Is this enough food for a barbecue?

I’m having a barbecue for 24 people on Saturday. I haven’t hosted for this many before so can I check with those if you who are more experienced whether this is the right amount of food?

On the barbecue:

24 burgers
24 hot dogs

Prepared in advance and served cold:

50 buns
A large gammon joint
15 barbecue chicken drumsticks
15 plain drumsticks
A potato salad with lemon and garlic
Homemade coleslaw
A Caesar salad
Another type of vegan salad

Then for people arriving I’ll have a cheeseboard, crisps, dips, and sweets out.

Is it enough? Should I add a pasta salad?

I honestly don’t believe that BBQ’d hot dog sausages are even in the top 500 consumed foods in our country, but I’d be really interested to see the evidence to the contrary!

This is hilarious. What evidence do you think there would be?!

Theresip · 11/08/2026 13:11

Do you think? When I do smaller barbecues this doesn’t tend to happen. I bought eight burgers and eight hot dogs for a barbecue of five last weekend and there were three burgers and four hot dogs left over. I would hate to run out of food but I don’t want to be throwing loads away.

I would not want to eat more than a burger and a sausage. + all sides it’s plenty. People just tend to over eat at bbqs.

Theresip · 11/08/2026 21:53

MrsWalker2025 · 11/08/2026 21:20

I don’t think it is enough. And I would find going to a BBQ and having cold gammon and chicken quite weird.

Surely cold cuts in the garden in August is normal? It is around here anyway. Cold drumsticks are buffet staples.

Why have you even asked the question? Majority of people have told you they personally don’t think it is enough, and you have passive aggressively shut them down. Just serve what you want and don’t ask!!!! Simple!

It was the same on her previous thread about this upcoming bbq. OP was a lot ruder to posters there, though.

DrCoconut · 12/08/2026 01:17

Make sure you protect your vegan guest's food as others will scarf the veggie burgers and cross contamination the salad given half a chance.

Yes, I am rude to the absolute sad bastards who have so little going on in their lives that they feel passionately about barbecues to which they’re not invited.

I'd do a bit more healthy stuff personally. Things like corn on the cob, sweet potato, veggie kebabs, a fillet of salmon, prawns etc; all cooked on the bbq.

People are generally moving more towards this kind of food and away from sausage and burgers.

Lol give over

Brokentoes85 · 12/08/2026 01:35

So one burger and 1 hot dog each? No not enough

Brokentoes85 · 12/08/2026 01:40

Theresip · 11/08/2026 14:45

80 hot dogs and burgers would be a total waste though. 16 people aren’t going to eat two burgers and two sausages.

So why did you ask? People are telling you it's not enough and you're just saying you don't want it to go to waste and seem to think that because one person might want 2 burgers, that will magically mean someone else will want 2 hotdogs and no burger.

One burger, one hot dog, one or two drumsticks, gammon slices or pulled pork, potato salad,
coleslaw, cheese, scones, sweets, crisps and dips, charcuterie, caprese salad, green salad. Is this really not enough for your appetite?

It’s plenty of food, but I’d be inclined to get ads more sausages, burgers, chicken, and leave out the gammon.

It will probably depend on how many men will be there as to how much meat will be eaten going by my own family bbqs (all complete savages). I find that having something that can be cooked in advance and heated up quickly helps if you get stuck. I usually have a batch of sausage rolls, mozzerella sticks and pizza bites just in case. Or I just do a big curry and freeze it into portions if it doesn't get used.

gokusgirl · 12/08/2026 08:07

If you’re serving gammon and other meats that require a knife and fork, can they sit down. It’s really hard to cut meat standing up.
just for my two pennies, I would have a burger and salad. My husband no salad at all and would easily eat a couple of burgers, he doesn’t like hotdogs and he wouldn’t eat any of the salad. So listing all the food out and saying isn’t this enough is pointless as people won’t like all of it. I hate chicken on the bone and trying to eat it standing up is a pain.

Theresip · 11/08/2026 21:17

I love it.

So do I. The fat is the best part!

My Mum does a honey and mustard glaze on gammon, too, and it's knock-out.

ovals · 12/08/2026 08:14

OP was asking if the quantity was enough as she knows what her guests eat. Some said no (some called her cheap and suggested she swap burgers for a dressed salmon but OP ignored that) so she has upped the quantity of the food she’s providing (again, that she knows her guests will eat).

My nan can only eat soup OP. What are you feeding her?

I'm with your husband, I hardly ever go to barbecues so I will eat as much of the barbecued meats as I can manage get away with and ignore most of the sides.

But from the BBQ, you're offering one burger and one hot dog sausage each. Most people won't eat tinned hot dog sausages, so that leaves them with a solitary burger. People generally expect to eat barbequed food at a barbeque, and it is that you are lacking in. Yes, they can fill up on other stuff if they're still hungry, but it seems odd to invite people to a BBQ and severely restrict the actual barbequed food. Your attitude comes across a bit like you can't be bothered barbequing, so I'm confused as to why you've invited people to a barbeque. It sounds like a drinks and snacks party would be more up your street. Then you could have just put out a few bowls of crisps and peanuts and been done with it. Minimal effort, minimal cost.

I think your guests will be disappointed, but I'm sure they'll be gracious about it.

Half a bowl usually, but make loads and freeze the rest just in case.

backformoreofthesame · 12/08/2026 09:58

A solitary burger ?

because you don’t want the sausage or all the other stuff as well becuase only an idiot expects massive amounts of BBQd stuff when there is a big crowd

in a normal meal o would only have a solitary burger ( in the bun, with some salad ) and I don’t expect to stuff myself silly at someone else’s expense
