Do you use long voice notes to keep in touch?

Random question! šŸ˜‚ Do any of you regularly use voice notes to keep in touch with friends or family? I mean proper long ones, not just ā€œI’m running lateā€ type messages šŸ˜‚. I’m interested in whether other people have the same thing I do where you and a friend can end up sending each other 10–20 minute voice notes because you don’t have time to actually speak on the phone.
If you do, I’d love to know what you like/dislike about it.

@sweetpickle2 I don't mean concise in the sense of actual content - I mean that you don't put all the ums, ahs, and repetitions in a message but are imposed upon you in a voice note.

Looking back at the last transcription of a voice note I received, it is full of "but anyway, what was I saying, yeah um I think I just wanted to ask, um, what train you're thinking to get on Sunday because you know, I don't really want to get there too early but you know what the trains are like, um, I don't think, really, it might, uh, be kind of, you know..."

A message would be:
"what time works for sun? don't want to get there too early but trains not great on weekends! x"

morbidcuriosity · 18/08/2026 13:57

god no. I dont send them at all, ive got 1 friend that does and even a 2 minute one annoys the hell out of me.. just wait till you can type a message...

Snoken · 18/08/2026 13:58

If anyone sent me a 20 minute long VN I would probably just delete it. I like conversations, but not innate monologues about your day. We can catch up on that when we see each other.

I can just about handle a quick one from a friend who is for example driving and wants to tell me she's running late, but even that doesn't make sense, just call me instead.

Xiaoxiong · 18/08/2026 13:58

You can even use the little microphone to dictate a message if you can't type for some reason...

shrunkenhead · 18/08/2026 13:58

There's a time and a place for them but generally I feel they're lazy and say "my time is too important to warrant a long text message and you clearly have nothing better to do than listen to my 20 mins of waffle"!
Also for me to reply and address all issues raised I'd have to make notes! But that might just be me!

Absolutely not! I detest voice notes.

This!

Xiaoxiong · 18/08/2026 14:03

Also since I'm now venting, I'm trying to train my DCs not to message me like this within the space of 10 seconds:
mom
mom
mom are you there
mom pls i have a question
mom

They especially love to do this when they know I am driving, and every time they message me it pings up on Carplay, and the car reads out "mom" in a robotic voice. So it's

Ping! "DC name says: MOM. Would you like to respond?"
Ping! "DC name says: MOM. Would you like to respond?"
Ping! "DC name says: MOM ARE YOU THERE. Would you like to respond?"

Arrghghghhg just CALL ME or ask me the question in ONE message!

shrunkenhead · 18/08/2026 14:03

I think a lot of people use them because they don't like talking on the phone to another person and it seems a bit friendlier than texting. Also harder to ignore than a text as well so people can't play the "oh, I didn't see your message...." excuse!

omghereistrouble · 18/08/2026 14:06

how do you do voice notes please?

mindutopia · 18/08/2026 14:07

Nope šŸ˜‚ I had one friend (well, former SIL though we were friends too) send me like a 10 minute rambling voice note about her relationship with BIL when they split and she sounded high off her face and that just did me in. I’ve not talked to her since! My dd tries sending me voice notes about stuff she wants from the shop and I don’t even listen to them. Put it in a WhatsApp because I can’t be bothered otherwise with that nonsense.

Xiaoxiong · 18/08/2026 14:08

Ooh @shrunkenhead that doesn't stop me. Someone will voicenote me and I'll just ignore it until they message and then I immediately text back. Trying to reward the good behaviour!

@omghereistrouble I'm going to save you from yourself and not tell you! Ignorance is bliss of such horrors.

Denim4ever · 18/08/2026 14:09

Nephew's wife does this as she finds it easier than typing in WhatsApp. Plus we are not a very WhatsAppy family. DH won't do it at all since his side of the family had a squabble (which he refused to get involved in, wisely).

Xiaoxiong · 18/08/2026 14:10

(But because I'm a nice person, it's a microphone in a green circle to the right of the text box in whatsapp. Just use with extreme caution as evidenced by this thread...)

InYourFunnyYellowShoes · 18/08/2026 14:11

My friends and I all use voice notes. We are not always free for a phone call at the same time and we find them more personal than texting.

TheOtterly · 18/08/2026 14:12

Voice notes are horrific

Nobaggage · 18/08/2026 14:14

I keep in touch via picking up the phone and talking.

pinkspeakers · 18/08/2026 14:17

No I'd feel really awkward!

I have one friend who leaves fairly long chatty voice notes occasionally but I'm afraid they do tend to annoy me a bit. She usually sends them suggesting we meet up. So I'd rather she just send a quick text to set that up and then we can chat when we meet!

My daughter exchanges long voice notes with some of her friends so I think of it as a young person thing.

YorksMa · 18/08/2026 14:17

A 20 minute voice note! WTF šŸ˜‚No, if somebody sent me something like that I would not be listening to it.

AtlasCedar · 18/08/2026 14:17

No. I only send them if I need to say something a specific way that can’t come across in text

SpangledCheese · 18/08/2026 14:18

No. I have a relative that does that and I just delete them, if you don’t want to listen to my answer bugger off!

All my friends use them and we are in our 40s so not young. My mum and PIL are in their 70s and use them.

thisismeithinkorisit · 18/08/2026 14:19

no cos I'd never monologue at someone for 20 minutes. ie say 4/5 minutes absolute ma.x.

how are they the one who doesn't want to listen to your answer when you're the one deleting their message?

whatsagoodusername · 18/08/2026 14:22

If I have to listen to someone waffle on for twenty minutes, I want the right to respond as it’s happening. No way I could pay attention to it for more than a minute.

Nobody sends me voice notes and I am very grateful because I do not want to listen to it. Loathe them. It’s never convenient to listen to them.

UniquePinkSwan · 18/08/2026 14:25

I hate them and wouldn’t listen to it if I got sent one. I think it’s very weird.
