Do you use long voice notes to keep in touch?

Random question! šŸ˜‚ Do any of you regularly use voice notes to keep in touch with friends or family? I mean proper long ones, not just ā€œI’m running lateā€ type messages šŸ˜‚. I’m interested in whether other people have the same thing I do where you and a friend can end up sending each other 10–20 minute voice notes because you don’t have time to actually speak on the phone.
If you do, I’d love to know what you like/dislike about it.

A 20 minute voicenote sounds more like a podcast, and I'd ignore it. There are properly prepared and produced podcasts available already, wich are every interesting :)

If it happened in my friend / family group I think it'd be seen as incredibly self centred, but of course if it works for you and your friends crack on. With consent there's nothing actually wrong with it - it's just a bit odd to me to not be able to make time for an actual chat or conversation. What's so nice about a real life interaction is that the conversation can flow organically, with each party responding and reacting in real time, changing the course of the conversation and making it more fulfiulling/interesting/rewarding/random.

An exchange of long voicenotes would say to me that either you don't value the friendship enough to make time, you are avoiding a real conversation for some reason. Will whatsapp even transcribe a 20 minute voicenote? And how garbled would it be if it does šŸ˜‚

LetticeProtheroe · 18/08/2026 12:52

I delete them un-listened. Why the hell would I want to listen to you waffle on. Send a quick text message. They literally give me the rage 🤣

chedderland · 18/08/2026 12:53

It’s lazy and rambly.

Yes me and my best friend voice note all day long. I absolutely hate talking on the phone its inconvenient and I have too much to say for a text so we VN. No longer than 10 mins each message though

Doesn’t it make natural conversation hard?
Do you keep notes of things in her note that you want to respond to?

Somethinggg · 18/08/2026 12:54

Fuck no. Voice notes annoy the shit out of me, but I couldn't concentrate on and process 30 minutes of someone's uninterrupted monologue if I wanted to. I don't even like podcasts.

GreenFootstool · 18/08/2026 12:55

Absolutely fucking not.

It's incredibly selfish IMO - you wouldn't leave a twenty minute long answerphone message.

I hate voice notes with a passion.

Maddy70 · 18/08/2026 12:56

God now. If I see a long note I listen to the first couple of seconds then get bored

BringBackCatsEyes · 18/08/2026 12:57

I can’t stand them. I put them on high speed to get to the (any) salient points, then reply via WhatsApp.
I also don’t have the patience to watch YouTube instructional videos, I want to READ the instructions.

EmailsaysOOO · 18/08/2026 12:58

My son sends me them now and again. I love receiving them ..don't always reply in that way though. Would probs send a WhatsApp message or - if something wild or wacky was happening - ask if I can call him. ( I'm a dinosaur šŸ¦–)

Interesting so far thanks šŸ˜‚ divided opinions. It
might just be my time of life but as I’m in my 40s I have a lot of friends and family I don’t see often as we live apart and have really busy lives with kids, jobs, gym etc to fit in. A phone call is tricky as we are often not free at the same time and so a voice note means we can both reply at a time that suits us like walking the dog or watering the garden. I just wondered how common it is or not as a means of keeping in touch. I do just send a WhatsApp for general chat.

So what are you physically doing while listening to your friend’s 20 min monologue?

Raspbellies · 18/08/2026 13:12

No. Have never sent one. They take too long to listen to and process.

I barely tolerate the important ones my sister sends. They do my head in. I always think "someone had better be dying to make this 60 second note essential ".

Sent me a brief written WhatsApp. Then I'll care and reply.

Floppyearedlab · 18/08/2026 13:14

I tell people I don’t listen to voice notes-please type it out or ring me.

I tell people I don’t listen to voice notes-please type it out or ring me.

That's fine if that's your preference, but if someone made that request of me then I'd probably forget to do either of those things by the time I had time to do them.

Victorius19 · 18/08/2026 13:16

Dh sends me them all the time but in his defence he's dyslexic and if he tries to type it out, I'm usually sat for 5 minutes trying to understand what he meant! And our DD's have sent them but they're only 30 seconds long type of things.

20 minutes though would make me rage!

TubeScreamer · 18/08/2026 13:20

No

i delete without listening if someone sends me one

dreamingofgoodhair · 18/08/2026 13:29

I’d never listen to a voice note longer than about 10 seconds.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 18/08/2026 13:30

My best mate does this, doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I find it weird that people are so anti voice notes. Just transcribe it if you don’t want to listen

ViciousCurrentBun · 18/08/2026 13:31

No but my MIL and SIL do but they are irritating in a myriad of ways this is just an addition to the list.

Last one was from MIL and 13 mins it’s is very much the ramblings of her bizarre belief systems.

Theweedshavewon · 18/08/2026 12:39

I am a mild mannered person but I really adore the friend who does this but loathe and despise the fact that she does it with a white hot passion and have had to grey rock her out of it over years (ie by just never listening to them but being highly responsive in other ways).

Could you not just say ā€œI don’t like voice notesā€!? I personally like both getting and sending them. But my best friend hates them and told me this … using words. So I don’t send her any. It’s not that hard.

TheChosenTwo · 18/08/2026 13:34

I’ve never had one over about 2.5 minutes and that was from dd!
id listen to a longer one but on double speed, I think they have their place but I usually send them when trying to explain something complicated - and certainly no more than about 30 seconds šŸ˜‚

OriginalSkang · 18/08/2026 13:35

If someone is explaining a specific story/situation that is too long winded to type - fine. 10-20 minutes of rambling about random things is not okay. I have no way of remembering what I'm replying to unless I make notes!

Xiaoxiong · 18/08/2026 13:35

I can't understand how it came to this: we successfully eradicated voicemail, and then for some insane reason decided to bring them back - but this time, pretending it's a wonderful feature and not a universally despised evil.

It's gaslighting, that's what it is.

Have you ever done that? Because its absolutely terrible! And quite funny if someone sends you a sexy one

Who is sending a sexy voicenote??

But yes I use it frequently if eg I want to listen to a voicenote but I'm in a public place and don't have my airpods with me. Generally works fine.
