Anyone had Air Con fitted during this heatwave? It's going to be the new normal now so considering it as fans do nothing!!!

Not this heatwave no, but I did have AC installed in bedrooms about 15 years ago now.

I was working then and I needed to be fresh and to think and focus at work and I just couldn't do that if I hadn't slept properly. It was only £500 per unit then and obviously I had to wait until winter because they were booked up all summer. Then we had 3 crap summers in a row!

BitterTits · 16/08/2026 00:12

Well, the more air con, the more carbon, the higher the global temperatures - so no, I'm not considering it.

36 degrees was awful this week. Im going to I think

Yes I'm considering it. We got solar last year and have been exporting loads of excess energy, so this would pair nicely!

Itsbeenalongtimeincoming · 16/08/2026 00:18

Yes total God send. You will need it on every room if you want the whole house air conditioned but I would just do your bedroom.

blankcanvas3 · 16/08/2026 00:18

Not in this heatwave, but we have installed aircon previously. It’s been a godsend. I highly recommend it, even just one of the portable units!

I have a mobile air conditioning unit we've had for about 3 summers now. Its enough to cool the upstairs of our small house so is enough for night time amd working at home.

Notbuiltforheat · 16/08/2026 00:29

Mine is being fitted next week. I cannot wait.

Which unit is it? That’s good enough to do the whole upstairs.

DeLonghi Pinguino but, my house is small, 2 bedrooms, bathroom and hall upstairs but, it will start to filter downstairs too on hot days with windows shut but as i say my house is rather small - i would still say its a good air conditioner though!

OrangeFlower14 · 16/08/2026 00:48

@1989STAR thanks might have to get one

hattie43 · 16/08/2026 06:25

Yes I had it installed a month ago and it’s transformational .

thestraycathouse · 16/08/2026 07:13

I am planning it. I sleep / work in my loft conversion and it’s unbearable.

i get the argument that more AC contributes to the problem but I cannot cope with another summer like this one. I don’t / can’t sleep and I cannot work from home.

Summersorcherisjustsummer · 16/08/2026 07:14

Yes I would in a flash but apparently you need to have it two meters away from other properties which means we could only get it in our bathroom

NervousSheepy · 16/08/2026 07:18

No, luckily our old cottage stays a warm, but bearable, temperature, especially with stone floors downstairs. I also don't like the feel of air con as I find it too drying.

its only us that seems to worry about that any other country that’s hot have ac and don’t even give it a thought.

youalright · 16/08/2026 07:25

Yes and its one of the best things we've ever bought

Europe is against it also Germany has very strict rules about it and switzeland doesn't believe in it and so on .
Not sure about Italy and Spain

So basically the countries that don’t need it for more than 3 months of the year are concerned about the carbon footprint but the rest of the world that need it 24/7 are not concerned at all ? I work with people from Hong Kong and when I mentioned about net zero etc and reducing ac use they just looked at me as if I was mad. It’s in every building and it’s constantly on all of the time otherwise the whole city would grind to a halt.

susiedaisy1912 · 16/08/2026 07:47

Found this paragraph from the Global Cooling Pledge that 70 countries have signed up to, so it looks like sto me like they are working on more efficient ac rather than trying to ban it.

“Commit to work together to support increased market penetration of highly efficient air conditioning equipment and innovative technologies and collectively increase the global average efficiency rating of new air conditioning equipment sold by 50% by at the latest 2030 from global 2022 installed baseline;”

I have mine installed less than 2 meters from my neighbour. In fact my bedroom unit is on the inside wall between our homes. She can't hear anything

RocketLollyPolly · 16/08/2026 07:49

The ‘portable’ units work pretty well although unless your house is tiny you’ll need one for each room you want to cool. You need to block the gap in the window as best you can then keep the door shut to be effective. They are also not very portable at all - big and heavy so not something you’ll want to carry up and down stairs regularly. But they cool the bedroom to a manageable temperature and cost a lot less than full installation.

I have not looked into it in depth but I thought it was somerhng to do with the tube or thing on the outside ?

Summersorcherisjustsummer · 16/08/2026 08:06

Also downstairs even a portable unit would be hard as our windows open at the top. Then I had a brain wave....change the window itself ! Get one that opens top and bottom
