Do you use long voice notes to keep in touch?

Random question! šŸ˜‚ Do any of you regularly use voice notes to keep in touch with friends or family? I mean proper long ones, not just ā€œI’m running lateā€ type messages šŸ˜‚. I’m interested in whether other people have the same thing I do where you and a friend can end up sending each other 10–20 minute voice notes because you don’t have time to actually speak on the phone.
If you do, I’d love to know what you like/dislike about it.

If I have to listen to someone waffle on for twenty minutes, I want the right to respond as it’s happening. No way I could pay attention to it for more than a minute.

Nobody sends me voice notes and I am very grateful because I do not want to listen to it. Loathe them. It’s never convenient to listen to them.

This! I can’t concentrate for that long and I can’t interrupt! Or say ā€œyes, right, got that nowā€ to shut them up.

Bufftailed · 20/08/2026 10:37

No I really dislike them. I asked a friend to stop sending them. They were 10 mins +

With the transcribe button why not just use that?

Transcribe doesn’t always work. For longer ones (def 8-10 mins)rarely does. Why I asked my friend to stop sending them

That's not what your opening post said - you asked what people liked/ disliked about them - so both sides.

Now you're saying that you only want people to agree with you.

No. I was interested in people who use voice notes and what the good and bad things about using them were.

what I didn’t ask for was judgey comments on how people think they are selfish one sided conversations just about the senders day. That’s now how everyone uses them! I ask my friend questions and tell her a bit about what I’ve been up to, she responds to what I have told her and tells
me about her day, I respond with comments and thoughts on that. It’s entirely possible to be equally balanced just as a conversation can be. Wether the conversation is selfish and one sided is down to the person you are communicating with not the medium you are using.

No. I find voice notes really entitled. I'm happy to send quick texts, sometimes longer ones, but I always read the room, and won't annoy people who don't like long written messages. If I want a proper conversation, we agree on a good time to call.

The trouble with too many people today is that they believe they're important and that everyone wants to hear their every boring thought - I blame Facebook for that.

How the hell do you remember what you want to comment on if it’s 20 mins long? It sounds like you’d need to take meeting notes!

Personally what we do is type a few notes and send it as a WhatsApp so the list of topics stays in the chat. Like:

new gym routine
wedding cake
toms swim lesson
summer meet up dates

no need for judgement or negative comments from
peoole who hate this idea šŸ™„ it’s just how we do it and was curious about what others
do.

I intensely dislike voice notes and think their only legitimate use is by people who can't write for whatever reason.

I dislike the fact that you can't scroll back to check things as with text.

I dislike the fact that listening is far, far more intrusive than reading.

I know you can potentially listen on 1.5 speed, but listening is way slower and more time consuming than reading.

The only people I'd listen to a ten minute voice message from would be my children, but why would they send a ten minute voice message? Perhaps if we were in completely incompatible time zones...

You actually think that the only use for voice notes are for people who can’t write? What a ridiculous comment.

I can’t write an email to my friend when I’m on a 2 hour dog walk. I can’t leave a voice note equivalent of what the email would have said.

and yes I’m aware some people won’t like that. And that’s fine!

I used to until I hated receiving them every day very irritating

SilverandSage · 20/08/2026 10:57

reluctantbrit · 18/08/2026 18:32

But don't you have to listen again when you want to reply? Or do you take notes?

You either have the time to respond immediately and then you can call and talk or your reply can't be that detailed.

I haven't spoken to my lovely PIL for a couple of weeks - various reasons. I got a WhatsApp earlier today, just a "What's going on, we are all well, had a couple of early evening strolls when the heat went down. Aren't you off soon?".

That is easy to respond to - in writing - unless I want to pick up the phone and call.

I don't want a 20 minutes monologue.

We do take basic notes like a list of topics to respond to so that when we do reply we can recall what the other person said. For example I voice note with my cousin a lot and she has just lost her dad sadly and her son is about to have his first child so we talk a lot about those subjects. I’m on holiday so we’ve chatted about that and my
job.

fully appreciate it’s not for everyone. Was more interested in those who do use voice notes and what they do like about it and what they wouod
chnage or improve.

We do with my friend in different country. It can work for some, be incredibly annoying with others

I have two friends where we leave this each other this length of voicenote.

One lives far away and we don't often get to catch up, she instigated them but I really enjoy them so we've continued. We have a flurry of them every few months and we just respond when it's convenient for us as we're both quite busy. I prefer calls to texts and she's the other way round, so it just works for us.

My other friend is autistic and hates phone calls but likes catching up. We switch between voicenotes and texts, depending on how much time or energy we have, but we message frequently. It means she can respond when she has the spoons and, again, it works for us.

I couldn't imagine leaving voicenotes with other friends, nor would I want to, but I enjoy doing it with these friends. Bit morbid but I actually wish my family would leave voicenotes from time to time, just so I can listen to them when they're no longer here.

This is interesting thank you. It’s the having the persons voice that I enjoy as
its like they sent an email but I hear their voice read it. Preserving special voice notes from loved ones is really nice idea.

I don't get many but when my sister sent me one recently I felt I had to be in private to listen to it just in case she said sth confidential. This was not convenient whereas a text I can easily read wherever I am.

Yes this is a good point. I’m the same. Maybe if you could transcribe a summary easily that wasn’t hit and miss you’d know if there was anything in the note you wouldn’t want anyone to over hear.

My heart sinks when I see someone has sent a voice note. I don’t think I’d even listen to a 10 minute VN monologue. If the person is that important you’d find the time to have a telephone call.

That clearly isn’t true in my situation as the people are very important to me and whilst we can both make time for a conversation it isn’t aligned at the same time.

I also hate them. They are self indulgent.

Why do you think I have 8 minutes to listen to you uhm and ahhh / ponder / repeat / pause / think out loud / give me a running commentary of where you are and what you've just randomly noticed, when I am a fast reader and could ingest the relevant information in 10 seconds?

I don't want to hear your voice note any more than I want to hear someone else's scrolling audio.

Have i somehow given half of the internet the idea what I want to voice note them?! šŸ˜‚ because believe me I dont want to speak to some
of you ever again!!

I've never used voice notes. I hate it when people send them. You can't skip / skim and it takes ages to listen to even short ones so they just sit unopened for ages

Headinthecloudsfeetontheground · 20/08/2026 11:18

I’m new here so haven’t previously seen this debate. The answers to the OP’s perfectly reasonable post astound me!

My daughter and I VN regularly; we also WA and call. Some of her VNs are pretty lengthy, but she has a pretty busy life, as do I. I love hearing from her - why wouldn’t I enjoy listening to my DD’s voice when we’re not together?

And I guess this is what has surprised me the most in the ā€˜entitled…. selfish…. shite rambling’ comments on this thread. Surely the people getting in touch with you are, for the most part, people you care about? Why are you so indifferent to hearing from them?

Another word that’s used a lot here about VNs is ā€˜rude’, often by posters who go on to brag about deleting messages without listening to them! That, surely, is the very definition of rudeness?

If you're new to MN then you'll quickly learn that a lot of people here act like interacting with their loved ones is some sort of enormous burden- whether that's listening to a voice note, attending a wedding, or answering the front door.

Thankfully in the world I live in, people are happy to interact with the people they care about.

Balloonhearts · 20/08/2026 11:27

Me and my cousin do. We usually listen to them while we're ironing or in the bath, driving to work or doing the housework.

localnotail · 20/08/2026 11:27

Never use them myself, never listen to them. The only exceptions are:

Phone signal bad/ can't get through or was disconnected halfway through convo and need to say something urgently

Shouting abuse at my ex if he doesn't pick up after being a dick

SunshineOnARainyDay26 · 20/08/2026 11:39

Yes mainly with 1 friend. As she works opposite shifts to me so a call isn't always easy. It's often us just venting to each other. She leaves me one , I listen on way home from work and visa versa. Prob between 5-10 min long.
