Eclipse- is it safe to watch through your phone on selfie mode?

Does anyone know if it's safe for your eyes to turn your back to the sun and put your phone in selfie mode to watch the eclipse?
I left it too late to buy glasses.

Given that BBC Weatherman Paul Hudson was recommending using a smartphone on selfie mode on Look North on Monday, I'm assuming they're in damage limitation mode at the Beeb.

If you read the thread you will find that I have offered plenty, including pointing people in the direction of the BBC website, which explains the whole thing.

Its fine as long as you're having a quick look with your back to the sun in selfie mode. Using it continuously might damage your phone. I hadnt though about an old phone, going to charge one up now

I'll wait to see it on the telly later instead 🤷.

I must admit all this kerfuffle is putting me off bothering with it really, I might just pop out and take in the atmosphere but given I can't look at it, I'm starting to wonder what this eclipse fever is all about (I mean I can look at it if I could find anywhere selling glasses, which I can't, or through a cereal box....)

I must admit when I first heard about the “pinhole camera” I thought that was exactly what you had to do 🫣

However I also know how dangerous the eclipse light can be so luckily Googled straight away and learned exactly what they meant!

I didn't have anything further to add, it had pretty much been convered and I was reading and learning. Shaming people for asking a follow up question is just silly. You don't know who is on the other side of the question. Not everybody is knowledgeable.

I tried and failed to get some special glasses. Amazon was happy to take my order on Monday for delivery on Thursday.
It does seem a bit miserable to have to use a cornflakes box or a colander. I think I'll just watch it on TV.

There's no fever, social media is doing it's usual of dividing people over it. It is a big event though, we won't see another in the UK like this until the 2080's. There's enough going on in the world, people are allowed to look forward to something that brings alot of people together.

Bbc and NASA said it could damage your phone. Not that it absolutely 100% will. A brief selfie could damage it but could be fine too
