Banned from my local supermarket after an argument with a member of staff- my language was bad though.

So today I’ve been banned from my local supermarket, I’m not proud of what happened but I think that the member of staff was also in the wrong.

i was in the fruit and veg aisle looking to get some pre- chopped melon. The ones that come in sealed plastic pots. They were stacked quite tightly and some of the dates were quite soon, so I decided to go towards the back, in doing this I accidentally knocked 5 or 6 pots off the shelf. Immediately a female member of staff was on me- telling me “ you’re supposed to take the ones from the front”. I apologised for knocking some of them from the shelf but explained that it was my choice to choose the date that I wanted. By this point I had reassembled the display, so no harm done. She carried on chuntering so I said something like “ it’s really not a big deal, let’s move on”. As I went to walk away she said, “ it’s just not on”. I’m afraid this is where I let myself down. She was a small pointy woman of about 60 with short dyed red hair. I asked her what her problem was and she said “ customers like you thinking they own the place” to which I replied ( I know this is bad) “fuck off and shut your cunt up you fucking crackhead Anne Robinson lookalike”. It’s not often I take such a low blow but I had a rough upbringing and when I’m really pushed it emerges. The lady stormed off.

as I was leaving a manager asked me if I could step into an office for a chat, I said no thank you. She then said well I’m afraid that you won’t be able to shop here moving forwards.

so that’s that. Not proud of my mouth but she was a fucking horrible twat.

If this true I am glad you were banned from the supermarket. I would not want to hear someone swearing and abusing a member of staff whilst shopping and this awful behaviour needs dealing with. If you have children you are setting a very low bar for their behaviour.

GameOfJones · 24/08/2026 21:27

I would be very surprised if they'll let you back, even if you do apologise. My brother used to work for Waitrose and once you're banned, that's it. Why would they risk having you in their shop again when you were aggressive and behaved like a complete loon?

SquirrelGG · 24/08/2026 21:28

I'm Team Supermarket, and well done to the manager for banning you. What an appalling way to behave, and yet you seem to be trying to justify it. Coming onto MN to tell us how badly you've been treated doesn't seem to be eliciting the response you thought it would. All you've done is show how much more unpleasant you are than the woman you think was so terrible.

Waitrose

OP 😂

honestly you snapped when pushed

there was no way she should be talking to customers like that! It doesn’t quite warrant your Anne Robinson line but she pushed you, you’ve clearly snapped.

please don’t be so hard on yourself, if you’re not violent and don’t usually react this way pleas don’t spend hours reading a Mumsnet thread and beating yourself up over it ❤️

have you tried M&S ? Also quite nice

I don’t think the op needs this, she was way over the top.

Damnloginpopup · 24/08/2026 21:36

A stack of chopped cantaloupe?

Fucking Waitrose. I'm banning myself.

Shatteredallthetimelately · 24/08/2026 21:38

I dont think the was expecting this level of viciousness.

I expect that's exactly how the Waitrose staff member felt too.

She posted for attention. She got what she wanted. Any response, positive or negative seemingly gives her what she was looking for.

WorsethingshappenatC · 24/08/2026 21:44

I'm totally in the minority here, this cracked me up! Yes it was an extreme and unpleasant response, but she was the one that wouldn't leave it. You've expressed remorse, awareness that it wasn't great behaviour and said it's not a regular occurrence. I'd just shop elsewhere and I wouldn't be apologising. I hope you enjoyed your melon!

Alderedge1 · 24/08/2026 17:16

Attention, acceptance and love

I can offer forgiveness if you accept it was really VERY naughty OP.🤗

Pinepeak2434 · 24/08/2026 21:49

She sounded rude and it would have got my back up but I think you went overboard. My teen son is a student with a hospitality job and the amount of grown men who think it’s acceptable to go up to his face and yell is scary. Sometimes it over the most trivial thing such as not getting ice!

ilovesooty · 24/08/2026 21:50

She hasn't expressed any remorse other than she embarrassed herself by her behaviour and she got herself banned. She's not sorry for abusing the employee and couldn't care less if the woman is upset.

And she intends to say "sorry, not sorry" because she wants to be allowed back to shop there.

fudgyfox · 24/08/2026 21:50

Sorry OP what you said was really awful and you deserve to be barred. Maybe if you make a sincere apology to them and the woman in question they might let you back but I'd be too mortified to ever go back if it were me!

Bowies · 24/08/2026 21:51

The manager asked to speak to you and there was a possible chance to apologise and sort things out but as you refused, she really had no choice but to ban you.

I would just cut my losses and not go back there.

The woman was annoying, but no more than that, What you said was extremely abusive and personally attacking her appearance as well. It’s pretty unforgivable IMO and likely she was scared.

Calliopespa · 24/08/2026 21:56

Could you ask if you are still allowed to shop there if you tie a gag round your mouth?

Thegirlwhowent · 24/08/2026 21:59

She was 'a small pointy woman' of about 60 with red hair? Why on earth have you mentioned that? Her size, shape, age and hair colour are irrelevant. You were horribly abusive and deserve to be banned.

Endorewitch · 24/08/2026 22:02

Alderedge1 · 24/08/2026 14:02

I know and I agree it looks disproportionate. I think it was just her nasty, spiky unpleasantness and the fact that she thought she could tell which pot to buy, it was the “acting like I own the place” comment that tipped me. I was just trying to find some melon that would last a few days!!

Sgop justifying yourself for a vile obnoxious pdrsonal co.me t,with appalling language. She wont accept your aplopgy. Why should she?She was being annoying. A jobsworthy. Your behaviour was appalling. You must bave really upset her. Unbelievable. Surprused you have posted on here. We are all shocked .

This. ^

I am completely gobsmacked that a few people on here are finding the OP funny, and she's playing on it by posting some totes hilaire 'oh gosh what am I like?' type comments. 🙄

Fuckitydoodah · 24/08/2026 22:05

I accept that I'm extremely immature but this has made me laugh out loud. It's like something out of a Ricky Gervais comedy.

It was very naughty of you OP and in real life I'd have been very shocked to over hear it.

HalzTangz · 24/08/2026 22:07

Judging by the swearing in pretty much every reply OP I would say your reaction to the shop worker wasn't a one off, you have an anger issue, go get some therapy and speak to people respectfully. It more than possible to get your point across without swearing or shouting.
And don't blame living on a council estate as an excuse for your behaviours, thousands and thousands of people were brought up on council estates and managed to conduct themselves respectively

'Very naughty' is making it sound whimsical and amusing like she farted in the checkout line right next to the vicar.

Her behaviour was puerile and abusive and extremely unpleasant. This is why she has been banned from the store.

Stop playing it down by saying her behaviour was 'very naughty.' Sounds like something you'd read in an Enid Blyton novel about a child who knocked on a door and ran away!
.

LemonLass · 24/08/2026 22:14

@Alderedge1 well if you are banned for being abusive (and despite relenting on mumsnet) it doesn't change anything by asking if YABU/YANBU... You knew the answer before you posted?

BoredZelda · 24/08/2026 22:17

Alderedge1 · 24/08/2026 13:58

I hear you however in all of my life I’ve never had an argument with a member of staff in a shop. I’ve literally shopped in that supermarket hundreds of times

You went from zero to that over some melon? I’m not at all convinced.

HalzTangz · 24/08/2026 22:17

keepincool · 24/08/2026 20:57

I think the OP is angry and kicking back because she's being attacked from all sides. People are basically calling her a scrote, a thief, a bad mother, a bad friend, a troll and an all round nasty piece of work. The hypocrisy is staggering. I'm not excusing what the OP did, but she's acknowledged that it was a bad thing and has been honest about the event. I dont think the was expecting this level of viciousness.

Edited for typo.

Edited

I think the OP is just showing her true colours, I don't think her behaviour with the employee was a one off either
