Anyone had Air Con fitted during this heatwave? It's going to be the new normal now so considering it as fans do nothing!!!

Really?? Even at 18° you'd freeze!!

The setting is never what your home ends up with in a really hot climate.

They're just telling people to stop setting it to be so low.

The point is they are very worried about the energy consumption used by these things. And not all flats and apartments in those countries have aircon anyway, we have stayed in lots of apartments where they have front and opening widows for flow through and also ceiling fants which are really effective.

I know that, I live in a hot country and find setting the aircon to 24 or even 25 is perfect. 18 would be like someone in the UK setting their heating to 24! The point shouldn't be to cool the whole home to that temperature anyway, just one specific room. Maybe that's their problem that they're trying to aircon the whole house which, yes, you'd probably need to set it at a crazy low temperature if you were using a one room unit to try and cool a whole house.

Well, the more air con, the more carbon, the higher the global temperatures - so no, I'm not considering it.

Edited

We’re a bit past the point where mitigation is the only option, we have to do adaptation as well, which means air con is necessary.

Decarbonising electricity is the mitigation required anyway, not avoiding using things which need electricity.

No. I think it gives out lots of emissions is very expensive and as for the new normal we had 3 crap summer. I didn't even need the fan on last year

A person I know who owns AC installing company said they are working through a backlog of 1300 inquiries and have never seen it this busy.

Good time to train in this industry. Won’t be out of work for years.

its only us that seems to worry about that any other country that’s hot have ac and don’t even give it a thought.

Sadly it emissions hadn’t been vastly increased with the ridiculously high heating temperatures people have in their houses and indeed businesses and shop I perhaps wouldn’t need to consider air conditioning now. I worry greatly about the climate but seeing as too many people are all right Jack about it it becomes a matter of survival for me now as I can’t face another summer feeling this ill.

It increases the energy consumption enormously if you do things like leave doors or windows open when it's running. In homes where I live in SE Asia the norm is to cool only the room you are using (like your bedroom when you're sleeping or office when you're working) and you keep the doors shut so the aircon doesn't leak out. Often at night time the aircon will use barely any power beyond an initial spike to cool the room as once the temperature drops sufficiently outside the room stays cool without any active cooling. But if you had your door open it would keep running all night long. Often in the mornings when I open the windows and doors my bedroom is the same temperature as the outside but the living room and kitchen is noticeably hotter.

It is an internal door in a small apartment that is open, with the AC set to a cool but not freezing temperature. Of course we would not leave external doors and windows open, even if it were just for the insects.

In hotel rooms the AC goes off if external doors (to the balcony for instance) are open.

No point at all having AC to be cool enough to sleep, but be awake because of the noise.

Are you sure you’re thinking of last year and not the year before? 2024 was a relatively cool summer but 2025 was the hottest summer on record in the UK (probably set to be broken by this year).

As for other recent years, 2023 had the warmest mean June temperature ever, a record which was subsequently broken again in 2025 and 2026. 2022 recorded the hottest and 4th hottest days ever.

2024 is looking like the outlier, not the heatwaves.

I would have to set it at 24C, I feel cold when it's about 21C and have my electric blanket on. I'm best went it's about 24-25C in the house but DH always feels hot.

We have an air to air heat pump as mentioned in the Guardian as probably the best option for the environment as it is efficient. We got it a few years ago primarily for heating. It doesn't heat the whole house but it is an efficient top up for part of the house where the central heating wasn't very effective. But it has turned out to be brilliant as an air conditioner. We only use it when it is over 30 degrees and only for a few hours. But we have a very big space with lots of glass and it works amazingly well.

We have it set to 25. So not super cold but enough to feel lovely and cool when it is very hot outside.

StarCourt · 16/08/2026 19:51

I wish I could. I’m in a ground floor flat and the management company won’t let me have proper air con

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/08/2026 21:08

What portable unit did you have

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/08/2026 21:08

I do have a ceiling fan and that really helps

Oreosareawful · 16/08/2026 21:16

We had it installed in the bedroom about a month ago and it’s the best investment.

PurpleVine · 16/08/2026 21:40

got a portable unit for our bedroom. i don't mind the heat during the day but struggle trying to sleep at night. totally worth the money it's made a big difference. not really any louder than having a fan on maximum.

Get a portable unit this winter when the prices drop and have it ready for next summer

I have 2 portable already! They just take up lots of space are so noisy and a pain sticking hoses out the windows with 2 house cats.

limetrees32 · 17/08/2026 17:13

@StarCourt there's a type called a mono block that has two very small vents on the outside rather than a big boxy unit.
Would they consider that ?

Missey85 · 16/08/2026 08:36

Here in Australia it's been made illegal to put a house up for rent or sale without air con 😊 they passed the law because a old lady died of the heat at her house

This is usually the case Someone has to die first.

likelysuspect · 16/08/2026 11:26

Thats not true, travel in the summer to Italy, France and Spain and there are public announcements to reduce the use of them and to not have it too cold, so 18 degrees rathe rthan 15 for example

I have a portable air con, which just about copes with my small bedroom. I’ve experimented with different temperatures and found 18C given me the best sleep. From what I’ve read individuals vary in what’s precisely best for them, but the range is from 17C to 20C.

It’s not the outdoor unit that’s the issue it’s the holes needed in the wall to the outside.

limetrees32 · 17/08/2026 18:33

Ok , that's a shame .💐

DonttouchthatLarry · 17/08/2026 18:34

Ours will be fitted in a couple of months - one unit in our bedroom and one in the lounge. Our house gets ridiculously hot and I actually worry one of my 4 (black, long haired) dogs will suffer from heatstroke, he really can’t cope with the 35 degrees it’s been in our house. At least we’ll all get a good night’s sleep too - our bedrooms are in the roof so no cool brick walls.

Well, as long as The Guardian approves, you're on to a winner! Hope next year you're comfortable.
