Expectations of an 'English breakfast' abroad

Hubbie had an English breakfast in France yesterday and was grumpy that the sausages and bacon weren't what you'd get at home

Would you expect what you'd get at home?

Or allow poetic licence given the frankfurter type sausages are what they see as a sausage

He doesn’t sound well travelled and it’s ignorant to expect an English breakfast when you’re not in, er, England. France has some of the world’s best cuisine. Why bother going there if he just wants English food?

Should a Beijing visitor expect Peking duck in London if that’s what they order?

CoffeeandCakeBreak · 19/08/2026 06:15

I am always baffled by people who travel to different countries and expect English food. Even worse when they grumble it isn't the same as at home. It seems very uncultured.

I actively avoid holidaying in foreign places that are full of local establishments with big signs saying full English breakfast. Usually the sort of places where people wear football tops and stagger around the streets drunk. Not my idea of fun at all, but each to their own.

Because someone on holiday had a cooked breakfast that didn't meet their standards/taste?

You can't have a food-related thread without someone shoehorning in a reference to obesity. It's the law.

What’s wrong w a continental breakfast? Much nicer!! 🥐

In Berlin cafes they used to come in old fashioned 3,tier cake stand tiers - one tier had various breads and often a croissant

one tier had cold meats, salmon and hard boiled or scrambled or fried eggs ( you picked)

1 tier had soft whipped cream cheese and butter and jam

seriously excellent and often quite reasonable - we used to order 1 between 2 with a granola bowl with yogurt on the side - never needed lunch!

I've just been reading about it and looking at pictures and am now tempted to try the full thing, it looks amazing and a good way to start the day.

Couldn’t get past “Hubbie”. Just knew he’d be whinging about the sausages. Bet he complained about the tea as well….

...and the waiters speaking to each other in French.

It does make me chuckle at all the disapproving judgement for someone who chose from a French menu in a French restaurant to have an English breakfast.

This morning I have already picked up a cappuccino on my way to work, for lunch I will probably have some sushi or maybe a ciabatta and I'm going out with a friend this evening and we are planning on having tapas. I'm in good old Engerland - should I be eating these foods? Imagine being in England and eating French / Italian / Turkish / Japanese! Should I just be eating pie and gravy? Should all the tourists who visit our small corner of the earth just eat English food when they get here?

The man was in France and the French menu offered him English breakfast - why the hell shouldn't he have eaten it? If the French didn't want him to eat it, then they wouldn't be selling it! I'm reasonably willing to bet that he will have had access to baguettes, croissants or pain au chocolat here in the UK, so he is likely to have known what he was missing out on!!!!!!

In fairness, there are enormous groups of Chinese people in London’s Chinatown.

I agree, but I think it’s really about what’s described. Whatever it’s described as that’s what it should be.

I think in China they don’t take the bones out of Peking duck, they just smash them with a hammer before they cook it.

We were in Cambodia and my husband ordered bacon and eggs. I had the local stuff (congee with fermented vegetables). Guess who had the better experience? To be fair, our hotel (which was lovely) was trying to cater for Europeans. The chef was so intrigued to see who'd ordered the congee that he brought it to our table himself!

lebin · 19/08/2026 11:28

Definitely wouldn’t expect it in France. I’ve been twice and felt loathed both times, I wouldn’t poke the bear further by trying to order English food 😂

CraftySeal · 19/08/2026 12:40

So difficult to get English sausages and bacon in France (and I presume most EU countries) since Brexit. You have to pay a fortune with import taxes. I'd assume by default the sausages and bacon were a local equivalent rather than actually coming from the UK. Same as on most hotel breakfast buffets around Europe.

As for the usage of "English" in the meal title, If assume it's just a way of referring to the type of breakfast rather than saying the ingredients have actually come from England.

Imisssleep88 · 19/08/2026 15:18

You will never get a good old full English breakfast anywhere other than in England. I haven't even seen one offered in hotels in Europe, only continental. You would be very disappointed in Borneo, we had chicken sausage and beef bacon as no pork allowed, my husband couldn't get along with that version when away. Even in Scotland they will have their take on it with Lorne sausage etc.

Supermumtwo · 19/08/2026 16:59

Totally unreasonable to expect a proper English breakfast in France ..bet he wants a Sunday roast as well ??

Hate that attitude in Brits to be honest… just stay at bloody home man!

LadyAvgeek · 19/08/2026 18:13

Have experienced various interpretations of a full English in cafes/restaurants and hotels. Makes a nice change not to get pale tasteless chicken sausages. Mini frankfurters not bad. Always intrigued by how they cook bacon. Have seen it deep fried then placed on white bread slices to absorb all the fat. That was a 4 star hotel....🤔🫣

Soberinthecity · 19/08/2026 18:27

You lost me at ‘hubbie’.

leave him at home next time.

Theotheron · 19/08/2026 18:30

You’re supposed to take packets of bacon in your suitcase.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 18/08/2026 14:28

Why on earth would anyone order an English breakfast in France?

To be fair I have known French people complaining about the lack of proper croissants in the country they are visiting. It's a theme...

Elbowpatch · 18/08/2026 14:20

Probably best he never has one in an Islamic country then.

Yeah “beef bacon” just doesn’t cut it imho. Although I have been into some lovely pork rooms and perused the grape juice menu 😆

They don’t take the bones out here in the uk either ( unless it’s the breast at a fancy restaurant) but you are right everything is intact in china, head and all

Omg embarrassing
