Banned from my local supermarket after an argument with a member of staff- my language was bad though.

So today I’ve been banned from my local supermarket, I’m not proud of what happened but I think that the member of staff was also in the wrong.

i was in the fruit and veg aisle looking to get some pre- chopped melon. The ones that come in sealed plastic pots. They were stacked quite tightly and some of the dates were quite soon, so I decided to go towards the back, in doing this I accidentally knocked 5 or 6 pots off the shelf. Immediately a female member of staff was on me- telling me “ you’re supposed to take the ones from the front”. I apologised for knocking some of them from the shelf but explained that it was my choice to choose the date that I wanted. By this point I had reassembled the display, so no harm done. She carried on chuntering so I said something like “ it’s really not a big deal, let’s move on”. As I went to walk away she said, “ it’s just not on”. I’m afraid this is where I let myself down. She was a small pointy woman of about 60 with short dyed red hair. I asked her what her problem was and she said “ customers like you thinking they own the place” to which I replied ( I know this is bad) “fuck off and shut your cunt up you fucking crackhead Anne Robinson lookalike”. It’s not often I take such a low blow but I had a rough upbringing and when I’m really pushed it emerges. The lady stormed off.

as I was leaving a manager asked me if I could step into an office for a chat, I said no thank you. She then said well I’m afraid that you won’t be able to shop here moving forwards.

so that’s that. Not proud of my mouth but she was a fucking horrible twat.

Mauled? I picked them up from the shelf? Is there a more hygienic method that I’m unaware of? Should I have donned a pair of fucking latex gloves?

😂😂😂

JudyTeeny · 24/08/2026 23:08

She was wrong for what she said, but you know you made it so much worse, op. If anything similar happens again, take a deep breath and laugh, that would annoy her even more than your swearing, because I don't think she could report you for laughing!
I must admit I laughed when I read it was Waitrose, I was imagining Farm Foods or Heron!

Pathetic!

Yes, your post I quoted was.

😂😂😂

Seriously, what's so funny? The OP's posts are cringeworthy, puerile and immature.

I question the maturity of anyone LOL-ing at her comments.

Cringing for you... 😬

Exactly. The OP's behaviour was rude and unpleasant, and the store were right to ban her. Cringing at anyone thinking her behaviour was funny, or any of her posts since. Speaks volumes about those posters.

She said she had a rough upbringing. Now she lives in a posh house and shops at Waitrose. That does happen you know. Have you heard of social mobility? I know it doesn’t happen as much now.

My DH grew up on a council estate and we live in a nice big house now. Should he have stayed on the council estate and known his place?

Anne is that you?

Flossyknicks · 24/08/2026 23:15

How many people are going to look out for the Anne Robinson lookalike at Waitrose in Alderley Edge?

I know it’s bad, It was just her nastiness and rudeness over nothing, I am going to try and email an apology

the email wont do shit, because all they presume is your doing it cause u got banned, i can understand the dates thing and but jesus holy shit bag of pickles, why in gods name did you respond like you did, no wonder they banned you

that said reflect and learn some polite vocabulary for these situations

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 24/08/2026 23:27

The juxtaposition actually made me laugh a bit... the situation being akin to Muzak that's blasted apart by a response like Rage Against the Machine.

Or to give it a muppet theme, like Beaker playing the triangle before Animal comes in madly on drums.

You've learned your lesson hopefully.

And their presumption would be correct.

@Alderedge1 Obviously this wasn't your finest hour, but there were mitigating circumstances. You were provoked. The woman was extremely rude to you, a customer. Anyone would feel annoyed about being told to take the older food from the front. There is no supermarket law that says we're "supposed to" and we have all - every single one of us - taken fish etc from the back of the shelf rather than the one at the front which expires the next day. Only a fool would do otherwise.

We have also all accidentally knocked items off a shelf. This sort of thing happens many times, every day, in all supermarkets. As you said "really not a big deal".

Quite extraordinary that she then doubled down with "customers like you thinking they own the place". There is no supermarket universe where this is an appropriate thing to say to a customer.

So, I'm not surprised you lost your temper. It's just unfortunate you have such a talent for profanity.

I feel fairly sure that this staff member didn't report what she'd said to you to the manager. It will have been an edited version of the truth.

What I would do, in your shoes, is write an indignant-loyal-Waitrose-customer letter to the manager and fully describe the woman's rudeness. Say that of course you regret your own rudeness etc, etc.

Noshadealltea · 24/08/2026 23:57

I’m with you in that you can pick whichever packet of melon you want.

Your reaction to someone being a bit prickly and grumpy was totally outrageous, and a total overreaction.

Id not go back, changed hair or not - they’ll remember you for a long time I’m sure. Particularly if, as you’ve alluded to, the shop you were in was Waitrose.

TheFormerMrsTruelove · 24/08/2026 23:58

I’ve got a gob like a fishwife and love a well placed c bomb, but you know it’s not normal to react to something so small with such a high level of aggression? All that was needed was to tell her to shush and that if the supermarket had decent use by dates, then you’d take from the front, but as they don’t, they can deal with the consequences. Yes, she was a bit of a knobhead, but she came at you at a twenty. That you’ve lost it to the extent you’re going back at her at a 50 isn’t great. If we all do that then society breaks down because we’ll all be in fight or flight mode. Have you got something else going on that’s just wound you up and she’s taken the brunt of it? Or have you just lost control?

Omg! This gave me and my partner a good laugh. I agree with you. Its your money and you have a choice of what you spend it on.
I really hate people like this. Its like they are the owner of the supermarket and they are personally losing money if you happen to not purchase their rotting melon.
I wouldnt worry, I was banned from a supermarket for tasting the grapes from a pack before I purchased it. You know the loose grapes. Not the packaged pots. I went back a week later and nothing happened. Tbh, I didnt much like the supermarket anyway. Low quality asda.

Pussygaloregalapagos · 25/08/2026 00:41

Not surprised you got banned!
