Bug found in washing machine door after wash, what could it be?

What’s this bug? It’s incisde my washing machine door. I live in County Durham. Ground floor flat. I took in a top off the line that had been dropped a few days ago and put that in the machine.

opened the door tonight after a wash and spin cycle to see… that.

stupidly I ended up screaming and panicking, I’ve got a phobia of crawly things.

Google says it’s a caterpillar/moth; chatGPT said it’s an American cockroach and to ring pest control.

i can’t and am considering leaving the house until i can get someone to remove it. And the washing machine.

what is it? Will it have a family?

They can crawl up drains, it's not a reflection on you. You say you live in a flat, who owns the building?

Cockroaches don't have wings do they? It looks like some kind of grasshopper / cricket kind of thing to me.

What size is it? Large wings... to me it looks like a fairly hefty moth that has lost all the scales from its wings and body (as would happen if it went through a wash). Similar to this.

Doesn't look like a cockroach to me, ones I have seen are flat shiny and a kind of mahogany colour .

It looks more like a hoverfly with the brownish wings and other colouring (and the large hoverfly eyes). There are many different ones, this one is an example;

Utterly harmless even before it went through a 59 minute mixed colours wash.

Cockroaches certainly do have wings, as I found out to my horror whilst on holiday abroad somewhere hot and humid.
These ones came out at night and quite liked crawling over sweaty sleeping bodies. They left a sticky trail on your skin….

It looks a lot like the moths we’ve had coming in recently. They sit wings wrapped round them, and don’t do much, unless moved.

The legs will tell you if it's a cockroach they have distinctive legs. It will also be alive no doubt when you open and they run fast. So be prepared. If it's dead then less likely.

I've seen lots of cockroaches in my time, and that isn't one. Its body isn't broad enough. I agree with the posters who think that you've washed a moth.

Is it very big, OP? The fact that it was probably brought in with something hanging out on a washing line makes me suspect a convolvulus hawk-moth. It has the right body and wing shape. They are big migratory moths that are around at this time of year, and have a strange fixation with resting on drying washing!

I know it’s silly to get so upset but I live alone, off work with autistic breakdown, menopausal at 35, and can’t think how the hell to solve this.

Can you send the pic to a local pest control company for identification? It looks like a cockroach to me and the fact it won't die is suspicious...

Cockroaches are smaller. It looks like a moth or cricket type thing. Just use some tongs and fling it in the bin or down the sink plug hole. Then add some bleach if you want extra reassurance!
It doesn't look like a cockroaxh to me. I had one in the kitchen a few months ago and flipped out - I think it got brought in from some veg as I'd just done my shop and was unloading it :/
I killed it and almost dissected it to make sure it was DEAD dead and to be certain it was a disgusting roach.
I went down a research rabbit hole and made DH buy cockroach poison gel and put it under the kitchen kickboards. So if you are worried you can do the same.

If my identification is right then there won't be more of them, if that's any help. Could you open the machine door and use a cloth or couple of sheets of kitchen towel to pick it out, so you don't have to see or directly touch it?
