How much to spend on trainers for DD starting year 7

DD is starting secondary school, she has size 7 feet and she wants a pair of nikes that are very expensive for sports What budget would you set considering she's an adult size and any suggestions for trainers please ?

My kid has the Nike star runner, which are about £40. If they're for PE, they will get absolutely wreaked, so I wouldn't pay any more.

How much can you afford? All children are in adult sizes at that age. I would expect to pay between £50-90 probably.

Adult trainers at least £100. My son is a size 8 and his are £120.

DD is starting Year 7 & I think I’m fortunate that atm at least she doesn’t care about brands just comfort! Her school shoes are Nike Brompton Court; her normal trainers are Karrimor & her astroturf trainers (ffs!) are some obscure brand in can’t remember but at least they fit & only cost £27!
Im sure at some point she’ll have more of an opinion but for now it’s what fits she cares more about.

How much is very expensive? I appreciate that will differ for families. I almost exclusively wear Adidas Originals and a pair is £60-£100 for the size you’re talking about.

There is no way my parents were spending the 2007 equivalent of that on me for school sports. Think they were about £15 in George.

At that age they only care about the brand not a particular style. You can get Nikes in Sports Direct for £30-40

I mean that just isn't factually true! I was pretty hardcore into amateur running a few years back, 40+ miles a week, and I never bought a pair of adult running-specific trainers that were more than £60 or £70. I looked what was on sale in my size and bought last year's versions for less than half the price of the latest ones.

Kids doing PE at school don't need carbon plate super shoes, they just need trainers with appropriate grip and cushioning for basic sports activity. Probably more than £10 cheapest Asda trainers, but not hundreds.

Sports Shoes dot com has plenty of decent branded running trainers, size 8, from £30.

Spend what you can afford on trainers that are likely to get nicked out of her PE kit during the first week of term.

What a weird question, how on earth is someone else to advise how much you spend on trainers?

Buy as cheap as you can for school
They will either get lost, knicked or wrecked

nicked on first time taking them to
school. I only bought reasonably good ones as she had started showing an interest in athletics.

I got DD some new balance pe trainers that were £35 on m&m. Her school trainers were £27.

Don’t spend too much. So many PE bags are lost every day at my school . Kids forget them under school desks or on the school bus .

Am I missing something here. Do children have specific trainers for school sports now? (mine are still in primary)

I had just assumed they would wear their normal everyday trainers on PE days.

My year 6 child is currently wearing a pair of Nike trainers. I think they were about £75

I'm a size 5 and sometimes buy from the children's ranges - they often go to 5.5 in sports brands. Agree that you should largely accept that you'll be paying for adult clothes/shoes though by Y7 - I always find it surprising when people somehow expect to still be paying children's clothes prices at 16. Teenagers have always shopped adult ranges.

When I was that age I had some second hand boys' trainers from Clark's. They were old ones of my Mum's friend's son. I thought they were great. They were red so a bit different.

No way would I be buying Nikes for a Year 7 kid.

DD had "pure white trainers with no logo" requested by the school uniform rule. The only ones which somehow were accepted were white adidas ones we got at Deichmann and SportsDirect.

If she loves these Nikes then get them as presents and she can wear them outside school.
And if there are no restrictions for trainers then get a simple pair (you may also need a back up anyway) and see what really is worn after 6 weeks.

I buy all PE shoes from Reebok sale site. There is always usually suitable. Reebok is sufficiently socially acceptable for the DC, but not covetable that they get stolen. Size up though. If no joy, then try M&M Direct.?

They're not. You can get good quality running shoes for far less - look at previous seasons.

Ypu need a pair of good basic multi functional trainers for pe, not high price fashionable styles. Asics, nike, reebok, adidas. Deichmann are good for offers especially if buying for more than one child or two pairs, Decathlon or the brand websites/ outlet stores.

For PE, like others have said, plenty of cheaper bikes to be found that tick the brand box but don’t break the budget. I really wouldn’t get the higher end ones for school PE. Particularly as they then go in a school bag which could be lost or stolen.

I have two in secondary. They wear all black trainers for school, this year they’ve cost £60 odd pound a pair as I had a discount code but it’s usually more like £80-£90.
For PE I spend as little as possible on whatever brand they find acceptable as both have lost PE trainers so ideally £40 max.
For running and the gym I’m happy to spend a bit more.
For out of school trainers they add their own money to what I’m happy to spend.

I would t go expensive, my DDs have roughly £20/30 trainers for school, they get replaced most terms through wear and tear. They have out of school trainers that last longer.

If it’s just for PE, we tended to get the cheapest, or thereabouts, Nike pair at that age. They’ll grow out of them quickly at that age and they often get wrecked with cross country etc. Nike often have sales/offers, so I wait for that and stock up on the next size up. As they’ve got older and took sport more seriously, I have bought more expensive specialist shoes for hockey/netball/cricket. I definitely wouldn’t spend much on a general PE pair.
