Banned from my local supermarket after an argument with a member of staff- my language was bad though.

So today I’ve been banned from my local supermarket, I’m not proud of what happened but I think that the member of staff was also in the wrong.

i was in the fruit and veg aisle looking to get some pre- chopped melon. The ones that come in sealed plastic pots. They were stacked quite tightly and some of the dates were quite soon, so I decided to go towards the back, in doing this I accidentally knocked 5 or 6 pots off the shelf. Immediately a female member of staff was on me- telling me “ you’re supposed to take the ones from the front”. I apologised for knocking some of them from the shelf but explained that it was my choice to choose the date that I wanted. By this point I had reassembled the display, so no harm done. She carried on chuntering so I said something like “ it’s really not a big deal, let’s move on”. As I went to walk away she said, “ it’s just not on”. I’m afraid this is where I let myself down. She was a small pointy woman of about 60 with short dyed red hair. I asked her what her problem was and she said “ customers like you thinking they own the place” to which I replied ( I know this is bad) “fuck off and shut your cunt up you fucking crackhead Anne Robinson lookalike”. It’s not often I take such a low blow but I had a rough upbringing and when I’m really pushed it emerges. The lady stormed off.

as I was leaving a manager asked me if I could step into an office for a chat, I said no thank you. She then said well I’m afraid that you won’t be able to shop here moving forwards.

so that’s that. Not proud of my mouth but she was a fucking horrible twat.

Can it be reviewed? The store manager has a duty of care towards his staff and has done the correct thing. It’s not an automatic right to shop in Waitrose (or any other supermarket).

I’m going to leave it a few weeks and then go back. I’m actually changing my hair colour next week so I’m hoping I’ll go unnoticed

The woman you shouted at won’t forget your face.

You showed completely rude and disgusting behaviour. There’s no excuse at all.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 24/08/2026 17:12

Im sorry I did have a giggle at your response. And that is SOME response you covered all food groups there 😆

Yes I suppose so. I’ll just keep my (newly dyed brown) head down. I’m sorry that I let myself down snd that I’ve been banned, however she (Anne) was awful to me so I don’t really care if I upset her. Sorry if that winds people up, but that’s the truth.

So what should you do if you want melon for Wednesday but all the pots at the front are best before Monday? Of course you’ll look for a longer date. Don’t be silly.

You could just buy a fresh melon and cut it yourself ?

Tbh I worked at Aldi (so a bit different) and I couldn’t remember the faces of anyone who verbally abused me apart from one woman who called me “scrawny prawny” when I tried to stop her shop lifting.

thisishowidisappear · 24/08/2026 17:17

you are free to pick the dates you want ( ex hospitality worker) please be more careful and do put them back in right dates.
if you paying then you select whichever dates you want.
you have no idea how many times that poor woman got moaned just that day though. I’m afraid that abuse was too much ( and you know it so i’m not going to berate you).
i think you should take in an apology note and some chocolates only because that woman deserves it.

Uricon2 · 24/08/2026 17:18

Everyone who finds this so hilarious might think about this. I'm in my 60s, I can certainly swear (and do) but for my generation the C word was regarded as awful. Yes, she was annoying (from your account) but the barrage you unleashed really wasn't OK, so perhaps consider how might have made her feel.

Not every older woman is your foul mouthed, rough mother @Alderedge1

Exactly. So much for the posters who charitably thought she felt bad about her behaviour.

keepincool · 24/08/2026 17:19

I believe your post is genuine @Alderedge1 , because "there but for the grace of God..." and all that.

I'm AuDHD and have no filter. I can also go from 0 - 100 when angry as I simply can't hold my thoughts and count to 10. When I'm really angry I kind of disassociate and calmly watch the angry me kicking off, it's not nice when it happens. I used to think that it only happened when I drank too much, but I've cut down massively and it has since happened when I'm stone cold sober. Last time was with my conspiracy theorist sister who kept on at me to watch a violent clip on her phone and shoving it in my face after me telling her I didn’t want to watch it. Similar to your encounter, she kept coming back and not letting it go because I needed 'educating' 🙄. She's now barred from my life 😁

I understand your remorse and thoughts about apologising. I would apologise, not to try and get the ban overturned, but simply to acknowledge that what you said was very offensive and you're sorry for saying it.

My local M&S are used to me rummaging at the back of shelves for the longest date, it's never been a problem. It probably takes me an hour longer to shop than most people as I have to check all the use by / best before dates for everything I purchase. I rarely buy any fruit or veg that doesn't have longer than 3 days to use. That's partly due to a rough estate childhood where sometimes the only food on offer was either off, rancid, or mouldy.

I do feel bad that I let myself down, but I’m not a particularly bothered if I upset her as she was vile. I agree that my words were inappropriate.

So your only regret is that you were embarrassed and inconvenienced?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 24/08/2026 17:22

Oh it’d have to be Waitrose wouldn’t it. It wouldn’t be The Aldi 🤣

Livelovebehappy · 24/08/2026 17:23

I can’t believe you’ve even admitted on here to that behaviour. It’s not a story I would repeat to anyone. I’d be mortified and embarrassed. If you come out with that sort of language/comment when in public, what are you like behind closed doors??

SewYellowLikeButter · 24/08/2026 17:25

Am I the only person who finds this funny? The shop keeper was being silly as a person can buy whichever date they like. Otherwise we’d all end up shopping every day or eating expired food.

She will think again before berating a grown adult.
