Is this enough food for a barbecue?

I’m having a barbecue for 24 people on Saturday. I haven’t hosted for this many before so can I check with those if you who are more experienced whether this is the right amount of food?

On the barbecue:

24 burgers
24 hot dogs

Prepared in advance and served cold:

50 buns
A large gammon joint
15 barbecue chicken drumsticks
15 plain drumsticks
A potato salad with lemon and garlic
Homemade coleslaw
A Caesar salad
Another type of vegan salad

Then for people arriving I’ll have a cheeseboard, crisps, dips, and sweets out.

Is it enough? Should I add a pasta salad?

But from the BBQ, you're offering one burger and one hot dog sausage each. Most people won't eat tinned hot dog sausages, so that leaves them with a solitary burger. People generally expect to eat barbequed food at a barbeque, and it is that you are lacking in. Yes, they can fill up on other stuff if they're still hungry, but it seems odd to invite people to a BBQ and severely restrict the actual barbequed food. Your attitude comes across a bit like you can't be bothered barbequing, so I'm confused as to why you've invited people to a barbeque. It sounds like a drinks and snacks party would be more up your street. Then you could have just put out a few bowls of crisps and peanuts and been done with it. Minimal effort, minimal cost.

I think your guests will be disappointed, but I'm sure they'll be gracious about it.

Most people do eat hot dogs 🙄.

I know plenty of people who eat normal sausages, but literally not a single adult that would eat a tinned dog sausage, barbequed or otherwise. I think 'most people' is a stretch. Do you honestly, really believe a tinned hot dog sausage is a delicious treat that people want to eat at a party? Would you invite people round for a dinner party and serve them tinned hot dogs?

I appreciate people are different, but it's extremely unlikely your guests will eat tinned hot dog sausages for choice (and you yourself don't like them/won't eat them).

I think we need to accept that they know their guests better than we do. It wouldn't be something I'd eat or serve but the OP has repeatedly said her friends do eat them.

Yes people eat hot dogs from jars, packets and <gasp> tins 😀

Maybe you should have said Frankfurters make them a bit more acceptable 😋

Sounds plenty to me. No wonder we have an obesity problem in this country - the comments saying it's not enough baffle me. If me and my husband do a BBQ for us a burger and a sausage is enough meat for us.

You should write to all the shops and let them know that they should discontinue this very popular product because you don’t know anyone who buys them.

I guess OP knows her guests better than you do ! And I don’t think you have an invite.

ovals · 12/08/2026 10:53

I’ve done a similar survey to you @dontmalbeconme but with all my friends, colleagues, family and acquaintances rather than yours. 78% would eat a hotdog.

Chewbecca · 12/08/2026 10:53

I really like your suggestion of 16 butchers sausages + 16 hot dog sausages & would be very interested if you report back and let us know both the order they were taken in and leftover count. A proper scientific experiment please. Don't drink too much until the data is in, we don't want any messed up numbers.

Look, you do you. It's no skin off my nose if the food at a party that I'm not going to isn't very nice. I'm confused why you posted on a forum requesting opinions, though, when your only response has been to agressively snap at people that you're right and they are wrong.

What you are suggesting wouldn't go down well with my friends and it would be a bit embarrassing for the host. But if you're so sure your friends will devour their tinned hot dog and be happy with just a single burger and a hot dog from the BBQ, then crack on with it.

I will be alcohol free until the results of the experiment are in. I’ll have both ready at the same time so that the results are properly controlled.

I don’t remember asking anyone’s opinion of the food. Just the quantities. Clearly, though, I have overestimated many people’s reading abilities. Including yours.

Could do a questionnaire too. On a scale of one to ten how hard have you judged me for the hotdogs?

Breadcat24 · 12/08/2026 12:17

@ovals Weirdly while I do not do hotdogs at a BBQ (normal sausages) I think hotdogs are perfect for bonfire night!
What this says about me goodness knows

Permanentlytired2621 · 12/08/2026 12:27

I’d say not enough personally

ThisAgileScroller · 12/08/2026 13:08

I think get some extras and cook them fresh when needed . Always space for another burger when youre smelling them on the bbq

I’m just worried I’m going to end up with loads left that I won’t eat.

As I mentioned further up but think it got missed-get some takeaway boxes. People will always be happy to take leftovers home, either for themselves or their pets. There is nothing worse than running out or people leaving hungry. Also BBQs are different to other meals, people will eat, stop and then eat again. I would much rather have some left than not enough. Also people are unpredictable, on the day they may all fancy a hot dog, or chicken.

You can always send people home with leftovers op. Never object to being sent home with a Tupperware of things to pick at!

Yes, I am rude to the absolute sad bastards who have so little going on in their lives that they feel passionately about barbecues to which they’re not invited.

And yet you have so little going on that you are asking questions of the ‘sad little bastards’. Piss off OP. Get off MN with your fake posts and your shit attitude

How can you arsed to feel so strongly about someone who’s made a thread about a barbecue? It is absolutely tragic.

She didn’t know they were sad bastards until she’d asked the question. People are fuming that she hasn’t immediately capitulated to what others think she should serve.

Well, I’ve got a barbecue going on, you see? That is why I am posting. Most replies are sensible and sane people, but there is always a few for whom Mumsnet is quite literally their life, and they get themselves very upset and angry about mundane threads.
