Anyone concerned about Meta Smart Glasses? Did you know there is an app that scans for them?

I knew already but to be honest was too lazy to look into it. I came across this article today…(edited to add it’s not a Facebook link and it just takes you to an lbc interview on Google)

(link didn’t work, see next post)

and downloaded the app that he made. Here is a screenshot of it in the App Store…(wait for it to be approved obviously)….

and there seems to be more than one, so the one done by the man interviewed is the one with the yellow canary.

I’m not leaving the house this weekend though so won’t be able to see if it picks anything up.

Are you all much more on the ball than I am? Is this very old news? Anyway, I’m glad I read it today.

Someone sitting still or focusing on something could be a perv, or could be someone with a visual impairment needing more time to ‘see’/process something or needs a sit down because it’s exhausting navigating a world designed for sighted people.

Sorry to keep banging this drum but there’s a lot of misconceptions on this thread that is understandable because disabilities in general aren’t widely understood.

I just worry people might get branded a ‘perv’ when they’re nothing of the sort, and will be driven back into isolation and out of society because of it.

I don’t know what the answer is, but I don’t think this is it.

So again, a light or clear branding on the glasses would tell people the user isn't trying to secretly perve. If a visually impaired person is so keen not to be identified as visually impaired they don't want anything signifying the glasses are meta-glasses or actively recording they have the choice not to wear the glasses. The same way that someone with difficulty walking has the option not to have a blue badge in their car and someone who struggles with standing long periods has the option not to wear a lanyard or just ask people on the tube if they can have their seat because they have issues standing. But in those cases, the person with mobility issues can't use blue badge spaces, might have to cope with standing because the people sitting aren't mind readers.

Did anyone say that? No they didn’t. People have acknowledged they are good for visually impaired people.

There’s people saying they would avoid being near someone with them on, and the thread is about an app designed for that purpose. I wouldn’t want to experience going out with people avoiding me like that.

There’s definitely an issue here - technology is advancing faster than we can regulate it. Rules around posting recordings online and an obvious sign on the glasses if recording is taking place seem like better solutions to me.

But that relies on our government having a strong handle on regulating it and the tech/expertise to do so, which is nigh on impossible, so I can understand why people are trying to keep themselves safe instead. I’m just sad something with the potential to be so great has this seedy side to it as well. This is why we can’t have nice things!

rereturner · 22/08/2026 00:31

Yes I completely agree that a light should show on the glasses if they are recording and storing the content for the individual to use later.

blossomsnow · 22/08/2026 00:32

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 21/08/2026 21:34

Ohh. So what’s the solution then? I don’t want to be filmed when I’m somewhere minding my own business.

You're probably being filmed hundreds of times a day anyway

I beseech people to be level headed about this and not get swept up in the media frenzy. My brother uses these as he is visually impaired with very little vision. They are his lifeline, they help him to read packages, menus and letters. They allow him to have independence. With them he is able to take a group photo of our family with one command. He is able to check medication packets.

Not everyone using them is a pervert.

This all sounds amazing.
I have a fluctuating visual impairment. It gives me small tasters of what people must deal with and I think any tech that can help them is a great development

Happysnappydays · 22/08/2026 00:38

I wonder what the proportion of VI people is to perverts. I suspect there are more perverts.

Happysnappydays · 22/08/2026 00:59

AI suggests to me that 10 million men in the UK view pornography. They won't all be men who'd like to spy on or stalk women with meta glasses, but if even 2 out of 10 would? And I strongly suspect they would.

Persephonia1966 · 22/08/2026 01:06

But filming adults without their consent isn't an illegal sexual behaviour. It's weird and creepy, especially when the whole aim is sexual voyeurism but the men doing it wouldn't self report as having a paraphilia and wouldn't be considered to be doing a sexual offence. Not would the apparently millions of men who view creepy voyeuristic "street life" videos. AI isn't taking them into consideration in it's figures. Although their are 2 million people living with site loss in the UK not all of them want or would benefit from Meta Glasses so the real potential market from that group is smaller than the AI suggests

Basically I think the ratios of potential wearers of the glasses put forward by the AI is well of. I shall continue to consider them pervert glasses if I see someone actively using them while hiding the fact they are using them.

Here we go with another thread of normies being offended by disabled people existing in public and using assistive technology.

If I have to wear a badge that says hearing impaired when I'm wearing ai glasses then you can wear one that says entitled ableist on your forehead

If me wearing the glasses that help me deal with my hearing loss make you uncomfortable I say good. I hope you are uncomfortable

Aligirlbear · 22/08/2026 01:07

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 21/08/2026 22:26

I think if visually impaired people get a lot of benefit from them then good for them. But I still have the right to know when someone near me (how near? No idea) is using them or recording for whatever reason. And I would then move away, sit away from them, turn around, whatever I feel safe doing.

I understand what you are saying but how do you decide what’s ok when out and about - CCTV in the street or public buildings such as the supermarket , the bank, the restaurant that you may not realise is there / ring doorbells which can film you walking past a house etc. how close is ok and how close isn’t ?

Happysnappydays · 22/08/2026 01:12

If someone puts an AirTag in your bag you will get a notification to alert you to this on your iPhone. The light on the glasses would do the same surely. If there are both advantages and disadvantages to these glasses we need to find ways to continue getting the good out of them, without making it easy for those who use them for bad reason. The light seems a reasonable compromise - it doesn't affect the functionality of the glasses for any type of user, just the awareness of others.

You don't have to wear a badge.
You should be expected not to manually change the way the glasses work so people can't see that you are recording when you are in fact recording. How on earth is this helpful to you as a hearing impaired person? Unless you are hearing impaired AND like to creepily record women while hiding that you are doing so. There must be cross over. Otherwise just wear the fucking glasses with the light that tells other people when you are filming them.

There are solutions for those that want to wear the glasses and not be lumped in with the people who wear them for Pervy reasons. If you hoose to avoid the easy workarounds then people will make judgements accordingly. People aren't "uncomfortable" with deafness or disabilities. They are "uncomfortable" with perverts. Happy to wear a sign that says that.

Happysnappydays · 22/08/2026 01:14

I'd prefer the badge on my forehead to say "concerned feminist" if that's ok.

Ooh, or a laser thing on my forehead that targets and damages the lenses of the meta glasses. If those were available (I guess they would need to be proven not to damage people's eyes) I would totally wear those. And I would be more than happy for people to know the reason to. I think they would be very cool.

Happysnappydays · 22/08/2026 01:19

Well I wouldn't want to do that for the reasons explained on this thread, some people are getting a lot of genuine benefit from them

I promise you, I'm using these for captions, not for you. You are not the main character. I can barely hear you, and I definitely don't want to look at you. 🤣

Right, so equally most people don't really care about you and your hearing issues or how you lost your hearing etc. They just want to know you aren't going to be posting them online. Unless you would like someone talking with you while secretly filming then posting it online with the captioning "stupid old deaf man" so other people can talk about how stupid you are and how they hate people like you and post your home address/workplace? This has happened to women/teenage girls and they don't like it surprisingly. It's not actually about you so why make it all about yourself?

HauntedBungalow · 22/08/2026 02:30

Visual impairment my arse. These things aren't a disability aid.

canklesmctacotits · 22/08/2026 03:00

Why can’t these things ONLY be available on prescription, and ideally funded by the NHS, so that visually impaired people who need them can get them for free - and nobody else can?

Oh wait, I think I know why…

Pedallleur · 22/08/2026 05:53

Tcateh · 21/08/2026 22:41

Yeah Barrymore walks around his local town and others wearing them so he's got content for his social media.

A YouTuber I watch uses them for her cycling vlog. But the issue really is Men with these glasses. Certain men just to clarify. But it's another technology being used wrongly.

NervousSheepy · 22/08/2026 06:07

I don't know all that much about these yet, I wonder how schools and workplaces will deal with the potential safeguarding issues. I think they sound a great idea for those with visual impairments, they must make life far easier.

In general, I suppose they are not that different to phones, though perhaps even more absorbing. Will no one be seeing the world without a digital lens in a few years time? If so, I wonder if there will be a further increase in those with speech and language delays or an inability to interact appropriately in social situations.

Tcateh · 22/08/2026 11:36

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 21/08/2026 22:49

One could argue that he is well known, and recognised, and people can move away from him. But I read he goes into his local supermarket too? And those people have no choice really but to interact with him if they’re at work and he asks where the potatoes are.

There is a man on Instagram who used these videos of him moving around his daily life and says ‘well I’m in public places and I’m allowed to’ and I don’t like that at all.

The rights of one group of people shouldn’t be allowed to trample over the rights of another group of people surely?

What about women and children escaping from violence? Then filmed in the park or wearing a logo school jumper or walking round a museum with other children from the school on a trip?

Yeah they can move away but like you say ladies at the tills can't.
It's just getting content on the sly.
It's my local town and it just pisses people off, it's a small town and I was thinking about the glasses and it being pre conceived in his case.
He can film you coming along without you knowing in this manner.
I know it's not illegal.

Tcateh · 22/08/2026 11:41

@Pedallleur

Yes. It's different in some cases isn't it. Barrymore has his cameraman boyfriend with him too who stays up the street a bit to film all his interactions.

I was amused when he moved to the small town. Live and let live. I just think these glasses are an opportunity to be opportunistic.
I'm choosing my words carefully and just highlighting something I've witnessed.

Plus it pisses me off!
