We have always gone to the canaries in November sometimes in April as well.
Now we're retired we like to see places in the UK for a few days between may and September.
When there we like to park up and use local transport trains or buses for excursions so both can see the scenery or not be couped up in a car.
It's just the two of us and are young pensioners who are fit enough for a good walk.
Like a nice restaurant and pubs.

Places we've been over the last 4 years include.
York - love been twice.
Bristol - Dump.
Bath - lovely
Edinburgh - interesting but hilly and cold. (June)
Scarborough - hilly
Llandudno - nice
Carmarthen - interesting
Beaumaris - boring
Newquay - great
St Ives - love
Shrewsbury - friendly
Torquay - ok but run down.

Thinking of Brighton, Plymouth, Falmouth, Penzance, Bournemouth, Cotswolds (where)
Any other suggestions will be much appreciated. Or advice on these places.
Can fit one more long weekend away this year.

You've obviously visited the wrong bits of Bristol.
Scottish Highlands and islands.
Chester.
Brighton.

ilovemykindle · 15/08/2026 16:06

Some good places to think about going. Thanks

Love Alnwick and Alnmouth but I love quiet places

Your comments on Bristol made me laugh - I haven't been for about 25 years though.

if you like walking, I would certainly give the Chiltern Hills a try. Again, it depends entirely what you're looking for.

Amble or Warkworth, near Alnwick. Beautiful, lots of pubs, restaurants, beaches and castles.

Glasgow for the sights and the museums - Kelvingrove is excellent. Take a brolly.

Whisky trails in Speyside - including Craigellachie , Dufftown etc. You can often book guided tours/ tastings

Bournemouth is really run down now.

grannycake · 15/08/2026 16:16

Abergavenny. Good train connections to Ludlow or Hereford

FiveGoMadInDorset · 15/08/2026 16:18

If you think Bristols a dump don’t go to Bournemouth

charliehungerford · 15/08/2026 16:18

Whitstable is a good place to visit in Kent, as is Deal.

Hasting Old Town
is lovely.

Rye

Cotswolds - Burford area. Avoid the really tourist sport like Bourton on the water.

Devon - Totnes/Dartington/Ashburton area

would not bother with Plymouth although The Hoe and Barbican are ok.

Cornwall - Fowey is lovely but avoid in high season.

BIWI · 15/08/2026 16:18

If you think Bristol is a dump, don't go to Penzance!

Plymouth is great. Also, Rye, Canterbury, Whitstable, Margate and Folkestone are well worth considering.

tramtracks · 15/08/2026 16:19

Winchester?

Ted27 · 15/08/2026 16:24

Isle of Wight

JustPlainStanfreyPock · 15/08/2026 16:24

Berwick on Tweed is a lovely old town, interesting walks around the Elizabethan ramparts, good cafes and shops.

Kelso in Scottish Borders is also a nice town with lots of independent shops, walks along River Tweed, also bus connections to other Border towns and abbeys like Melrose.

IggyAce · 15/08/2026 16:26

Newcastle is a nice city, but if you stay on the Quayside it’s a walk up the bank to the city centre. You can easily take the metro to the coast.

I love the Northumberland coast, Bamburgh is beautiful, there are local buses but you might find it easier to drive. It’s only a short drive to Alnwick or holy island.

friedaklein · 15/08/2026 16:28

Canterbury. I think the cathedral is just gorgeous

KnickerlessParsons · 15/08/2026 16:28

Bristol isn’t a dump!!!
Cardiff, Winchester, Shrewsbury, Tenby, Exeter, Lincoln, Whitby,

Spidey66 · 15/08/2026 16:30

Try Frome in Somerset especially when the independent market is on (first Sunday of the month March - December.)

bluescarf · 15/08/2026 16:31

Dorset - Weymouth, Wareham - so close to lots of gorgeous places.
Derbyshire - Matlock, Abraham Heights
Isle of Wight - great walks, tourist hop on hop off buses
Pembrokeshire I’d gorgeous but not sure about public transport

Blimey - I just came on here to recommend Berwick upon Tweed and was beaten to it by a whisker.
We discovered the beautiful county of Northumberland fairly late in life and I wish that I'd experienced it earlier.
Berwick upon Tweed is gorgeous, and perfectly placed for popping over the border into Scotland.
The countryside up there is fabulous and the long sandy beaches are amazing.

Edenmum2 · 15/08/2026 16:36

Arundel is a lovely interesting town, very picturesque with good walks. And you can visit lots of bigger places from there (Brighton, Chichester)

ilovemykindle · 15/08/2026 16:50

Just mentioned to DH about Berwick on Tweed think we will investigate.
Not been to that area of the country. Thanks for all the ideas.
Places to look at for next year.
The UK has lots of lovely places that we haven't thought of.
