute with cars beeping him/ overtaking he drove off. At that point I went into panic mode trying to process this when a third car (!!!) pulls up and before the guy even opened his mouth a load of expletives left mine as I shouted at this man as loudly as I could so anyone could hear. He drove off pretty quick. Soon after my bus finally turned up and I was shaking. Absolutely terrified and shaking. I still think now, I’m older with kids and I think whether I would have been abducted that day in broad bloody daylight too!

We have mobile phones now and so if this happened we can take pictures but to this day I can’t help wonder what if. I know it’s silly but it still freaks me out.

Three different cars/men? How scary.

Aboutlola · 28/08/2026 06:20

If it is any comfort, the three of them don’t sound like the sharpest tools in the box. They formulated a plan that involved them each asking a girl where the church was… that was the extent of their imagination.

Sorry not sure about the terminology. Do you mean they were in it together? I think so but I do find it weird that all three would target the same area and me? But then again how does any of this make sense.

They sound like men with very limited intelligence and nasty motives. Dirty thick twats. Don’t give them a further though

Sinkingfeeling952 · 28/08/2026 06:23

It’s probably more likely they were going to a funeral at the church or something similar, as whilst there may have been one predatory man (and it was also drilled into me never to get close to someone asking for directions or get in a car even if there was a woman passenger), it doesn’t seem likely there would be 3 in such close proximity and all doing the same thing / in a busy area.

How deeply unpleasant and frightening to process even after many years. I hope you feel safe now. 💐

Actually that’s a good point

the alternative is that they really were a very thick trio

What a traumatic experience for you. 😔

It reminds me of the time I was waiting for my dad and uncle and this man asked me if I wanted to go up on the downs with him. I said no and he then asked me if I wanted to see some puppies. This was a busy seafront infront of a lot of people too. At this time my dad and uncle came along - so pleased they did. I loved dogs and think I could of been tempted.

Thank you, yes a lot more now. As I have kids, this memory does make me think when the time comes how I can train them to spot signs or no what to do in these types of situation.

So shocking. I hope you have comfort in knowing that even at the time you could probably tell something felt off.

I don’t think I did tbh. I felt sorry for him. It was years later that I realised the implications. I remember my uncle looking angrily at this man and I didn’t understand why.

GoldTie · 28/08/2026 07:56

I think he was probably an entitled man, looking for directions to a funeral and panicking as traffic was building up behind him, so shouted at you and wanted you to get in the car and direct him. Obviously completely unreasonable but the shit older men expect from teenage girls is or was pretty common.

I remember being 17, and a friend had her first car, in the 1980s. An older man begged for a lift up the hill, we thought he was unwell. No, in retrospect he was just very drunk. We actually drove with him. Also being 16 and being summoned over at about 7am in the dark as I walked to my Saturday job, to give directions to a man in car, who then exposed himself.

wallshade · 28/08/2026 08:02

I would just assume they were going to an event and struggling to find the church but the first guy was aggressive/weird!
Whilst not impossible it’s seem highly unlikely 3 men with cars all plotted this and thought it was the best way to abduct someone. It seems more likely a coincidence and it’s just unfortunate the first arsehole was first.

I absolutely wouldnt trust my own memory from that long ago. Everytime a memory gets recalled it gets fused and changed with other stories and narratives in our heads as we try to make sense of the world. This memory is as likely to be about your current state of mind than actual factual recall of what happened.

The Gift of Fear is a really interesting book if you're interested. About how we should trust our instincts in the moment. I'll be making my daughters read it soon.

ErlingHaalandsManBun · 28/08/2026 08:07

This has made me think of something that happened to me and my friend when we were 14.

Walking home from school, we had been to the shop, and we had to walk down an alleyway to get out the other end to head towards our houses. As we were walking down the alleyway, about half way down (it was fairly long) there was a man, standing there, just doing nothing, and he had an overcoat on.

We walked past him and he said 'hello' and we said 'hello' back. When we had got past, he then said 'girls' and we turned round and he exposed himself to us, he was naked under his overcoat.

My friend was scared and I don't to this day know what came over me but I didn't feel scared. I remember just feeling really angry. How dare he? I shouted at him to 'fuck off, and called him a dirty bastard' I continued to yell at him that I was calling the police. Which I did when I got home.

His reaction when I yelled at him was one of surprise. He didn't get the reaction from me that he was expecting to and he ran away.

The police never caught him but they came into school during assembly to warn people of him while walking home.

I think back about that episode and still wonder what would have happened had he reacted negatively to my outburst and how dangerous it could have been. My reaction towards him, in hindsight, I think was foolish.

RealEagle · 28/08/2026 08:12

Similar happened to me and my friend,we was about 9 or 10 at the time it was in the 70s.I often think about it now suppose we had got in his car.Luckily we were streetwise little shits.

No this is fact and exactly how it happened. I wrote it down in a diary after the incident. I haven’t been able to shake it since like some sort of PTSD

See that’s what I thought highly unlikely but all men by themselves. All stopping to ask me. Even waiting around after wouldn’t help. I mean it could be innocent, but the probability and how it happened (not something I can describe fully - it’s like a feeling of dread) made me think that this was a bad coincidence or they were working together.

OP, I’m with the people who think you encountered some odd, bad-tempered men on their way to a funeral or other church event. However, it concerns me that you feel the need to explain that you were ‘covered up’. If you were for some reason travelling to college in a bikini on a chilly spring morning, it would not make anyone’s predatory actions one whit more ‘legitimate’.

I was scene setting to show that how I was dressed wasn’t exactly making me stand out.

Look at this rationally, OP. Only one of the three tried to get you to get into his car. The second one only asked directions to the same church! But never mentioned getting into his car. You didn’t reply, so he was presumably waiting for you to say something. The third guy didn’t get a chance to say anything because you shouted at him. So that’s one of three men with a possible predatory intent. Isn’t it more likely they were just all going to the church for some reason?
