Expectations of an 'English breakfast' abroad

Hubbie had an English breakfast in France yesterday and was grumpy that the sausages and bacon weren't what you'd get at home

Would you expect what you'd get at home?

Or allow poetic licence given the frankfurter type sausages are what they see as a sausage

Probably best he never has one in an Islamic country then.

lifeisgoodrightnow · Yesterday 14:21

Ask why he didn’t just go to Bognor

SausageRoll2020 · Yesterday 14:21

Seriously, you're in the country with literally the world's best breakfast pastries and your husband is whinging about a full English???

In general a food will be at its best in its home country, eg a croissant in france will be superior to an English one. I'd also expect the type of person who orders a full English when in France not to be the kind of person who is particularly fussy about high quality ingredients.

I want to add "no offense to your husband" but I am kind of judging him here 🫣

I would always expect that the local breakfast would be better.

I’d never order an “English breakfast” abroad.

angelos02 · Yesterday 14:23

Go to Benidorm.

topcat2014 · Yesterday 14:23

Did he spill ketchup on his football top

bitontheobtuse · Yesterday 14:25

He's not in England, what did he expect? He'll be complaining about the fish and chips next.

IdaGlossop · Yesterday 14:25

Not setting foot outside the UK can be a good option.

mindutopia · Yesterday 14:25

I would never order an English breakfast abroad. 😂

When we lived in India, we used to be very amused by what was offered as an English breakfast on some tourist menus. I definitely wouldn’t have eaten it.

That said, I grew up in the States and what is on the menus at ‘American diners’ here is also laughable. Americans definitely don’t eat that!

Lavenderflower · Yesterday 14:26

It’s not realistic to expect an authentic English breakfast abroad.

Totally forgotten the point of the thread but massively craving a decent croissant now 😋

I’ve ordered a cooked “English style” breakfast in lots of countries around the world and Benidorm is the only place I’ve ever got one where I’m sure they’ve shipped the sausages and bacon in.

Outside the UK and Ireland they use what is available to them.

AngelsWithSilverWings · Yesterday 14:28

Why on earth would anyone order an English breakfast in France?

Onmyhighhorse2 · Yesterday 14:28

I cannot imagine going abroad and ordering an English breakfast.

MrsTerryPratchett · Yesterday 14:30

I’ve been to 40+ countries. I think breakfast and pudding are the most foreign feeling food. I think because breakfast is comforting and you’re all vulnerable after sleep. And what people see as a treat is just weird.

Stick with local as much as possible and you get the best food. The French aren’t going to use their mad skills on a full English!

BreakingBroken · Yesterday 14:30

You know sausages vary hugely by region, equally bacon cooking skills.
Food is just too important to me to trust random people to get either of those right.

Naurrr · Yesterday 14:31

Why did hubbie opt for that instead of local food?

hahabahbag · Yesterday 14:32

It varies based on where you are due to both local customs and what foods are available. The oddest concoction was in India - chicken sausages and the beans were made in house by the chef and were treacley apparently according to dh - i opted for Indian breakfast which I would happily have every day, which British hotels didn’t offer it!

a few places eg Benidorm you can get a full English but only because they ingredients are readily available and often the owners are British

mugglewump · Yesterday 14:32

I would consider this grounds for divorce.

Ruthietuthie · Yesterday 14:33

He ordered a Full English in France? I think I am going to cry. Take me next time so I can eat ALL the croissants.

Lamelie · Yesterday 14:33

Don’t let him try andouillette 💩

Dilemma999 · Yesterday 14:33

He doesn’t sound well travelled and it’s ignorant to expect an English breakfast when you’re not in, er, England. France has some of the world’s best cuisine. Why bother going there if he just wants English food?

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · Yesterday 14:34

Hubbie is a bit embarrassing, isn't he?

JehovasFitness · Yesterday 14:35

Silly to expect Lincolnshire sausages but I don’t know why everyone is piling on him ordering that though. I’m sure there is some lovely French food he could have had, but maybe he wanted a fry up?

If I’m a touch hungover abroad in a tourist place I usually go in search of one, I usually find it and I usually enjoy its restorative effects.

Tbf I'm an adventurous eater and even I wouldn't want to eat andouillette 🤣.
