Places we have been now retired in the UK any suggestions for somewhere else.

We have always gone to the canaries in November sometimes in April as well.
Now we're retired we like to see places in the UK for a few days between may and September.
When there we like to park up and use local transport trains or buses for excursions so both can see the scenery or not be couped up in a car.
It's just the two of us and are young pensioners who are fit enough for a good walk.
Like a nice restaurant and pubs.

Places we've been over the last 4 years include.
York - love been twice.
Bristol - Dump.
Bath - lovely
Edinburgh - interesting but hilly and cold. (June)
Scarborough - hilly
Llandudno - nice
Carmarthen - interesting
Beaumaris - boring
Newquay - great
St Ives - love
Shrewsbury - friendly
Torquay - ok but run down.

Thinking of Brighton, Plymouth, Falmouth, Penzance, Bournemouth, Cotswolds (where)
Any other suggestions will be much appreciated. Or advice on these places.
Can fit one more long weekend away this year.

OP you hated Bristol and have offended Bristol fans. We all like different places.

Someone suggested Dumfries and Galloway. I went there last year and was absolutely blown away by it. Need a car though.

NearlyNewNonny · 16/08/2026 11:31

HRTFT but I presume you've done the North Yorkshire Moors, Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay, Ravenscar (with its seal colony), etc. when you visited York and Scarborough. If not they're beautiful.

Mooseylooseyloo · 16/08/2026 11:51

What kind of thing do you like, beaches and relaxing or towns where there is stuff to see?

aintnothinbutagstring · 16/08/2026 11:56

I like Salisbury and around Wiltshire... not sure why, find it quite an intriguing part of England. Maybe the history, maybe russian spies.
Cambridge. If you're there, nearby Ely is nice - beautiful cathedral.
A northwest trip would be worthwhile - Manchester/Liverpool/could perhaps do Chester depending on where you stay - the Cheshire countryside nr to Chester is lovely to stay in - Malpas etc.
Conwy.
Dartmoor - I find a bit spooky - I was sure the cottage we stayed when there was haunted. Go when the weather is warmer as it feels quite oppressive in colder months. But lots of history and stories makes it an interesting place.

I didn't mean to offend anyone regarding Bristol it was just my interpretation of the place.
We can all have opinions on towns, villages and cities.
What one person likes does not mean everyone must like.

Again thank you for all the places suggested.
We have decided to try Northumberland at the beginning of September.
Then try others next year now.

Really enjoyed Looe for a weekend - long walks and excellent fish restaurants.

Triflingjelly · 16/08/2026 14:38

Glasgow, Durham, St Andrews

If you’re going to Brighton then add on Lewes too - beautiful little town. Good walks on the South Downs Way too if that’s your sort of thing

DinoLil · 16/08/2026 16:06

Liverpool
Isle of Wight
Brecon Beacons

I was going to suggest Plymouth (& then saw it's already on your list).
We were there for 4 nights in early August (& did the same in Aug 2023). We had a fab time.
The Hoe & Barbican are lovely. We had an evening walk there at sunset each evening.
Easy access to the bus & train station, to lots of destinations (including Looe).
Look at Plymouth Marine Safari for the chance to see dolphins (day or sunset cruise).
The Box - a free museum.
National Marine Aquarium.
Lots of nice restaurants & bars, especially on the seafront.
National Fireworks Competition every August.
Royal William Yard for restaurants and shops.

I'd highly recommend the Crowne Plaza Plymouth. Nice hotel with a lovely pool, a few minutes walk from the Hoe/Barbican & town centre (which has recently been revamped). They have a Marco Pierre White restaurant on the top floor with amazing views over Plymouth Sound. It was the best meal out we've had in years, and very reasonable for the quality.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask or message.

I would skip Brighton (past its heyday) and go straight to Lewes or even Worthing or Eastbourne if you want the coast.

We did Cambridge as a short break and it was lovely. We also like Suffolk (Woodbridge) and Norfolk.

Advocodo · 16/08/2026 20:45

Forgot Ely. Lovely little town with a beautiful cathedral.

Advocodo · 16/08/2026 20:46

Ely is a city, sorry.

If you think Bristols a dump don’t go to Bournemouth

I would head a bit further along to the isle of purbeck. It’s absolutely beautiful. Lots of beautiful walking. You can walk from studland or swanage to Old Harry rock.
I Love Wareham, swanage, studland, Corfe. Especially if you can go out of season when there isn’t the crowds.

Peachy13 · 16/08/2026 21:17

Harrogate, Knaresborough and Ripon. You can do all 3 in a long weekend and if you base yourself in Harrogate you can easily access Ripon by bus (36) and Knaresborough by train. Do the Turkish Baths in Harrogate, see the castle and visit Mother Shipton's Cave in Knaresborough and visit Ripon Cathedral.

Mumbles

Can you speak up a bit?

MissyB1 · 16/08/2026 22:08

For Cotswolds I recommend Cirencester, either stay in the town itself, or stay at the lakes and drive into town. Also go to Nailsworth, Tetbury, and Minchinhamton.

We’ve been to Seahouses a number of times. It’s a lovely area, the beaches are amazing. We’ve done a boat trip from Seahouses harbour. You’re also close to Holy Island. There’s more castles in Northumberland than you could swing a stick at. Have an amazing time.

Hope Valley Line between Sheffield and Manchester.

Grange over Sands and the Barrow line

Agree with everything you've mentioned here. (Also confess I've never really warmed to Bristol despite my attempts to like it. Not entirely sure why - I did always feel like I was waiting at pedestrian crossings a lot)
