Sad for his children. What did his wider family think to the narrative being played out by him and Cambridge I wonder? Did they spot any anomalies? Will they have to pay back any of the fraudulently obtained salary?

Autistic people often feel and respond to pain differently from other people. Lucy Bronze, who is also autistic, played the entire Euros in 2025 with a broken leg. To be sure he lied about running marathons with a broken leg, you need more evidence.

Some of his childhood peers claim he was verbal, some claim he was non-verbal. To be sure he lied about that, you need more evidence.

He claimed to have authored the book Being Young, Black and Male: Challenging the Dominant Discourse. It was never published, but does that mean he didn't write it?

Just a few examples to think about.

But we do know he couldnt have appered on 7up
We know that he didnt run 600miles in 6 days
Water aid confirmed they wouldnt have sent unwualified volunteers to fix water pipes
Like he claimed.

Nick Leeson was criminally convicted after trial and imprisoned. Hannah Moore was found guilty of misconduct by regulatory authorities and sanctioned following a lengthy investigation. These cases are clearly different to JA who has not, yet, faced any formal enquiry into the facts. Everyone is purely speculating based on press reports.

And never will be subject to any formal enquiry now as he made the decision to end his life.

You've only got to read a myriad of threads on here about people who have family members like this and the chaos and distress they cause to wider family. Often very difficult to deal with, easier to collude with rather than challenge a lot of the time.

I was really saddened by this news Jason Arday was cleared of plagiarism in his doctoral thesis. I’ve been through the doctoral process and there are checks on your work at every single stage - he would also have been subject to the gruelling Viva process where you need to prove you know your work inside out- Jason Arday’s thesis was additionally further investigated so his work had been rigorously scrutinised. To then have been subjected to the media stating your work was plagiarised must have been soul destroying.
Durham University have noted his kindness and commitment to supporting other doctoral students who must now be heartbroken by this news.

Do you feel qualified then to comment on the experiences of racially minoritised people in the classroom, as students or teachers? If this is not your field, probably not. It’s pretty normal academic courtesy to say ‘not my field’, and not at all like refusing to name a teapot.

QED

Arday’s work was replete with large chunks of other people’s texts, purported interview subjects that swapped race and sex, sometimes within the same work, basic spelling and punctuation errors including in his thesis title (seemingly because he pasted from another work).

He was held up as the best in the world at what he did.

I can evaluate it, yes. It’s a teapot.

You can’t evaluate it because of “academic courtesy”.

It’s not courtesy to be unable to spot obviously shoddy work of that degree. It’s artificially-induced stupidity created by social norms of academia.

I'm not sure we will ever get to the bottom of what the truth is now. I think there's a high probability his family will bring a wrongful death lawsuit against Cambridge who will settle out of court. They may also include some portions of the media but considering how that worked out for Harry, Elton etc. recently just Cambridge would be a safer bet.

Cambridge will probably conduct an investigation in which they accept some responsibility around their hiring mechanisms and due diligence procedures but it's unlikely we'll get full clarity about his early life claims of significant disability and achievements.

He claimed to have had brain surgery on a brain tumour a few weeks before his viva, which left him unable to even remember his work and when he read his own thesis it was like reading it for the first time.

He then said he managed to get through his viva despite this setback.

I guess his family will have to live with the legacy that in certain quarters he is a figure of ridicule. I will be citing him and making sure my BTEC students know his face and fate in September’s induction when we cover plagiarism.

If the family have been living off the proceeds of crime -fraud is a crime - then of course they should have to repay and the wife herself may need to face criminal charges -but no way will the police will dare to investigate of course.

Why?

He's been proven to have lied about many, many things and when confronted by at least one journalist said 'I just thought I'd be believed'.

If you want to say well he was demonstrably a liar but that doesn't mean he lied about everything then sure, maybe he didn't?

But I wonder why in a sea of lies you're trying to claim that?

What's the point?

He then said he managed to get through his viva despite this setback.

And that was his second brain tumour according to him.

Yeah, lots of people have said he was kind.

Doesn't mean he wasn't a fantasist and it doesn't mean his work wasn't appropriately scrutinised.

On line you can see quote by quote how obvious his plagiarism was.

Which he didn't explicitly deny BTW, he claimed it was a result of his alleged Autism meaning he 'mimicked' and 'repeated' others work.

‘No one could have predicted expected this’, well yes, anyone who is a minority and isolated and has been bullied left right and centre, as well as being publicly humiliated, yes, this is how far such people are pushed. Yes, this was sadly foreseen in professional black circles. And yes, all those other people on threads accusing him and belating his work should be ashamed, like lynch mobs. How many of us with phds know people who have not written their own phds, quite a few I would wager.

This post is not really helpful to black professionals and academics who want to be perceived as having won their positions on merit.

It confirms the suspicions of those who think the story is much bigger than one man, and that there is something very rotten within UK academia.

The tragedy is that a vulnerable man didn't have his fantasies challenged by those whose job is to seek the truth. Academics and journalists swallowed incredible stories without any investigation because it suited their ideology, and enabled him to build a life on lies, that would crumble at the lightest touch of reality.

For me, this is the story that will stop me reading the DM. The relentless bullying, a story no one really was that interested in. The Mail really has blood on its hands.

Many were interested in it, since it revealed how a formerly revered institution like Cambridge had been so enslaved by ‘wokery’ that they failed to employ due diligence and promoted a man way beyond his capabilities, because he seemed a perfect ‘poster boy’ for their DEI policies.
The remarks made to him on his appointment by Hilary Cremin, head of the faculty of education, are positively cringe making.

It isn't but I will be very surprised if later down the line, his family don't take legal action. A collective civil claim against the media and Cambridge. There will be some legal teams already circling like sharks.

Wrongful death lawsuit. What on earth are you talking about?

You have no evidence that it’s one example of many (and indeed many ‘what’? Areas of academic enquiry you’re passing judgement on without, I’d guess, knowing anything about them or having read any of the relevant literature?) The Warren Buffet anecdote seems to be a secondhand report of one student’s recollection. I don’t thinks it’s UK HE that’s lacking rigorous enquiry here 😆

You know that acronym RTFT - if you read to the bottom, you will see that I am quoting The Spectator magazine; I am not for one moment claiming this as my own.
I guess you have a degree and are feeling sensitive about it, but in the words of Elsa....let it go.

@Switchnow

You don’t have to be an expert in a field to be able to spot something howlingly wrong.

Interviewing a maximum of 15 people about their experiences (even aside from also borrowing other people’s studies and mixing them up), mixing it with your own pre existing views and life experience on race and using that as some kind of grand thesis to be applied generally is really thin academia - it’s the stuff of GCSE coursework. Would any of these studies (even if correctly done) have really advanced anyone’s actual thinking? Provided evidence beyond something a campaign group could have pulled together in a few weeks?

It’s hard to believe how hard some academics work for so little pay on things that really lead to advancements in human thinking or scientific discovery. This really isn’t that.

He claimed his leg was twice its normal size when running the marathons while it was broken yet photographic evidence shows him completing his marathons with two perfectly normal legs.

There is video evidence of him claiming to have a masters in psychodynamic practices from Birkbeck and Birkbeck say they have no record of him as a student.

He has definitely told lies.

Strange character with the lies. But not the worst crimes in the world.
