What would you buy if your partner told you to spoil yourself?

If your partner gave you free reign and said “take this card, spoil yourself, no limit” what would you buy?

something you’ve had your eye on but usually wouldn’t get for yourself or just something you decide on a whim you want..

but if it were a real life offer of a little treat I’d go for a paperback and some fancy chocolates (maybe a bottle of Sherry!)

I drunkenly bought a horse. 😂

Dh’s approach is happy wife, happy life. I grew up having horses, so not entirely a random thing to do, but I got out of horses to focus on my career and travelling and having kids. I always had this horse in my head. That one day, I’d find this very specific horse and I would have a horse again.

One day, I had too much wine. I saw a horse for sale who was exactly the horse in my dreams. I cried and Dh said, why don’t you buy him? Don’t worry about the money! Four days later, I drove from one end of the UK to the other to view this horse and paid a deposit on him. A week later, he was delivered to me.

I quite sensibly don’t drink anymore because I clearly make some wild decisions when I do. 🤣 But 4 years later, I still have the horse and he is the best boy ever. ☺️

My DH knows better than to say this … these days when I’ve said “oh I’m only going to look “ he sighs and tells me to ring on the way home and he’ll sort out a stable . 4 times so far . But in my defence , they’ve all cost me less than £1k . One cost me a pound !

That said , I bought my own retirement present , which was an Irish Sports horse , and my absolute unicorn .

If money genuinely were no object (meaning it would have to someone other than DH sponsoring my spoilage!) I’d hire a housekeeper and a personal assistant and a personal chef and a personal trainer and I’d spend every winter somewhere sunny with beautiful scenery.

I have been to larger signings in the Europe, a mix of MM MF. There you pay one amount, you queue to get in (but it's quite fun, plenty of time to chat with others) and how long you spend with an author depends a lot. Very high-sought after ones - you really just spend 15 seconds it seems. I had one where Julia Quinn attended when Bridgerton was just out the year before, it was mayhem but she just signed a book, said "nice to meet you" and off you go to make space for the next one.

Other authors are happy to talk, about their lives, books, travel.

These signings are just one day, some with smaller venues have 2 days with different authors on different days.
There are sometimes organised meets the day before but it's not often. There is a huge Facbook community which often organises stuff themselves.

Pure MM/queer lit signings - smaller, 50, not 300 authors. There is often a meet the night before and an organised party the evening of the signings. I spent the whole 6-7 hours just chatting to the authors and also to plenty of other readers I met on other occasions, The authors are mainly indie, with a large social media presence and it's a nice community.

In the US there are some signing where they offer tickets which include special events with authors, meals, activities and after-parties. There are panels you can attend as a reader. There is even now a queer lit cruise one, stuck on the ocean for 3 days together.

It's not the way I work, or OH and I work. Looking around for things to spend money on feels like a child with coins in their pocket wonderig what to buy.
Buying things does not give me a boost. If I do need something - like a new pair of winter boots then I will buy them.

If it was lottery money or something and truly without limit would quit my job and treat it like a salary / pension. Help the DC, parents, siblings etc.

If it was loads of money that had to be spent on ‘stuff’ and work, home and so on had to stay the same: family chef. Like @VoltaireMittyDream

Bought myself a kitchenaid mixer this week as I fancied a treat going into autumn.

I'd buy a visit from a professional de-clutterer.

Haha no not a journalist, though “how to lose a guy in 10 days” is one of my favourite films!

There were only a few responses when I last checked so thought I’d leave it to see if more accumulated.

if you were interested in my thoughts, I think it’s sad that some how decided to see it in a negative way. The gesture didn’t replace my partners efforts to be thoughtful or do nice things for me.. he really does. It was simply an acknowledgement to the fact that with work, kids, household usual ground hog day stuff, I rarely treat myself or pick something I want for me.. so he wanted to encourage that. That’s all.

Still mulling over what it is that I’d like, I’m very content and also work very hard myself, have my own money and not overly materialistic.
