We have always gone to the canaries in November sometimes in April as well.
Now we're retired we like to see places in the UK for a few days between may and September.
When there we like to park up and use local transport trains or buses for excursions so both can see the scenery or not be couped up in a car.
It's just the two of us and are young pensioners who are fit enough for a good walk.
Like a nice restaurant and pubs.

Places we've been over the last 4 years include.
York - love been twice.
Bristol - Dump.
Bath - lovely
Edinburgh - interesting but hilly and cold. (June)
Scarborough - hilly
Llandudno - nice
Carmarthen - interesting
Beaumaris - boring
Newquay - great
St Ives - love
Shrewsbury - friendly
Torquay - ok but run down.

Thinking of Brighton, Plymouth, Falmouth, Penzance, Bournemouth, Cotswolds (where)
Any other suggestions will be much appreciated. Or advice on these places.
Can fit one more long weekend away this year.

Liverpool is great for a city visit. It's fairly compact with loads of history and things to see
Durham is also lovely and we combined that with seeing Kynren (Google it as it's hard to explain!) If you go in university holidays you may be able to stay in Durham Castle which is uni accomodation so basic but amazing too.
Hebden Bridge and Staithes in Yorkshire might be possibles

New Forest is gorgeous if you like nature and walking - Brockenhurst, Lyndhurst Beaulieu and Burley are the main villages full of ponies and donkeys and you've also got Lymington nearby which is a very smart coastal town and Highcliffe Castle Beach which is picturesque and sandy if you like that kind of thing. Bournemouth is really not as bad as people are saying - I was there yesterday for dinner. it's mad busy in the summer and has a few dodgier areas but it was full of happy young people out and about enjoying themselves and it made me wonder why it gets so much bad press! Southbourne and Hengistbury Head or Sandbanks/Studland are nicer though and not far away.

Pickering - Grosmont/whitby - steam train and it’s beautiful

mrswolf · 15/08/2026 23:35

North Norfolk you can use the coastal hopper bus. If using a hotel -stay at the White Horse Brancaster Staithe or Titchwell Manor or the Blakeney Hotel.

Northumberland is also wonderful. I’d stay at Warkworth or Bamburgh or you could stay inland at Hexham.

Ribble Valley or Trough of Bowland is lovely for walks and pubs.

Stamford and Burghley House. Cambridge with walks down the backs and visiting the colleges.

Bristol is not a dump.
Gloucester is, don't go there.
I love Barmouth, Tenby, Hay on Wye, Northumberland, Sheringham, Flamborough, Bath, Cambridge, St Davids. But nowhere beats Bristol so maybe don't pay attention to me as we wouldn't like the same things.

Fearsomelycomely · 15/08/2026 23:37

Chichester is a lovely town. The walks around the harbour are beautiful.
Christchurch is very pretty.
Lymington, one of my favourite places. Plenty of pubs, restaurants and walks by the marina.
Lyndhurst, a fab small town set within the New Forest. There are dozens of lovely villages and walks in the New Forest.
Several places in Dorset are worth a visit. Wareham, very pretty small town. Dorchester, Lyme Regis, Bridport, catch the steam train from Corfe Castle to Swanage. Visit Studland Bay, Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door.

North Norfolk, staying somewhere between old Hunstanton and blakeney. Absolutely gorgeous! Not completely sure about public transport but I think there must be a bus that goes up and down there. Great walks, great pubs

Agree about North Norfolk. Blakeney, very pretty, Cley next the Sea, quaint, Wells next the Sea, Holkham and my favourite beach in the world, Brancaster. There is a coastal hopper bus.

Thebaldprimadonna · 15/08/2026 23:43

Hexham is a lovely Northumbrian market town (art deco cinema, good arts centre, lots of places to eat etc and@and you can get the AD122 bus from there to explore Hadrian's Wall. Great base!

We also loved Ambleside in the Lakes.
Paiinswick in the Cotswolds

Ludlow is worth a visit.

Oxford.

I quite like Stafford / Staffordshire /Cannock Chase but you would probably need to use your car at some point. There is a German war cemetery in Cannock chase and there are a few things you can do. Then there is Trentham https://trentham.co.uk/. Nice gardens, bevers and on 30/8/26 Outdoor theatre

It's not ideal for countryside but Birmingham has a quite a lot to do / see. The Jewellery Quarter, Library, good shopping, bus, train and tram links. Cadbury world, Sealife centre, museums and art galleries.

For restaurant, I don't think you can beat Adam's - but you do need to book ahead. www.adamsrestaurant.co.uk/#tab-id-4

You can eat in B:Eats in the symphony hall with free live music.

Cheltenham is lovely to stay, has a really lovely town centre and a secondary artisan high street with excellent transport links for Gloucester and the cotswolds.

hahabahbag · 16/08/2026 11:22

not sure where you went in Bristol, it’s lovely, staying where I am you get the advantage of the marina too and bus into the city. I’d advise east Devon, Kent coast, Buxton, Liverpool, but actually most places are interesting for a couple of nights - I spent 2 nights in Wigan which was surprisingly interesting!

bevelino · 16/08/2026 11:24

Bristol doesn’t come close to being a dump. Where did you go in Bristol OP?
