We have always gone to the canaries in November sometimes in April as well.
Now we're retired we like to see places in the UK for a few days between may and September.
When there we like to park up and use local transport trains or buses for excursions so both can see the scenery or not be couped up in a car.
It's just the two of us and are young pensioners who are fit enough for a good walk.
Like a nice restaurant and pubs.

Places we've been over the last 4 years include.
York - love been twice.
Bristol - Dump.
Bath - lovely
Edinburgh - interesting but hilly and cold. (June)
Scarborough - hilly
Llandudno - nice
Carmarthen - interesting
Beaumaris - boring
Newquay - great
St Ives - love
Shrewsbury - friendly
Torquay - ok but run down.

Thinking of Brighton, Plymouth, Falmouth, Penzance, Bournemouth, Cotswolds (where)
Any other suggestions will be much appreciated. Or advice on these places.
Can fit one more long weekend away this year.

Northumberland is all beautiful, Newcastle is lovely too.

Tenby

Norfolk- horsey gap, Gorleston and the broads.

Bridlington to Whitby worth exploring, stay in Beverley for a night or two on way up.

Aussiegold · 15/08/2026 16:56

Winchester and easy and quick train into Southampton as well!

Headinthecloudsfeetontheground · 15/08/2026 16:56

Cotswolds: Bourton on the Water and Chipping Campden. Probably not much in the way of public transport though…

Tryingnottobeamouse · 15/08/2026 16:57

North Norfolk, staying somewhere between old Hunstanton and blakeney. Absolutely gorgeous! Not completely sure about public transport but I think there must be a bus that goes up and down there. Great walks, great pubs

AllJoyAndNoFun · 15/08/2026 17:02

Bournemouth town centre is a bona fide dump. However…. If you stay in either Poole or Christchurch it’s much nicer. There is some great walking if you go over the sandbanks ferry from Poole and over to Studland or can walk all the way to Hengisbury head from Poole along the beach. Definitely nice for a few days. Some decent restaurants/ pubs that can be incorporated into a walk. Compton Acres gardens worth a wander too.

You have to tell us why you thought Bristol was a dump @ilovemykindle - especially as you've said you like food/pubs. The city has a brilliant food scene.

Peak District clitheroe, whalley etc

Defiantly41 · 15/08/2026 17:10

Forest of Dean/Wye Valley Area of Natural Beauty
Abergavenny/Crickhowell/Brecon/Hay on Wye, the Brecon Beacons & lunch at the Felin Fach pub (has rooms if you wanted to stay)
Oxford
Cheltenham
Cornwall in winter
Agatha Christie’s house in Devon (& gardens)
Burgh Island Hotel (even a day trip with lunch in the Pilchard inn is fun)

Cambridge? Stratford Upon Avon? In the Cotswolds if you like to park up then walk or get public transport Moreton in Marsh could work as it has a train station. By car you're only 10-15 mins to lovely little towns like Stow on the Wold, Chipping Norton and Chipping Camden too.

Shropshire is very under rated.

Stratford if you want a town and history and a nice river

What about walking some coastal paths ? - Pembrokeshire / North Yorkshire / Cornwall, Devon, Dorset Or Offa's Dyke.

Hay on Wye

Silverbirchleaf · 15/08/2026 18:12

Cambridge - very flat, ideal for walking along the backs (River Cam)

Oxford

Chester

Whistable

Rye

Lake District - park up and go for a boat ride, Ravenglass/Eskdale steam railway (and Muncaster castle) and just driving around is beautiful

Portmeirion

Ludlow

Silverbirchleaf · 15/08/2026 18:14

St Andrews

North Berwick

ginasevern · 15/08/2026 18:34

@ilovemykindle Where in Bristol did you stay OP? It's not usually known as a dump or even close. The world and his wife want to move here and the house prices are insane. There are a few "edgy" bits (although not as bad as some other major cities) but as a tourist I doubt you ventured into those parts anyway. If you visit again I'll give you a tour.

columnatedruinsdomino · 15/08/2026 19:47

Southwold (Suffolk) is a lovely place to spend a few days. No transport needed to get around. We’ve visited many times and never get bored.

Bristol is the tops! We’re older than you but love the vibe, plenty of bars and eating places and Clifton and the bridge are a lovely afternoon’s walk.

staaarlink · 15/08/2026 21:10

Stratford upon avon
salisbury
tenby
caernarvon
cardiff
gloucester

mathanxiety · 15/08/2026 21:32

Belfast
Isle of Man
Channel Islands

You'd need to fly or take a ferry, but all are nice places to visit.

Judellie · 15/08/2026 21:33

Harrogate
North Berwick
Cardiff

Ferralraccoon · 15/08/2026 21:33

Northumberland is a must. It’s such a beautiful county. Bamburgh is gorgeous. The beaches are beautiful and there’s so many lovely walks.

Octavia64 · 15/08/2026 21:35

Bath
Newcastle
Cambridge
Stratford upon Avon
Windermere (not so much the town itself but lots of walks and the lake is lovely)

WizzyBizzy · 15/08/2026 21:38

Kelso and Melrose are beautiful.

Would also second Arundel which is off a lot of people’s radar. In same area we have enjoyed Chichester, Emsworth (all same Trainline) and Hayling Island.

And we absolutely loved a trip to Dartmouth a couple of years ago.

TheOtterly · 15/08/2026 21:39

I'm very interested in this because I'm in the same position. Looking for places to visit in the UK for 2 or 3 nights.
Not cities. No further south than Nottingham.
I love Northumberland and the Peak District.
Whether you can get about on public transport is another matter.

HewasH2O · 15/08/2026 21:40

Oxford
Winchester
Cardiff

Any1ForTennis · 15/08/2026 22:37

Berwick Upon Tweed but probably best to use car for exploring as you can 'do' Berwick in a day and there's so much in the surrounding area too.

Melrose or Kelso in Scottish Borders as a base and explore. (Could day trip Kelso from Berwick with 30 mins drive).

Whitby area in North Yorkshire (just don't go near Scarborough, total dump!)

Carlisle

Dumfries

Dumfries and Galloway West coast

Alnwick (my regular go to day trip place)

ilovemykindle · 15/08/2026 23:07

Wow what a lovely variety of places for us to visit.
